It’s a charming little town but has no view of the famous Matterhorn. If you stay in Saas-Fee, make time for a day in Zermatt that is not far to see the famous mountain, it’s worth it, but make sure it’s a clear day. Saas-Fee, being à care free town like Zermatt offers the advantage to have the main parking at walking distance from the town, unlike Zermatt where a 20 min train ride is necessary from parking to town.

Wir haben es hier mit einem Potjomkin'schen Dorf (Vorspiegelung falscher Tatsachen) zu tun. Entweder man baut etwas wieder so auf wie es war, oder man lässt die Finger davon. Halbherzigkeit ist hier fehl am Platze. Dann wäre es besser, ehrlicher und billiger gewesen, nach Abriss von Technischem Rathaus und auch der monströsen Kunsthalle Schirn das gesamte Areal zu begrünen und nur die merowingisch-karolingisch-ottonische Kaiserpfalz vor dem Dom - in erster Linie die Aula Regia - zu rekonstruieren, um dem Betrachter vor Augen zu führen, wie Frankfurt an dieser Stelle zur Zeit seiner Ersterwähnung (794) aussah. Was hat man aber gemacht: Direkt an die "Goldene Waage" ein Stadthaus geklatscht, dass es dort zuvor nie gegeben hat, um nur ein Beispiel zu nennen. Im Altstadt-Modell der Gebrüder Treuner (Historisches Museum) wurde jedes Haus bis ins letzte Detail genau rekonstruiert. Man kann niemandem erzählen, dass es nicht möglich gewesen wäre, von diesen Modellen im Computer 3D-Animationen zu erstellen und danach die Häuser eins zu eins wiederaufzubauen. Der Wiederaufbau der so genannten Ostzeile geht in Ordnung, um den Römerberg architektonisch abzuschließen. Trotzdem ziehe ich den Hut vor den Handwerkern, die Großartiges geleistet haben, das Gesamtkonzept jedoch ist total verfehlt. Hier waren keine Architekten, sondern Chaotekten am Werk. Von ursprünglich 2.000 Häusern, die hier noch vor dem 22. März 1944 standen, gerade einmal 15 zu rekonstruieren und die Baulücken mit 20 Phantasiebauten auszufüllen, ist ein äußerst schwaches Ergebnis. Erwin Hoheisel, Eppstein
