STOP WAITING and Take Action - The Builder Ethos
If you do 10ft high wall construction and a gable roof, you'll have plenty of space for any possible rack AND you could hang the rings from the ceiling and have plenty of space to do a full dead hang all the way to a muscle up, as well. You only need about 12ft of total headroom for the average 6' to 6'3 person to have enough space for that. 12ft high walls and a gable roof might even allow you to go from a full dead-hang to a full handstand on rings.
How do you keep the shed temp tolerable during the seasons?
Great question! Before I had electric installed I ran an extension cord for a window AC in the summer and had a propane buddy heater in the winter. I just did a DIY mini split install (under $1000) and it's awesome! I have a video coming to the channel showing the process hopefully later this week.
I love my shred because I feel like I’m out of the house and I don’t have to compete with cars or tools for space. It’s great for the minimalist!
Exactly! I love that it's a "separate/dedicated" space just for working out. What size shed do you have?
December Discipline for the win!!
A little guidance, and a little discipline go a long way!
I can't get the Zues Gym Builder program to work, any advice?
It can definitely be glitchy sometimes.
question how necessary is a roof cap vent and how do you stop wasps and yellow jackets from living lavishly, in my area it's why people refuse to install gutter guards as well
Most roof building codes require venting at the bottom (soffit) and top (ridge) or fans. If vents are installed correctly, insects shouldn't be able to get through the vents. (Small holes or screens) Whether you have open attics or insulated rafters, roofs need airflow underneath to prevent moisture issues.
Hi I currently am using my garage. I have been looking into a shed in our backyard. I don't have a lot of equipment but find myself looking at adding more things. Our yard is stupidly sloped and I don't know how big of a shed I can put in our yard. I have a folding squat rack, a folding bench, an elliptical machine, and dumbells. What size would you recommend?
Great question! I think you could fit that equipment comfortably in a 12x16.
Agreed. I live next to a Planet Fitness, but poured thousands into my basement gym. It's not about money; it's about convenience, privacy, customization.
Awesome! So many good reasons.
Interesting designs and something to dream about. But one thing seemed inconvenient to me in all designs, was placement of weight plates. I think that in all cases more space saving and convenient at the same time would be to store weight plates symmetrical on both sides of the rack. Exactly half of plates on the right side and half of plates on left side, wall mounted or mounted on the rack. It would make loading and unloading barbell so much easier and faster. It would be one or two feet from storage to barbell not across the room. Weight trees away from the rack might be more convenient in public gyms, when plates are shared across several power racks.
Great point! That works especially well with wall mounted plate storage. 🙂 That said, there are a variety of movements away from the rack that one would use plates for like deadlifts and land mine movements, so having the plates close but not right next to the rack still works. 🙂
I am wondering if you have done the calculations or estimates for the foundation and maybe a slab for the amount of weight that will be moved. For example, I have an old shed now, its a 14X20, it has mats and wood platform, even so I was able to crack the concrete below it when doing my lifts. Granted, im a 300lb guy dropping couple pounds from shoulder height (with Bumpers), or some heavy deadlifts (steel plates) from knee height.
What a beast! I haven't done exact calculations, as there are a lot of factors, but when you start dropping big weights rather than setting them down, the calculations for the energy transfer is exponential. If you're dropping a few hundred pounds in the same spot routinely as part of your lifts, it maybe be wise to invest in pads or a spring-based lifting platform which is designed to slow and disperse that energy transfer from weights in freefall.
What about a vapor barrier on top of the joists but underneath the subfloor? Would that be wise?
A vapor barrier isnt a terrible idea but I'd avoid putting it up against the subfloor. There's a greater chance of it trapping moisture up against the subfloor that way. If anything, a vapor barrier under the blocks with a bit of stone on top will prevent a lot of moisture transfer from the dirt, allow for drainage for any moisture that gets on top of the plastic, and allow for airflow under the framing.
I am doing a 12 by 19 but I have a functional trainer and an actual all in one home gym that is going to take up quite a bit of space. I was hoping you were going to show a dumbell rack in your 12 x 20 space. I think with those 3 pieces the outside walls will be pretty full and won’t be room for anything else. One side with have the double doors which you can’t block.
Hey James! Great question. What functional trainer are you going with. You could possibly put the all in one and the functional trainer on each end wall, and the free weights along the back wall. I'll make a short looking at that setup if you're interested!
@@BackyardSHREDS I have the Hoist V6 and V4. I thought about getting rid of all in one gym for some different pieces but I hate selling stuff and for only an hour to an hour and a half a day just not sure it is worth it. What you are saying is exactly what I was thinking. That pretty much will take up the whole room with those 3 things. Wish I had just a little more room but the cost has me limited.
This was great! One question though. How do you make it level. I'm installing on a concrete slab that is sloping.
Great question. You can do one of two things: 1. Level the ground by digging or building up with dirt & stone. 2. Level the 4x6 beams by using longer 4x4 posts on the low end. (This is the advantage of using the posts compared to setting the beams directly on the ground or on blocks. It's much better for leveling.)
I definitely could go for the 12 x 20 !
That's what I have! What would you put in it?
@@BackyardSHREDS my squat rack, universal cable system, dumbbells, all kinds of accessories, and maybe even an infrared sauna 😄
Ok. Do you talk about the vendors and specific shed models you recommend in any video?
Great question! I'm currently working on an upcoming video about buying versus building, and plan to talk about some different buying options/considerations. 🙂
A solid foundation is key!
Not gonna fall through this floor! 😁
0:14 is the most watched part in this house. Even this stay at home mom of four kids understood everything.
Gotta throw in a little goofy for the kids. 😂
Roofs dont have studs. Roofs have trusses or rafters. Always learn the lingo of your trade.
@@jeff-w good catch! I said the wrong thing and didn't realize it until editing but couldn't re-record it. (Thus the subtitles)
Honestly, if it's your own home, you might as well keep those up there for late night stargazing and stogies
I live in the valley in southern ca, summers reach up to 109 and winters drop to about 40 degrees. Would you recommend this product for my tuff shed? Im insulating next week. Thanks in advance.
Definitely recommend. Good luck on the insulation project! You're going to enjoy having it insulated -its a relatively simple upgrade that makes a huge difference! Post some photos on social media and tag @backyardSHREDS so we can check it out!!
They make great seats for a date night under the stars too!
Pretty dang comfortable. Not gonna lie
Could you be any better looking? I really like you, and I'm proud of YOU!
Thanks for always supporting me!
That list is a life saver!
Saves so much time!
I know somebody who would've appreciated such a list when he was building his home gym shed...
Exactly!
Super useful for more humid and cooler climates.
Sure is! And insulation in general is so easy but so helpful
Let's go
I was stoked when I saw this. 😁
Glad to still have a husband!!
sheesh - for real!
I'm guilty of going for cheap first and then ending up having to buy the nice stuff later. Sometimes it works to go less expensive, but when you're going to be using it for years, go for quality.
Great point! Cheap definitely gets the job done for lots of things ... But sometimes it ends up costing more.
Good
Like Jocko. 😁
Won't that plastic insert be cooler, and thus allow condensation to form on it's underside? Just as the underside of the roof would?
Great question! I can't speak from experience on that, but since it's an inorganic surface, it's probably going to be a lot more resistant to mold and dry out better than the porous roof sheathing.
Cotton candy... 😮
Not my favorite flavor. 😆
I love Micro-Star International!
Marketing Science Institute? Lol
Macro Shed Intelligence
I really appreciate this😊
Happy to help!!
😂 wait till you find out that’s not needed… make the roof a little higher( like a inch) and it does the same… you must live in California
You're right -if you live somewhere where it's warm all the time, probably not needed. But in cold environments, it's pretty important!
@@BackyardSHREDS I live where it’s 100+ in the summer and -15+ in the winter.. and I’ve never seen them used on sheds… most sheds aren’t insulated
@@tylerwestman5258 well yes. If you aren't insulating the shed... then this whole video is irrelevant 😁
Don’t waste your time or your money on this product
What do you recommend?
lol thats what i was thinking. what a waste
I call them baffles but no they aren’t a waste, you can use whirlybirds to exhaust air from the attic but you still need to bring in fresh air which is why we use these baffles to pull air in from the soffit. You gave no info and said nothing useful. Typical commenter.
gives the squirrels a nice place to store their nuts
Backyard SHREDS wildlife refuge. 😉
This really is good fundamentals to understand when you have a heated dwelling in a colder climate. Water is the death of most buildings over time. We think of flooding or roof leaks, but condensation is like your mom's high cholesterol, builds problems slowly over time before something gives. Btw, tell your mom i said hi
Great point!
How much you want to bet he just wants to show off that he's got a home gym
Shamelessly mate. 😁 That's what the channel is about! 💪🏼
@BackyardSHREDS you're not European either so why use " mate" I bet you say "bloody" too
I'd pay $44 for the whole stack, but never put that much out on one. Sorry but I'm old and very tight with my wad.
Things have definitely gotten expensive!
I’ll tell you why these are the best home gym mats literally the packaging says multipurpose and the sticker says gym and stall mat
Right? The TSC ones are definitely designed for barns, while these are designed for residential.
Lol there's also a computer manufacturer called MSI. They make gaming computers and parts.
Ha. Probably not the same company... But who knows? If Yamaha can make both pianos and motorcycles... 😅
Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is quit common in construction today. Most residential construction roofing in the last 20 plus years are sheeted with OSB.
I used 5/8 OSB on this roof when I built it last year.
The problem with that roof is that its made of press board. Junkiest roof ever
What kind of materials do you prefer to build roofs with? OSB is standard where I'm at. 7/16 is common. 5/8 for added strength.
@@BackyardSHREDS personally I'd rather have plywood, pressboard susceptible to damage and not compatible with drilling
Main reason for the clip is for universal air gap during installation. Roof sheeting shall have an air gap to enable expansion and contraction. Without the minimum gap the roof would become a checkerboard. Do the clips add strength, I wouldn't disagree with that, however always remember everything under the sun expands, thus contracts. Your welcome Grasshopper 😊
Absolutely! The clips definitely are designed for expansion spacing. My goal here is to highlight the added strength. You can accomplish the 1/8" expansion spacing without clips.
this is actually obvious when the bords are Infront of you. this isn't needed.
True. Sometimes you can make cuts from the scraps. It's especially helpful for optimizing cuts on sheeting, or for expensive linear pieces where it's costly to buy extra.
A shed!? Years ago a man would say oh well now its a major problem grow a pair
Yep! Home office & home gym shed - I just moved in 2 weeks ago - check out the other videos if you want to see more of it. 🙂
Wow thank God you are ok
Thank you! I came down 4 feet behind my head!
The natural look is really chique.
This takes "natural light" to a whole new level
Been debating a shed gym for a while now.... Glad you decided to start this chamnel, and glad I found it! Looking forward to watching it geow, and learning along the way!
That's awesome! What size shed are you thinking? What info would you like to see covered on the channel?
That’s was great Cody! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks Bruno!
