How very sad. I well remember her but can't recall reading her book. I was born in the war and had a great interest in the Royal Family. It was all so mysterious in those days, a total enigma. I remember Queen Mary too. The likelihood of the public ever hearing about the likes of Megan Markle or Harry leaving the country, just could never have been imagined. There was huge respect for them. At the end of each film at night we'd all have to stand for the national anthem. Television was the thing that opened the secret door. The Queen's family barbecue was another mistake, eating into the mystique of royalty. It had to happen. The 1960s changed everything! Probably the best time of my generation's life. Poor Crawfie, undeserving of that treatment. The late Queen was quite ruthless in her treatment of Diana. Her titles and security went. Had she had her royal security she may very well have been alive and we wouldn't have that ghastly poseur lording it over everyone. The rightful Queen was and is Diana just as the rightful wife of Henry VIII was Catherine of Aragon. He, who made the monarch the head of the Church of England. Ironic indeed.

A different POV from these comments: Crawfie sat at their table, ate their food, was intimately close to their children, and included in family conversations -- and then one day she kicked down the front wall of their house and invited the world inside. IMO - Considering some of the unpleasant insider information that has come out over the last 40 years concerning the royal family (including the Queen's grandson turning on his own relatives) it seems very cruel to treat the governess like this.
