The capture bolt for the PTO shaft is a pita to work with once you get that big plastic shiels installed. Getting a ratchet and socket and a boxed end wrench in there is a battle.

If you need 3” off the PTO, wouldn’t you need to take 3” off BOTH ends of the shaft? In this case, cutting off 1.5” from each half of the shaft nets you a grand total of 1.5” in total length removed.

Don't blame Country Line for the PTO being too long people,,, but their instructions should be clear. They have no idea what tractor it will be on so they make sure it's long enough. Put the tiller onto the tractor. Pull the PTO shaft apart and take both plastic shields off. Attach one end to the tiller, the other end to the tractor with tractor off. Hold them side by side and see if one will slide into the other an additional 3 inches. Mark both ends with a black marker. Take equal amounts off both ends. Before cutting make sure tiller in fully raised and lowered position that shafts are not about to pull apart or bottom out pushing and damaging the tractor PTO shaft. Either situation is terrible. If all looks good then cut with with cutoff saw. If cut the right length you should be able connect PTO to tractor after attaching tiller. One end should slide well into the other but not bottom out damaging tractor PTO regardless of tiller position. Once you have the right length then cut plastic shields equal amounts and reinstall. Do NOT run without plastic shields. Clothes, long hair, rope can wrap up in a shaft and kill you for sure. You can use a hole saw or spade drill to drill 2 holes, 180* apart in the big plastic shield to install bolt and tighten nut with 2 sockets the easy way. Many MFG's have the holes there for the bolt or to grease the U joint. Great video. Thanks.

ALSO: if you are operating it in your garden space and your tractor has a low axle like my little Mahindra. Put it in 3rd or 2nd gear in low axle and take your time. Your garden dirt will look like new every time you use it.

How did you get the PTO on the tiller? Was a real pain to do. The plastic protection hood is nothing but in the way. The window is not big enough to work a ratchet to get it bolted on.

What is the PTO Horse Power of your tractor? That part of the recommendations at Tractor Supply has been contradictory. I want to purchase the 5', the same one you have but my tractor, a Kubota L3200 series puts out just over 25 PTO Horsepower. Not sure if I will be cutting it to close since they recommend 25-50 Horse.

My tractor is a Mahindra XL26 with 4 wheel drive. In 4WD it will pull about 38 horses. If you have a low axle setting I highly recommend using it. You go slower but the results are better for your garden and your tractor.

Mine is 26 hp you shouldn't have a problem... keep the gear ration low(see above comment) and vary the depth with your lift. Believe it or not it's the very top layer you are trying to bust up and make smooth... Try that and see if it helps.

@@BBLandServices thanks for your reply. ok, I think i may try one of these things. the rated hp is up to 40hp i think. I was worried that 65 may damage the gear box. I also found on line that the specs for the 5030 is up and down the scale, like 60 - 65 hp. and one tested hp at 62 hp. thanks again for taking the time and replying..

@@xazoola6000 oh if the gear box is rated at 40hp that is a problem. Would look for one with a high gear box rating.
