Dementia Researcher
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2018
Every 3 minutes someone develops dementia, and it is now the leading cause of death in the UK. And yet, 5 times fewer researchers in dementia compared to cancer. To tackle this challenge head on, we need to support emerging talent. That’s where you come in.
Being an early career researcher can be rewarding and challenging. It is as much about new discoveries and ideas as it is about the pressure to publish and competition for funding. So University College London and the National Institute for Health & Care Research got together with Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's Research UK, Alzheimer's Society and Race Against Dementia to create a website to inspire and support early career dementia researchers.
On our TH-cam channel we share our video podcasts, narrated blogs, webinar records and regular do live streams to share science and careers advice from across all areas of discovery, from basic science to clinical and care research.

Dr Yvonne Couch is an Alzheimer's Research UK Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Oxford. Yvonne studies the role of extracellular vesicles and their role in changing the function of the vasculature after stroke, aiming to discover why the prevalence of dementia after stroke is three times higher than the average. It is her passion for problem solving and love of science that drives her, in advancing our knowledge of disease. Yvonne writes about her work, academic life, and careers as she takes a new road into independent research @dr_yvonne_couch

hi
I have known Peter for nearly 50 years. He truly is a wonderful human being and I'm lucky to call my friend.
What more support do you think is needed? Could these communities help you? What other communities have you found that we didn't mention?
I’ve always found the lack of interest in this disease surprising. It’s an utterly fascinating dive into the human condition.
We are your energy for this moment, you got this!
Thank you for your support and strength ❤
How can we encourage more open discussions about rare health conditions?
I am so delighted to have found this page, very supportive and informative. My first symptoms of MND/ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) occurred in 2011 but were diagnosed in 2013. I had severe symptoms ranging from shortness of breath, balance problems, couldn't walk without a walker or a power chair, difficulty swallowing, and fatigue. I was given medications that helped, but only for a short period of time. In 2020 while doing research about ALS I found MADIBA HERBAL CENTER with so many great reviews, with no doubt i immediately ordered the formulas.I wasn’t sure if it was a permanent cure but the result I received from my neurologist has shown that all my symptoms have been fully eliminated. I am back to my store, since the 2020 pandemic after using the herbs my ALS recovery story has changed many people's lives who thought there was no true cure for MND. If you or someone you know have ALS or any MND disease and would like to see results like mine, contact the WWW. MADIBAHERBALCENTER .COM
What a great performer. Well done 👏🏼

Have you switched from Academia to Industry? What are your thoughts on the differences?
My husband first experienced confusion and loss of memory in May of 2012 while undergoing rehab for alcoholism. Being home seemed to help him until 2017 when he gradually began experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms. He had four to five hours a day where he wanted to get a "greyhound" to "go home." Also, he thinks I am his sister and believes he has rented a car (he hasn't driven in 5 years). His personal hygiene was in the tank, it was necessary for him to change two to three times a day. Without long-term insurance for his care, it was becoming stressful to care for him. This year our family friend "Ken" introduced and started him on BRONGEE HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS for Alzheimers and Dementia, 2 months into treatment he improved dramatically. At the end of the full treatment course, the disease is totally gone. No case of Alzheimer’s, hallucination, forgetfulness, and others, he’s strong again and able to go about daily activities. Contact Dr. Rohan today via whatsapp +393510553632 As this may also help you or your loved one get rid of dementia

Great digging down to the nitty gritty of documentation and engaging in caring and how these may compete or support each other Dr Fonseca de Pavaia! Great presentation!
Very few things on the Internet and social media have any value, but this does👏🏻👍🏻

Brilliant points and presentation Dr. Lantham!!! You've summed up the reality of the systems involved so well!

And what about the new treatment in animal models using pseudo prions?
This show was a pretty long time ago
Why is it in America, that African Americans and Hispanics have higher rates of Alzheimer's compared to non-Hispanic whites and is there a cheapish genetic test that can be done at home that can classify people as African Americans or non-Hispanic whites, to help people understand their risk?
Alzheimer's disease disproportionately affects African Americans and Hispanics in the USA compared to White populations for a variety of interconnected reasons (but there is still much uncertinity). These factors include both genetic and environmental influences, as well as disparities in healthcare access. Genetic Factors: Certain genetic variations may increase the risk of Alzheimer's, and some of these variations occur more frequently in African American and Hispanic populations. However, genetics alone doesn't fully explain the disparity. while genetic factors like the APOE ε4 allele and other emerging gene variations do contribute to the higher incidence of Alzheimer's in African American and Hispanic populations, the interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental or socio-economic factors seems to play a crucial role in shaping the risk for Alzheimer's among these groups. More research is needed to explore these complex genetic-environmental interactions. Cardiovascular Health: African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to suffer from conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, which are linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's. These conditions contribute to vascular dementia as well as increasing Alzheimer's risk. Socioeconomic Status and Access to Healthcare: These populations often experience barriers to high-quality healthcare, including fewer screenings for dementia, delayed diagnoses, and less access to specialised treatment. Socioeconomic disadvantages such as lower income, education, and healthcare access exacerbate these challenges, resulting in a greater likelihood of untreated or late-stage Alzheimer's. Health Disparities: Chronic stress, often linked to systemic racism, social inequalities, and economic hardship, can also lead to poorer overall health and heightened vulnerability to Alzheimer's. Stress affects cognitive health and is a risk factor for conditions like hypertension, which contribute to Alzheimer's risk. Awareness and Cultural Differences: There may be lower awareness about Alzheimer's disease in some African American and Hispanic communities. Cultural stigma surrounding dementia may also delay diagnosis and treatment, worsening outcomes. Research Gaps: Historically, minorities have been underrepresented in Alzheimer’s research, meaning that findings and treatment approaches may not fully reflect the specific needs or risks of these populations. These combined genetic, environmental, and societal factors contribute to why African Americans and Hispanics in the USA are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s disease compared to Whites. Addressing these disparities requires targeted research, better healthcare access, and culturally competent outreach. But as ever more research is needed to know for sure! e.g. We also know that Alzheimer's is higher in women too... Blood tests for Alzheimer's are now becoming a reality, and genetic tests for APOE are available, but they only show that this gene is present, and you can have the gene without developing AD.
@@DementiaResearcher Thanks for the detailed and informative reply. Rather surprisingly, Hispanics: The life expectancy for Hispanics in the United States is 77.7 years. Non-Hispanic whites: The life expectancy for non-Hispanic whites in the United States is 76.4 years. My personal belief is that over-medication in the USA is worsening life-expectancy for white people , who have more access to doctors. But I can't really claim this is a peer-reviewed finding :-)
wow, you’re doing some wild work there. good luck!!
