When You Break A Nail…
In this episode of "Festival Sessions" we are joined by my good friend Thatcher Harrison. Here he is playing his own composition called "Broken Nail Blues"
Thatcher's Bio
Thatcher Harrison is a guitarist and a composer. As a composer, Thatcher tries to expand the boundaries of classical guitar repertoire through what he calls “classical fusion” composition: pieces based in classical composition and performance techniques, but with influences from other genres such as jazz music, rock music, fingerstyle guitar music, blues music, pop music, folk music, film score music, and world music. As a guitarist, Thatcher chooses to perform programs consisting primarily of his own compositions. Thatcher is currently working to establish his career as a concert artist, having performed concerts for Boston Classical Guitar Society, Austin Classical Guitar Society, Twents Gitaarfestival, Rhode Island Guitar Guild, Pleven Guitar Festival, Domaine Forget International Music Festival, The 21st Century Guitar Conference, and Boston Guitarfest. Thatcher Harrison is currently studying for his Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at New England Conservatory with Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe, and he studies composition privately with Ian Wiese.

Classical guitar as an instrument is the most antique style of instrument within the modern guitar family. Classical guitar music to me is just when one plays finger style on a traditional nylon string, Spanish/ classical guitar. And then play whatever the fuck You want on it. Preferably between your legs. And don't use a pic because that's illegal. There was nothing wholy classical so european about the classical guitar in the first place since it comes from an arab instrument and it's therefor a product of cultural exchance, Yes bach wrote music for this instrument but that was originally for the lute; an ARAB instrument in witch arab music was traditionally played on it not classical music. Therefore....... Deep breath... You ready? there is no classical guitar..... It would actually be more accurate to just call it a spanish guitar...... But since we're just using it as a name here its.... It's literally anything played fingerstyle on this ..... The classical guitar has always BEEN about cultural exchange and diversity..... Like pretty much any other guitar community....

Thank you you make it very interesting plus of Julian a master I have four guitars and adore every one of the, one of the an Adalid, the projection of this guitar is outstanding A Ramires that I love of corse, Jose Cuevas from Seville and the most humble, and a beloved one a Cordoba luthier and this last being the most humble happen to have the sweetest of the soul and voice, Love (like being my children) every one of them, and is difficult to say I prefer this over that because everyone of the have a different and wonderful spirit

fYI the Godin Grand Concert has a curvature to the fretboard. I really love that and not come across this on any other than Godin guitars. I use this guitar but no way does it sound much like a classical guitar. Good tool tho.

Seems like tabs can show someone how to play a song without them learning the actual language of music. Could be a good starting point for the intimidated, as long as it doesn’t become a crutch.

The tablature with the rhythmic stems is a bit better than without, but you still don't see the notes or melody.

Sorry, but the recording of the guitars is terrible! I've played this video on all different devices to be sure it wasn't a fluke. The sound is so thin like an EQ with just the mids high scooped to the max and the basses muted. I own a C7 and have played a C5. They have a typically modern "well rounded" and broad sound, whereas I often prefer a more focused traditional Spanish sound and also have a Spanish-made guitar for that preference. The C5 and C7 are fine guitars and probably the best bang for the buck you will get buying new if you can only have one good guitar, but unfortunatley that isn't reflected in this video. Someone asked about the action. It is a modern user-friendly medium lowish height as apposed to the historic high action of Spanish guitars. Extremely playable for anyone. If Torres where building this design today this is where he would have put it.

An important thing to mention here is the table top or soundboard, where much of the sound comes from. Every guitar I've seen Bream play, appears to have a spruce top.

I honestly had no idea Prelude 1 by Lobos is that popular, Ive learned about this compositor from my guitar teacher and fell in love with his pieces, they are super fun to play for me! Wont ever stop playing them 😅 In moments like this Im quite happy that somehow, i didnt hear pieces mentioned in this video that many times and had no idea that they are so popular, and I am playing classic guitar for 8 years now hah

Well done video with lots of good advice. I'm glad you included the Kremona brand. Cordoba is a popular brand and they are reasonably good guitars for the money. Years ago I tried the Cordoba C9 and C10, and then some of the Kremona models. Right away I liked the Kremona guitars better and felt like you were getting more for the money. I ended up buying the Kremona Romida RDS. I don't know how consistent either brand is from one guitar to the next, but for the money, the Kremona guitars came much closer to a professional level guitar than the Cordoba guitars I tried.

I understand that these pieces are good for learning the various hand techniques, but I find them not very interesting at all. What if I don't find the typical classical repertoire that engaging? Is it possible to learn the required techniques of classical guitar using songs from the modern popular era?

When using the first option (external mic) do players ever run their microphone into something like an acoustic guitar amp rather than just a speaker in order to be able to do things like EQ it and add reverb? I'm trying to get into playing gigs at small venues but I'm a little confused about how the set-up would work. Let's I go with the first option, an external mic in front of my guitar which is then run into a speaker or amp. Say I'm playing inside of a venue that has both an inside and outdoor area, with a PA system including speakers in the outdoor area. Am I right in thinking that I would have to mic both my guitar up and my amp or speaker if I was using one? So it would be guitar -> mic -> amp/speaker -> mic -> venue PA system. I suppose I could run the mic directly into the venue's PA system, but which would mean I wouldn't need the amp or speaker, but that's assuming the venue's PA system has some sort of EQ, or if it doesn't I guess I just go without. Any help would be much appreciated. Edit: Also, I recently went to my local music shop and tried out my guitar and external mic with a fishman loudbox mini (60W) and it was very hard to get enough signal. I had to crank the volume and gain and put the mic very close in order to be audible, which is obviously not ideal. I'm really at a loss and not sure how to move forward from here. I thought I was going to go for the external mic+amp combo but after trying it it seems like it wouldn't work very well for me. I'm now looking at getting a pickup installed in my guitar but I'm not super keen on that either.
