accurascale said it would come with some black ones aswell
Hi thank you for the comment! And thanks for the insight I obviously missed that 😊👍
I guess the coupling plastic is a injection grade plastic and probably not going to react to uv, like the rubbery fone case plastic does to sunlight and to oil and grease off your hands!
Hi John thank you for the comment, I’m sure Accurascale will have done much research into this before manufacturing but will be interesting to see long term 😊👍
I had the LNER in desert sand made by Dapol. I only sold it a few months ago.
Hi thanks for the comment, that’s great to know! Have you sold to go for the Accurascale or just not wanting the model anymore?
@YorkshireRailways I sold 100 locos last year and that was one of them. It was identical. I bought it because I collect military and it was sand coloured from it's war service. I haven't decided on the Accurascale version because I have at least 8 models of this type: 7 are different LMR types
Wow quite the clear out 😊👍
The outsde tack looks good ..but it would be better smothing out the front switch back
Thanks for the comment and suggestion Kenneth. Could you clarify what you would change? If you check out my latest build video you’ll see both tracks running. Great for the input 😊👍
@YorkshireRailways hi Change the point to peco express type
I will look into it, it’s something I want to do with all of them at some point but the Hornby ones are working well 😊👍
Make ur station as big as poss
Hi Kenneth, thank you for the comment! And I believe the station area I’ve designated is large enough, certainly wouldn’t be great if I could have a bigger one but due to space I can’t really go any bigger. That being said it fits a five car HST in no issues so that’ll do for me 😊👍
Harry, great video bud, glad to see you bundled up a bit 🤣 okay so, I like the innovative approach to coupling, HOWEVER, I am quite concerned about just how translucent these are, from the photos they almost look a bit misty? If so they will look even worse at eye height than the original black ones. I also have the khaki LNER version on pre order. Couldn’t resist something different 👍 keep well brother
Ey up Hylton thank you so much! And yes the weather is still all over at the minute I thought things were starting to warm up but then it has gone cold again 😂 that’s something I did notice as well, I’m hoping to get an in person look when I decide which exhibition I want to go to this year to ask them in person about these concerns 😊 and that’s great to hear I’m sure it will look amazing shunting around Dunromin! I’m still undecided between the LNER or NE NCB but I know I want to go for the full sound DCC now I have got my hands on a controller. You as well my friend! 😊👍
I do like the odd colors so I'm all for the light coffee colored LNER tank engine and I'm sure you can tell how I spell "color" that I'm from the States and we have knuckle couplers with our HO scale trains so no problems with realism, but I can appreciate Accurascale's solution. Some clear plastics don't turn yellow so let's hope they done their homework. Stay warm, Jersey Bill
Hello Mucka 😂
Hi Jersey Bill thanks for the comment as always! Yes the LNER is very tempting will have to see how far my budget can stretch but at the same time it is coming next year so should have plenty of time to save up 😊 and it’s interesting the differences to model railwaying or should say railroading between here in the UK and our friends across the pond state side. And this is true and knowing Accurascale I’m sure they have but can’t wait to hit a show this year and be able to ask more questions in person 😊👍
Are you running the loco on DCC without a decoder? It is making a horrible noise… outside of that great review!
Hi thank you for the comment and no this is on DC with the Hornby DC controller. Know it’s not the greatest but wanted to upgrade to DCC so didn’t see point in upgrading to then have to buy a DCC controller as well. TMC have reviewed my review and deem it faulty so it’s being sent back for a replacement 😊👍
@ oh I see that’s fair, DCC is definitely worth upgrading to for a large layout like yours! Have you bought a controller yet? I have the Digitrax Zephyr and recommend that and I’ve also heard great things about the NCE Powercab and Gaugemaster DCC system. Also I’m not sure that 9F is faulty, I think a lot of them run that way (check out Sam’sTrains review to see what I mean as his runs even more sluggish than yours).
I have gone for the NCE power cab myself, got it for a good price and it’s super easy to use so ticks both my boxes. I will have to check out Sam’s Trains review to compare with mine, TMC have checked out the review and said it does seem faulty so it has gone back for a replacement 😊👍
@ the power cab is a great option (truth be told I prefer it to the Zephyr and only went for the Zephyr because I got a good deal on it)! Good to know that TMC thinks yours is faulty though, fingers crossed the replacement will be better 🤞
Yes I’m hoping so to, it should be coming early this week as I sent it back last Thursday 😊👍
Hi, I also bought Black Price at the bargain price from TMC. Running with the Hornby HM7000 DCC decoder, runs really well and quietly. I've had no issues with it, very happy with it! Sorry to hear you had issues with yours.
Hi David thanks for the comment and I’m glad you have got a good one. TMC have looked at the review and have deemed it faulty so Its being sent back for a replacement hopefully the new one is on par with everyone else’s 😊👍
Love accurascale 😊
I’m yet to try a locomotive from them but have heard amazing things. My Class 60 or Class 50 will be the first 😊👍
I think when two companies make the same model, consumers alway win coz they wanna make the best bang for your buck model possible!
Hi thank you for the comment and this is very true, especially looking at the Cavalex vs Accurascale they seem to be very similar but really good quality 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways indeed! I got cavalex ones as they came out first but I am curious to see how the accurascale ones match up!
@@learningoogauge3452 that’s great which one did you go for? And I have got both on order, will be doing a comparison video between the two. Three if I decided to pick up a Hornby one as well but will just be going for Cavalex and Accurascale for now 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways nice I've subbed so I look forward to seeing that! I have a few Hornby ones and tbh they're really good, lighting is a bit bright and detail is a bit worse but it's more than sufficient especially if you wanna save some money! I went for 60062 Sonia steel on steel and the the GBRf and colas - I'm getting the colas one debranded to look like the GBRf variant :) which Accurascale one did you order?
Amazing thank you for subscribing! And that’s good to know, I know there’s a few Hornby class 60’s on offer currently. And nice I hope you enjoy it. I am currently running mine in for a review that will be coming on Friday! 😊👍
I went for the NE NCB one in black but the LNER one looks good to wish I’d the funds to buy it as well
Hi Thank you for the comment and it’s the one I’m really tempted for just down to the unusual cab, I’m in too minds do I go all out for one and get DCC sound or do I get both and just get the DC and chip them at a later date 🤔 which version have you gone for? 😊👍
@ I got the DC one as all my locomotives are DC you could buy the DC ones and chip them yourself but will possibly cost the same in the end as just buying the DCC ones if you use the chip from Accurascale that’s fitted
@ cool, and yes granted long term it will cost me more but I’m thinking short term means I can get both livery options. Guess it depends if I get my layout fully DCC operational
@@YorkshireRailways if chipping them later then going for two DC models is fine that would be how I would do it as I’ve not got a big budget so can get the locomotives just chip them when I can
@ what I tend to do is set myself a budget each month. But I tend to buy from Rails of sheffield my local shop but they allow you to buy outright pre orders so I either go in and pay a bit off each time or ill buy them outright whilst I have the cash 😊👍
I shouldn't worry about yellowing. There is no reason they should be any worse then the windows in locos and rolling stock
Hi Thanks for the comment! And that’s true I never really thought about that as a factor. It is great to see new innovation made even if it’s simple 😊👍
It doesn’t need to be hugely heavy. It has 10 driving wheels giving pulling power.
Hi thank you for the comment! And no not a massive amount but me personally compared with locomotives of similar size it did feel a little under weight. I do need to weigh this properly to compare but in a just holding two locos in your hands you get a feel for the heavy ones and the not so. But it’s each to their own 😊👍
hence why I wont buy new hornby, my 9f's are 1980s/1990s tender drive and will out perform this. plus regularly serviced as well.
@@vikingsmb Hi thank you for the comment, I wouldn’t let a clearly faulty model put you off buying new models. Plenty of great ones out there 😊👍
Sorry mate, 1st and last time I watch your reviews. You seem to try and copy a certain other youtuber, but your filming skills are poor. Did not watch the whole thing but the 1st 15 mins was enough. You can tell you are not a technical man. Roof vents slide not pivot, and those gold pipes in the accessory bag are drain cocks, not 'pipes as such'
Hi Karl, sorry to hear the video was not to the standard you enjoy. I can assure you that my style is in no means copying at all it’s just the way I explain things. Should you prefer another channel that is absolutely okay. My intention with my reviews is just to review models I want to add to my collection rather that chasing views, I simply do it for the fun of making them and being able to talk to like minded folks about trains. I am still a relative beginner in the hobby so am not up on all the ‘techincal’ parts of locomotives so do sometimes get things wrong in terminology, but bit of a bold statement to say you can tell I’m not a technical man when you don’t know me personally. As for filming skills, it’s a hobby I’m trying to get better at but I do not have all the money in the world to get a fancy camera I’m simply using my phone on a tripod. The shed is a little cramped a point in hindsight I should have made more accessible to film but I can’t really change that without rebuilding the whole layout. Again sorry the channel isn’t to your taste but that’s more than okay there are plenty of model railway channels out there I’m sure you’ll find one you like. All the best 😊👍
From my observations in regards to the 60081 model. I think Rails and Cavalex models are going to be covering the EWS/GWR early 2000's version as the Hornby model is based on the LSL/GWR version that is part of the 1/1 collection so they may not be duplicating Cavelex Models on that front as such. 60029 however is a duplicate of the limited edition model that Cavelex/Rail Exclusive as doing. From my understanding, Hornby are trying their best to avoid duplicates with their models as the Loadhaul livery is as the following. Hornby are doing 60008 "Gypsum Queen II" in its 1997 livery. Accurascale are doing 60007 in the mid 1990's Loadhaul livery and Cavelex Models are doing 60059 as Swinden Dalesman. All are based on the mid 1990's I believe and will have the red/white warning flashes. Personally I don't mind the Cavalex Models Class 60 having a C4 drive system as Heljan and Piko has used the C4 drive system for years and it helps better on uneven tracks. I have the new Cavalex Models 60062 and I really love it!
Hi Thank you for the comment and really in-depth knowledge! It will be interesting to see the differences when all three come to reality to see if there’s any noticeable differences. Glad you’re enjoying your Cavalex class 60 I presume you have gone for steel on steel? I am still waiting on mine but cannot wait! 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways Yes mate. That's the one. I call it the "Leopard" livery as it kind of hints at a Leopard pattern in some ways. My 60062 is non sound because like with 60100 in DB I am getting from Accurascale, it will be display only as I am more of a BR man. Also besides 60098 from Cavalex/Rails with sound I want, I am also after Transrail 60097 that is another special commission. Here is a tip. Look in the manual for the clues and then hunt them down as I want to secure one before they all sell out. As 60097 is non standard too. All the best mate. Peter.
Sounds like you have quite the collection coming Peter. I unfortunately missed the postman yesterday as I had gone out for a friends birthday and lone behold the good old postie came ten minutes after I’d left and I missed the ring door bell as I was driving. Gutted! It’s being rescheduled for tomorrow so fingers crossed 😊👍 All the best my friend! Harry
@@YorkshireRailways No problem. I have covered my model of 60062 and I love the quality. You won't be disappointed I am sure. I am just eagerly awaiting 60098 to come in stock and I am going to pounce on it like a Lion. I mainly do BR nowadays so that it mostly my era. Just imagine if Cavalex Models did a Class 150/0 1984 3 car set. Only 150001 and 150002 are official prototypes. I would have the BR Provincial ones for sure.
Here’s hoping you get one! And yes I think Accurascale or Cavalex will maybe branch out to some DMU’s or more passenger orientated stock. I’m hoping Accurascale branch out to a HST as I’d love to get my hands on the more detailed version from Hornby but can’t justify the cost
That just doesn’t sound right . Think you may have a duff one . I’d send it back while TMC still have stock
Hi Russell thanks for the comment! And yes I contacted TMC who has watched the video and also conclude the model is not right, they knew their stock was getting low and have put one aside for me and awaiting mine being returned. I will do an update review when the new one arrives 😊👍
I have recently bought "Black Prince" sound fitted ESU from Olivia's Trains. No discount. No problems and runs fine on all curves and smoothly at low speeds. No derailments. Very happy with decor and no glue issues. I have an Ecos controller. I also purchased a while ago the Hornby R3987 BR 9F "92194" weathered also sound fitted ESU. This also runs fine, although the front bogie can derail on one set of points. I do not know if it is the same tooling. It may be.
Hi thanks for the comment! And yes seems to be a unanimous mindset that the Hornby 9F is a great runner and has no problems. I would love to try the sound option eventually when I get round to chipping them all 😂. I have contacted TMC where I bought mine from and they have seen the video and said yeah something isn’t right and are sending me a replacement out asap. So will do an updated review once it is here and we shall see if it’s any better 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways Really glad TMC are replacing it. I am sure you will be pleased with the replacement.
@ Hope so, I am a big fan of the real life engine so hopefully the new one is a dream 😊👍
I'm in Australia. My new Black Prince runs fine, although not as good as my railroad evening star. Could have something do do with the temperature in my train room - not minus 3 degrees C. but plus 40 degrees C.! It just wants to behave, get it all over with and get back into it's box!!!
Hi Trevor thanks for the comment, and yes that could be the case but I have tried mine since it’s warmed up and it’s the same issue. Think unfortunately it’s just a dud. But blimey don’t envy you in 40 degrees C. All the best mate 😊👍
Does look a bit lightweight as there new class black seems to be on youtube videos I have seen, The detailing is OK, but the brake shoes really could be more convincing instead of sawn off excuses. I wander how it compares with it Bachmann conterpart?
Hi thanks for the comment and yes for me it does seem a little light, I do need to weigh it and compare with other locomotives of a similar size but I don’t think it is going to be heavier than my Princess royal class. As for detail I do like think it’s packed with so much fine detail, can’t speak for accuracy as I’m not that up on stuff like that. I’d be tempted to get a Bachmann 9F to compare but do know it’s a bit of an older model tooling in comparison 😊👍
I said, "Just pin it down," but glue it down where the points are. It would be difficult if it weren't. So sorry, I have changed my mind. You have done it right. Unfortunately, we are all on a tight budget. Me, in particular, am on a very tight budget. That is the nature of the world, now.
Yes haha I found this out the hard way so you don’t have to 😂 hope your layout build goes okay Duncan, best advice is take your time and do it properly rather than cutting corners 😊👍
I would just pin it down. When you ballast, the Cork should glue down as well.
Hi Duncan, as I’ve found out the hard way. I would take the time to glue the cork personally. Drilling for point motors is a lot harder when the cork is not secure and can make a bit of a mess 😊👍
The point that has melted. If it works, use it underneath but use it near the front to be able to change it should it be needed.
That is my plan, for not it’s still in place, still works so will do nicely in the under layout fiddle yard I’m planning on building 😊👍
May be in the future, if digital won't cope with the points you have. Unifrog points may be the way. I have seen a lot of people on here have those, or the Gaugemaster ones. I have still to start my layout. I have so much in rolling stock and locomotives, I will be going down the root of DC. I just want to start on my layout. I have so much to do before that. Well, another great video, and very interesting.
Hi Duncan, glad you enjoyed the video and yes it is something that has crossed my mind but I’ve seen to get power just need to add droppers throughout and it should all work fine. If not unfortunately I will have to change it all for electro frog points to allow for better connection but time will see 😊👍
You may want to check the back to back on the loco. That may be the reason for your derailment. The buzzing could be your Controller, if it is either a PWM or a feedback controller. Great review and video.
Hi Duncan thank you for the comment, yes this has been suggested I will look into it thanks! And yeah the controller definitely isn’t the best I have. However I am in the process of going DCC just need to chip all my locos. Glad you enjoyed the review and hope you enjoy the channel! 😊👍
If you haven’t got one may I suggest buying a rolling road to run your locomotives in best purchase I ever made
Hi thank you for the comment, yes a rolling road is definitely on my list as I’d prefer to run locos in saying it rather than on my track. Don’t know why seems a lot safer that way and I’ll be able to run my DCC locos with sound whilst I wire up my layout 😊👍
I wouldn't use a Hornby DC controller. Try it with another brand of controller, and you may find the running might improve.
Hi thanks for the comment! 😊 definitely the Hornby DC controller is not the best however I have recently got a new controller but it’s so I can upgrade to DCC. Only trouble is I now have to chip all my locos which isn’t going to be cheap 😂
Hornby experience
Hi thank you for the comment. I wouldn’t agree on all Hornby’s locomotives. They have a huge catalog of models so it’s clear not all are going to be home runs 😊👍
Horrible ,motor buzz suggests your DC controller may need replacement. Long wheelbase loco and tight curves do not go well together but maybe back to backs on drivers may need checking?
Hi Stephen thanks for the comment! And it’s just the Hornby select controller from train sets, they always sound like this when attempting a crawl. They’re just not great, I have just upgraded to DCC but need a small fortune to upgrade all my locos in one go 😂 yes it’s something I need to check as it was derailing on third radius so clearly something isn’t right. I’ve also contacted TMC where I purchased from to see what they have to say on the matter hopefully they can help 😊👍
Horrendous glue marks to the cab window frames on just about every example of this 9f I've come across has put me off new releases from Hornby for a while. Unacceptable quality control for a modern RTR loco
Hi thanks for the comment, I didn’t even realise but does look like thick glazing seems to only be through the side you can see it. For me personally it doesn’t detract from the rest of the detail. But I can get how it would bother some 😊👍
Hi Harry. I'd have to agree with most of the other comments. Mine runs extremely well on curves even tighter than 2nd radius, and will happily haul both my very heavy Welsh coal train and 14 Lima BR Mk1 coaches, neither of which are known for their free-running characteristics. I think Hylton's right: it sounds as if yours is faulty. Don't delay (like I have on a couple of occasions), and send it back for a replacement, as at £150 it's excellent value for money.
Hi Stephen, thank you for the comment! And yes it does seem like most have a very good model in comparison to mine. Like Hylton says it’s definitely faulty. I have contacted TMC and await to hear back from them to see where to go from here. But you’re quite right at that price it’s hard to say no 😊👍
@YorkshireRailways You should have any difficulty getting it replaced (or refunded, if you so wish). TMC is a reputable company. Buy if you do, Consumer law is very clear in such circumstances and is on your side. PS: I guess the reason these 9Fs can operate over exttemely tight curves is the flangless centre driving wheels, which, of course, are prototypical.
@ yes I’ve heard great things about them but I’m ashamed to say it’s my first time shopping with them 😂 but I’ll get it sorted. Preferably would like to have the model but depends if they have more in stock they can exchange it for. And yes I did notice that it’s a very clever design 😊👍
I love 9Fs and even commissioned an artist for a painting of one that now sits over my fireplace. I have the earlier release of this model and have been really ahppy with it. I might have given consideration to this model, but my problem with it is the name. 92023 only carried the name Black Prince in preservation which, without significant artistic licence, means it only looks right running on a layout that depicts a preserved line, which mine doesn't.
Hi thank you for the comment! And that painting sounds amazing! And yes not to everyone’s taste but the North Norfolk Railways has a special place in my heart so I had to get one 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways That makes sense. I've lost track of who owns Black Prince now, but I know that it was once owned by David Shepherd.
@ I believe it is still owned by the North Norfolk railway but it’s ran out of its boiler card so won’t be allowed to run until it has some sort of overhaul which will be ££££££
No surprise More surprised if the Hornby stock worked, feel sorry for people who still look forward to their range releases and pre order stuff for them prices Whatever happened to 2006-2010 Hornby
Hi, thanks for the comment. Would disagree as there’s plenty of Hornby models that are a class act. But as with all manufactures there will be defective models. It’s just an unfortunate event when you get one 😊👍
NICE WORK ON THE VIDEO ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Dennis, thank you for the comment! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways You're welcome
I think the Hornby 9F is a beautiful-looking model. Your observations 100% mirror mine - of another variant. Mine was hauling a 10-coach low-drag BR blue/grey rake. The motor current draw started increasing substantially, up to 500 mA. I saw the 'Black Prince sale' and through the poor performance, I abstained - sale lost. Mine is with Hornby now, hopefully to at least replace the motor ... not certain what I really want, but it's obvious I cannot use the 9F on a regular basis. My Bachmann 94xx tank has no problems hauling the same rake - and doesn't slow much! My curves are 95% 4th radius, 5% 3rd radius and my 9F slowed A LOT. Al.
Hi Al, thanks for the comment and that’s interesting to hear and I’m sorry you’ve suffered the same issues I have, hopefully it’s just we’re the unfortunate souls and we have both received duds. I’ve contacted TMC on where to go with mine in hope of either a replacement or repair 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways I've a B12 and an S15 - both with the same motor as the 9F - yet these draw ~0.17 - 0.25 A maximum and run pretty well. It might be a 'bad batch of motors' - magnets, commutators, brush alignment - or simply the motor cannot handle a big locomotive.
That’s interesting to hear Alan. I’ve contacted TMC where I bought mine from and they are sending me out a replacement as they’ve seen the review and said that something isn’t right. So hopefully the new one is as good as everyone else’s 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways I hope so. This is a fantastic-looking model, and deserves to function in accordance with it's looks / function. Mine's at Hornby QC / Servicing - whatever they're called. I would love to have a happy ending as well. Al.
@ let me know how you get on, I had my Sir Nigel Gresley have to go back and they fixed it up and it runs super well now. When I first got it it used to jam all the time so I can’t fault Hornby’s customer services on that. Nor can I fault TMC they are sending me a new one so can’t wait to see hopefully an amazing model! 😊👍
A very fair and honest review, thanks YR. I purchased a Hornby Black Prince (only slightly discounted) in August. My initial reaction was to be very impressed with its appearance both overall and in terms of detail. I didn't notice a significant lack of weight (but didn't specifically examine this aspect). This is certainly a problem with all my Hornby A4 locos (main range). At the moment, I do not possess a layout, simply a short Y-shaped test track. I was very satisfied with the 9F's running when crawling and at moderate speed. It handled the points very capably at the limited range of speeds possible on my track. But I don't know how it will perform on curved track, when travelling at speed in reverse and when hauling a prototypical consist. It would be very disappointing if the torque was inadequate and I would then question, as you do, the quality of the motor and the product's value for money. But at the moment, I'm not able to offer an opinion. Hope these comments help!
Hi Rob thank you for the comment and kind words. Glad to know you have a good 9F. I have decided to contact TMC to seek advice on the performance of mine as many do seem to have good runners 😊👍
I also purchased the Black Prince from TMC at the bargain price and received it late December 2024, mine runs really well on 3rd, 2nd and even on parts of my first radius track I have no issues with derailing or pulling large (to me anyway) mixed coaches and wagons over 20 units long. I do have a DC Gaugemaster controller and the 9F motor is almost completely silent with really smooth control over all the speed ranges. So as others have suggested I would recommend a return for a replacement as this is a fine loco. Wishing you all the best and hope you get a good un.
Hi Paul, glad to know you have managed to get a good Black Prince! I have contacted TMC to seek their advice on how to move forward because as you say multiple people seem to have bought them and all seem to run a lot better than mine. Will update when I find out more info 😊👍
This review sounds just like a Sams trains review. You've studied his style and cloned every move!
I hoped you asked his permission to copy his channel !
The loco looks absolutely stunning!
Sams trains doesn’t own the idea of a model Railway review, go back and watch channels like Intercity82, a guy who started making model reviews in the late 2000s. Of course there’s going to be similar talking points in any review, like box, detail, performance, etc. Its not something you need permission for, unless you’re directly ripping an idea off.
Not really. Sam spends a great deal of time dissecting the mechanism whereas YR doesn't (at least in this review). That is not a criticism of either of them. All reviewers are entitled to adopt their own approach, provided they are fair and constructive. Both are, IMO.
@@robmckenzie2538 He even uses the same vocab eg Repeating the word stunning over and over.
Hi there, Google lookin model - Have you Run it in” before pulling a load or dyu not have to do that these days?..
Hi thank you for the comment! And yes the model was run in 30 mins in either directions before adding a load. Some manufacturers say you don’t but me personally I always do 😊👍
It's irritating to see that there is a recurrent inconsistency in the quality of the motors Hornby mounts into their engines... I should play to the lottery, my TWO 9F (yeah, two, I'm a nutcase...) have no motor problems... There is a S-15 expected in December this year, the one I own now have a faulty motor, I'll try my chance again... Mines had only been run on 484mm radius Piko curves, what you can call R2 1/2 radius, and I had no problems with that, unlike the Bachmann 9F I have that derails all over the place. I think they might perform well on R2. Completely agree on the price. You have Dapol Manors, more complicated on the livery, for GBP50 less...
Yes, Hornby do seem to have a problem with quality consistency...
Hi Olivier thank you for the comment. Touch wood this is the first Hornby locomotive I’ve had issues like this with, I’ve contacted TMC where I bought it from to seek advice and where to move forward. Good to hear you have no issue running your 9F’s on R2 I’ll have to give it another try if I can get a replacement sent out 😊👍
Something must be wrong with yours, just bought mine from TMC, its a great runner, it pulls 40 coal wagons easily, these are old wagons, 40 years at least, i do run on DCC and have fitted sound in it too.
Hi Ray, thank you for the comment! And yes I fear as much I have just contacted them to see where we can go from here. Hopefully a swap and a new one might prove to be better. If so I will do an updated review to show the true potential. I imagine on DCC with sound it’s amazing and I can’t wait to get mine chipped. Which decoder did you go with if you don’t mind me asking? 😊👍
I picked up an old Hornby TTS Decoder with speaker, I am well pleased with it, used a 21 to 8 pin adaptor which I had already. You can easily spend a lot of money!!
@@raymondjohnson6129 that sounds good and yes I have about 30+ locomotives currently so going to cost a fair bit to DCC chip and sound them all
Sams trains replaced the motorwith a coreless one and now much better! Maybe check the gauging of the wheels, could be the cause of the derailing?
Hi David thanks for the comment! Yes I would imagine that would be a good solution, however unlike Sam I don’t really possess the talent to do that and I wouldn’t feel comfortable trying whilst it’s still in the warranty period. I haven’t checked the gauging so will do that and see if adjustments are needed to allow smoother running. Thank you 😊👍
Great review. I think I stick with my tender drive version. Stay safe mate
Hi Gordon, thank you for the comment! And it would seem from other comments that my example shouldn’t be the case and that it more than likely is a faulty model. I’ve contacted TMC for advice to see what they can do for me 😊👍
Why is it buzzing ? as mine don't .
Hi Alan, thanks for the comment. It’s my controller that’s the Hornby select from train sets. It’s not very good but I am in the process of upgrading to DCC, I have the controller just need chip my locos 😊👍
The last 3 I bought from Hornsby had to go back for repair, I’m no longer buying!
Hi Bill, thanks for the comment and I’m sorry this is your experience. I have a feeling this one will be as well, the motor just doesn’t seem to be performing as others suggest it should. All the best 😊👍
You need to change your controler Patrick Quinn IRL
Hi Patrick thank you for the comment. Yes fully aware my controller is terrible but I already have. The only problem is it’s DCC so I’m currently in the process of chipping my locos which isn’t going to be cheap 😂 so because I’m taking this step I won’t be changing my analog controller. All the best 😊👍
I got one of these sound fitted for less than 200 quid. I think it’s from the first batch (number 92002), and it performs pretty well. It’s a shame buying models these days feels a bit like a lottery. Will it work properly, or will it not? Are you feeling lucky today?
Hi thanks for the comment and wow that does sound like a bargain. Yes unfortunately it can be like that but I’ve being lucky this far. I’m tempted to get into contact with TMC and see what they think. All the best and take care 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways sending them a polite enquiry can’t hurt!
@@Alpha-oo8 yeah did that this morning but I imagine been the weekend I won’t hear back till Monday
Looks great but runs like a pig is a common theme. It makes you wonder if you got the one out of a thousand that performs dismally or did you get the normal 9F Black Prince. Nice review, Jersey Bill
Hi Jersey Bill thanks for the comment! And yes it is making me scratch my head. I’m tempted to contact TMC to see their thoughts on the matter and see if I actually have a faulty model. May be the best thing going forward. Thanks for the kind words mate and all the best 😊👍
@@YorkshireRailways I think you, Me, and Hylton are of the same mind send it back and get a replacement. Good luck
Yes I’m going to get in touch with both Hornby Direct and TMC to see their thoughts and I think it will be going back for a replacement.
Is that the 9F or your controller making that awful 50 Hz hum ? sounds like 1/2 wave rectification ? and unless you bought it from TMC for £149.99 then yes you have wasted your hard earned money :)
Hi thank you for the comment! And more than likely it’s the controller. I never bothered upgrading my analogue controller from the Hornby select that comes with the train sets as I knew I would be upgrading to a DCC controller at some point which I did get for Christmas. However it means I now need to chip all my locos, so for review purposes I will still be using the Hornby one for now. I’m interested to try taking the chip out of my Class 91 and put it in the 9F to test if it is the controller. Might be good for another video? And well I did get it from TMC in their after Christmas sale but I had a further 5% knocked off from a discount code I had in a magazine so I can’t complain about the price just the quality of the model. I’m tempted to see TMC’s thoughts on if this loco needs to go back for a swap or if it is knows to run like this. Anyway thank you for the comment and all the best 😊👍
Guagemaster analogue controllers use half wave rectification because DC motors run much better with it. PS Although they don't make the din that the one in the vid does!
