Great information. Working on getting more sleep and better sleep is always on my mind. I have found that I get a better sleep when I keep the temperature between 60-64F in my bedroom. How significant is sleeping temperature?

Lowering the ambient temperature is a helpful way to cue the onset of sleep (consistent with our evolutionary development of circadian rhythms with the onset of darkness/night). Some folks suggest room temperatures between 60-70F (which is a pretty large window!). Some of the variability in this recommendation is due to the differences in bedding/garment selection, which will reduce/increase tolerance to lower temperatures. There has been evidence that warmer temperatures, or conditions where temperature increases, can lead to 'awakenings' in studies (i.e. - disrupted sleep quality), and that lower temperatures increased sleep duration.

Almost all our biological, physiological, and behavioral functions follow the 24hr circadian rhythm and work together to maintain sleep and wake cycle. For example, body temperature is the highest in the middle of the day, falls down to the lowest at bedtime. So to fall asleep at night, our body temperature should stay low. As was previously mentioned, high body temperature can disrupt falling asleep and remaining asleep during the night.
