Thank you, Jan for these lessons. These are wonderfully subtle and advanced concepts and actions that would benefit an intermediate student moving into more advanced work. I especially appreciated #3 onwards, how to get in. I was also intrigued by one way of entry, the triangle, which I found, interestingly enough, in one Daito-Ryu teacher. In any case, I wonder if you could now do a series on how these insights have helped you to do your aikido. It would also be interesting if you could tell us who gave you these insights, whether these are from Tissier or Inaba-San or whether they are your own developments. Personally, I would love for you to discuss Friday's book on Kashima because it is not always clear, even for advanced aikidoka, which parts of their system are important keys to understanding. You have explained one entry point essentially and I am very grateful for that (including the circular leg cut and removal, both of which I see as variations of the triangle). It would be nice to be made aware of other entry points, if possible, or any other 'essential' teachings from Kashima. Thanks once again for a very clear and beautiful exposition of Kashima sword work.

Interesting lecture on 'angles' in aikido. I recall spending a few years on the same exploration. Most of it is useful and helpful for intermediate level thinkers. Of course, there are problems with large, heavy, tall, and resistant ukes. We also have to remind ourselves that A) often the resistance we encounter is not 'conscious' or 'ill-intentioned' by uke. Uke is simply being themselves, strong and heavy. B) It is up to us to blend or do aikido with them with the same sense of loving intent and harmonious reconciliation. I am glad Johan has brought attention to important points about angles. Personally, I think there's more we can learn about irimi-nage and kokyu-nage than what is demonstrated here. While the principle of drawing uke into our centerline is valid most of the time, this becomes difficult with a heavier and larger person. The last part of irimi-nage, as demonstrated here, can be a weak point just at the moment uke stands up and leans into you, whether your knee is there or not. Kokyu-nage also, as demonstrated here, will also be heavy if uke is large and tall, and if he won't stand straight and allow his arm to drop. He just needs to take half a step or walk away. The discussion of angles is important and useful and this video will help many people overcome their fear of approaching large uke but there are subtler points we can continue to learn. We should keep our minds open, I think, for the development of subtle skills. But such a discussion must be conducted at a higher level, among people who already appreciate the sticking points, the difficulties, involved in our art. The ideal, in my view, is to find a method (or methods) which works with all people the same way. My own approach is through analysis and synthesis of movements of the subtlest sensei. And to find movements which do not contradict the aikido philosophy of loving intent and peaceful reconciliation. A harmony between technique and philosophy is ideal but the developmental curve in aikido, while intensely personal, leads us in all sorts of creative ways. I think this is a wonderful characteristic of the art, where instructors have freedom to explore many dimensions. My own quest is one of seeking the subtle, the subtler, and the subtlest understanding. The good thing is there are sensei out there who continue to develop and demonstrate such subtlety. We need to keep learning and teaching ourselves, I think. Once again, thank you for your video.
