Crystal Ridge (Diff) Solo GoPro
after a day of getting 2 lead routes with my mate james on the crag at Stob Coire Sputan Dearg on Ben Macdui, getting Amethyst Pillar and Grey Slab done. still had to go and get my bag at the bottom of the crag so added a wee solo up crystal ridge in what soon became rain and hail conditions.

Pov of the route the Hybrid with my mate Martyn. did it in 5 pitches leading pitches 1,3 and 5. first pitch isn't included, just Icey back to the proper stuff. conditions were far from ideal with a lot of wet snow, vertglass and iced up cracks making good protection hard to find, so ran out some section, especially the last. Think we went a little off route at the end, being just right of the c...

Spectacular footage. Never seen winter crossing before and I'm looking for the hand holds. Kudos for sticking to the ridge
Looks more like scrambling.
5:15 on wet rock is hardly something you'd do without gear in a flash...
Gnarly in the rain, sick climb be safe man
This brings back some terrifying memories from a long time ago , andI did it with 3 other very experienced climbers, the very thought of doing it solo in winter gives me the shakes even now 40 years later😱
Nice
Awesome
Great video! what camera set up are you using pls ?
GoPro max on a 120cm selfie stick which is sticking out my pack
That’s wild
Bulge around 30 was spiiiiiicy with the foot popping!
The go pro boes nothing to show the route.
They will do studies in university based on the size of this man’s balls in the future
Wow I’m so out of breath after all that exertion
I led the same climb over 25 years ago. Fantastic to see this movie. Love the heavy breathing, authentic. It was at my winter limit.
i bet Alex Honnold would free climb this in about half the time.
A lot of people would. Doesn't make it any less impressive
@@liamtaylor74 no. Only Alex Honnold. Because Alex Honnold.

Did you see the part where he's ice climbing?
How's you're ego? Good? The Himalaya don't need or want you. Hope you brought all your trash down the mountain.
Connie look great
I hope this guy doesn't have a family.
One mistake and it's all over.😫
Is it more unstable the more holes it has?
I guess eventually it could be, but it goes through melt and refreeze cycles, so that helps fill in or thicken the ice. So as long as you don’t try and climb it in a turbo thaw should be pretty bomber
You had me breathing heavy over that bulge and I'm only in an armchair in my livingroom! Good sport.
Respect👍
On ye go mate 😤😤
This is one of those sports where all the best are dead.
Ice is quite stable.
@@stephenburnage7687 Is it really? Is there a thickness you have to have before ice climbing?
Surely the best are those alive to tell their tale of success
Not true at all.
@peteredwards5298 sure about that? Sure some haven't died yet but many of the best have sadly passed on. I'm basing this on absolutely zero knowledge on the topic if that matters.
Fair play fella, that was good going! It's on the to do list some day in the next few seasons. With ropes!
Extraordinary!
49:45 did somebody piss on the summit?
Ye most likely, not many spots on route where it’s be easy/ comfortable to do so
@@Jonathan.L.C.Wilson Thanks for the answer! Was really curious about it while being flabbergasted by your climbing!
nice shit man
awesome.
Top man - I can only dream of ascents like that and every credit. Amazing climbing!
Great going in hit and miss conditions. I like your use of the side foot. I need to try that. Slainte
Thanks, feel like the neve was decent overall, was the less steep bits that were a bit annoying trying to get the axes to hook on anything. Ye don’t think it was textbook technique, but was mostly on the less steep bits where I didn’t need to front point, coz my calf’s were already burning haha
Holy shit indeed! I was with you until 30:00 that ice section and a few squeaky bum moments when the crampons popped. Snow looked to be in great condition for soloing though this is well above my comfort level! Smashing effort. My shoulders are tense and gassed just from watching. I’d be petrified of getting to the very top and having to faff about in a cruddy cornice. I love it at 48:00 when you can see the bulge of the cornice. Did you carry a rope coiled in case you needed to bail off? What gear did you take to bail off? Thanks for a brilliant video, thoroughly enjoyed 👍👍
thanks! ye the ice section was nice and spicy, just have to take extra care that the axes were bomber before moving. ye should have angle the gopro further up coz the cornice was pretty massive! ye had a rope in my bag, plus 2 ice screws, some slings, and a regular set of nuts. also had a petzl connect on. thankfully didnt have to use any of it and just descended down gully no. 4.
Was this a recent ascent ?
this was monday this week
Amazing conditions and great climb 👍
Amazing effort mate, my hands and feet were sweating the whole way 😂
Impressive . . . High degree of Exposure . . . .10/10 Video!
awesome stuff man, very pleasing to watch :D
❤ god protected you
Very impressive 💪
Did you downclimb the first bit after ambodach or abseil?
Ye I down climbed it, little bit of winding to get the easiest line but was ok. There was some abseil tat on a pinnacle on the right at the top of it.
Can the ridge be done without ropes? @@Jonathan.L.C.Wilson
@@Akash-ox6fl I did the ridge without using a rope, although if you don’t like down climbing the first bit off am bodach has some tat to ab off.
Madness
Did you attach the gopro to your rucksack with an invisible stick?
Go pro max is on the selfie stick in my bag, the camera clips out the section where the stick is in the frame.
Nicely done 👌
Nice! Loved the vid, it only tells half the story! I’d love to see what your feet were doing too! One day the technology will be there. I loved when you could see down below 😮 Looks like a super fun route. I was with you on your lead but I definitely would’ve swapped lead before that steep rock pitch 😆 fingers crossed we get a bit more winter this year
nice climb! bravo! :)
Great video. I can see that you are using cams on wet surface as well ... Is that safe? How cams behave in the environment like this when its not dry?
Ye ones used on this climb seemed pretty solid. Cams work ok on slightly frosted up rock, but not when there is verglass on the rock.
super cool, even in the literal sense of the word
Amazing man!
Excellent video. Quick Q. What made you choose one axe instead of two ? Cheers.
its more of a mountain traversal kinda route, with short relatively easy, if exposed bits of scrambling/climbing/ downclimbing so the walking axe kept it more fun. I did have a second climbing axe on my rucksack just in case, but i never ended up using it.
sweet brother’ are you rocking the Garmin Fenix ?
yes, garmin fenix 6X pro 👍
Must be how those icemen wound up stuck in those glasiers.
