Episode 245: Becky Gandillon, Co-author of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World
Disney just keeps making changes to their line-skipping services, and it's hard to keep up with everything. It's the perfect time to talk with Becky Gandillon, who studies all the updates and how they will impact your Walt Disney World trips. She is also now the co-author of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2025, which was published in August.
Becky is my guest on this episode of the Tomorrow Society Podcast to talk about all the latest from Disney. She's back to dive into the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass services, which replaced Disney Genie Plus. We dive into the new and expensive Lightning Lane Premier Pass. It gives you more flexibility with your Lightning Lanes but for a much higher cost. Becky also describes the best ways to get the most out of the Disney Dining Plan.

      The "new" set of Dr. Who started out great, but quickly climbed up its own ass and died there. Fortunately, there are several Doctors to choose from, going back to before color TV. My favorites are: Jon Pertwee: Played the Doctor from 1970-1974 Tom Baker: Played the Doctor from 1974-1981. I think this is most folk''s fav. Of the new ones, the first, (Christopher Eccleston: Played the Doctor in 2005) was the only new fella I likes. David Tennant was good to start, but quickly goot pretty goofy as well.

      I think you can get into it if you start at the beginning of a Doctor's run. The new season is a good way to go if you have Disney Plus, and all the other recent seasons are on Max. Starting with season 1 of the reboot in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston is also a good move too.

    While I think a family coaster should’ve been the next new coaster, this coaster will be flashy and smooth and will provide the park with another 48” height requirement coaster along with Nopuko (which is getting brand-new track segments for 2025 to replace those incredibly rough parts). This ride will stand out amongst the other Raptors as it will have GREAT themeing. With this, Matugani, and a smooth Nopuko, Lost Island will have a STACKED top three.

      That makes sense. I hadn't heard that Nopuko was getting new track; that's great news since those rough spots are just brutal. I loved Matugani, so no arguments there at all. Such an amazing little park. My heart breaks for them. However, probably not the best idea to open a $100 million park in nowheresville and try to compete with a major park in the same region that has a complete foothold on the only moderately sized town in the area. The way you could link to star tours would be pretty simple: create a 'inner-starport-transit' that is nothing more than a large multi-segment bus with 2-wide ride rows which can provide enough capacity while allowing for enough distance from the outer wall to install screens that use simple 3D presentation (they already have their glasses). The 10 minute 'ride' could be a fun, immersive relaxing reprieve from the heat (and a change to sit and relax) while you're moved backstage to the new location where you ride the actual star tours - and disembark on batu. This could be a very nice people eater. You could even make the transit additional storytelling, even a music number or some comedic realtime 3D performer systems.

    • @tomorrowsociety
      @tomorrowsociety 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like the idea of having a separate attraction that serves the purpose of being entertaining but also is a way to connect Star Tours to Batuu. It's a little bit like the Hogwarts Express at Universal Orlando, though this wouldn't be between parks like that one. Instead, it's just another way to have a Star Wars attraction and connect guests more with both Star Tours and Galaxy's Edge. It would be amazing.

      @@tomorrowsociety precisely - and I'm not sure why it hasn't been explored (other than for obvious cost and logistical reasons). Florida suffers from that high water table but also, the complexity and constraint of backstage area being repurposed. I've always seen these as opportunities to layer operations access in backstage areas where you can start building up to add more utility but that's no small feat. I would think they could also re-purpose the existing star tours area for something else but yeah - interesting podcast! • @jsardone
    @jsardone 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've always thought there were lost immersion opportunities with transport attractions (but I mean, using the 'moving of people' to deepen the immersion). Before they announced and built Galaxy's edge, i used to design airport terminals that were star wars themed (including ride systems) that would 'land' you in a fully cannon environment - and then started to think about other ways to 'move people' by connecting them to other stories and locals. This was a missed opportunity with Galactic Star-cruiser where a truly incredible transit experience and 'lunch bay' could have really solidified your buy-in to the experience once you arrive. I know budgets are a thing but there are many inexpensive ways you can pull these things off. All in all, Disney needs to get more comfortable with risk taking as a element of their culture again where now, they're just going for moonshots which as we've seen, don't seem to be paying off as they should be.

    • @tomorrowsociety
      @tomorrowsociety 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great points. I would have loved to see a transport attraction at Galaxy's Edge, which would have added much-needed energy to the land and allowed for different views beyond just ground level. • @jsardone
      @jsardone 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomorrowsociety The layering of experiences is also a big miss - you have all these facets of the land that feel devoid of life - unless they have plans for them why even bother? I would have rather had a Ewok village with tree-top villas (another project of mine) bridge the two places together but then it would break 'immersion'. Story is essential but these places need to design in more flexibility. I'm surprised that was not part of the plan from the start.

      @@jsardone Right. It's a large land with a lot of structures and areas, but in many of them, not much is really happening. I've found that as I think about it more, "immersion" isn't as important to me as just having a vibrant land that's an inviting space. Galaxy's Edge is an example where they're trying to stick to a timeline and look, but it keeps them too limited in a lot of ways.

      I was thinking the same thing! They could probably keep the building this time, but there's a lot they can do there. Knotts Berry Farm did a similar thing with their Ghost Town rides too.

    Home, Sweet Home. Visually, however, it’s just not the same without the pop of color from the purple-based bedspreads. Luckily, I was able to get my hands on one of them. It’s still my #1 choice when it come to resorts on WDW property.

    • @tomorrowsociety

      That's too bad that they don't still have the purple bedspreads. I looked up some pictures, and they added a lot!

    Lmao I’ve never seen this and I’ve been on smuggler’s run (Orlando) tons and tons of times. Only ever went single rider, even with family, and we can just walk on it’s hilarious

    • @tomorrowsociety
      @tomorrowsociety 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Single rider is definitely the way to go, though I think it's worth it to do the standby queue once (when the wait time is low) just to se Hondo and the whole experience.

    Such a serene pair of resorts. I’ve stayed at deluxe, value and moderate resorts - but Port Orleans French Quarter has continued to remain my favorite - my “home.” If it were part of DVC (or had a senior living component) my family woulda bought in YEARS ago. Don’t bring TOO much attention to Port Orleans, part of its appeal is its near anonymity. It’s like the bathrooms at Imagination - if EVERYone knows about it, it’s gets too much traffic and is no longer as special. (I know, I’m selfish).

    • @tomorrowsociety
      @tomorrowsociety 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ha! Sorry about that Neil! I’ll try not to rave too much about Port Orleans in the future. It has such a different vibe from basically all the other WDW resorts. I hope to get to stay there again sometime soon.

    A $30 million RMC and it's just a Fire In The Hole replica? Not impressed, to put it mildly. I don't think there's any debate for what coaster takes the title of "worst RMC" now. This better be part of a package with a T-Rex.

    • @tomorrowsociety
      @tomorrowsociety 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd look at this as a separate type of ride from other RMC coasters. I know it's a coaster, but it's going to be more of a dark ride than a typical coaster. Given the amount that Herschend is investing, my hope is that it's a lot more than just recreating Fire in the Hole. They're also spending to update the entire area around it, so that can add up quickly too. I'm optimistic at this point, but we'll see how it goes!

    Some great points Dan and insights which we need to keep reminding ourselves about. First boarded Horizons in 1989 and, on multiple visits from the UK since then - next is this year - Horizons is the only extinct attraction that truly hits to the gut. I do miss the immersive magic, see my son's face at age 5 on that first trip. Great job Dan.
