Hearts and Minds: the Farmers helping save the Turtle Dove
Hearts and Minds: the Farmers helping save the Turtle Dove
In this wonderful video, our client and farming landowner Teresa Rous explains what turtle doves mean to her.
Across Britain, many farmers enormously lament the loss of beloved species that have vanished within their lifetime. Our role at Restore is to help put those species back.
Fortunately, thanks to some wonderful fortress like hedgerows and feeding ponds, Dennington Hall Farms in Suffolk still retains a small breeding population of turtle doves; our fastest vanishing breeding bird.
By reinstating low nutrient areas rich in weeds and wildflowers, increasing natural scrub and shallow wetlands, Restore will be working alongside the farm and its brilliant farm manager, Ryan McCormack, to rapidly increase turtle dove habitat over the coming years.
It’s the passion of farmers like Teresa, however, that make our job such a pleasure - and as always it’s very much a team effort when it comes to work on the ground!
We can’t wait till 2025 as we enter our second season. 🐤

The race is on to save the turtle dove
มุมมอง 93หลายเดือนก่อน
Since autumn 2023, the Restore team has been privileged to partner with Dennington Hall Farms in Suffolk, on a single species project aimed at conserving and restoring one of our most loved birds - the turtle dove. Having declined by a staggering 97% since 1970 and with fewer than 2000 pairs remaining, turtle doves have been the ultimate victim of our weeding the countryside, herbicides, scrubl...
Starting Small with Wilder Gardening

If we are to be trusted to restore nature across some of the largest estates and landscapes in the country, it seems sensible to practice at a much smaller scale. For the past four years, CEO Benedict Macdonald has been transforming a bland lawn at his home into a complex food web of anthills, wildflowers, nesting scrub and wetland. By restoring inch by inch, you develop a real understanding of...
Wilder Gamekeeping

Since August 2021, when we first met the team on the ground at Southill Estate in Bedfordshire, it was clear there is remarkable potential for so-called ‘traditional’ roles, such as gamekeeping, to migrate into the nascent sector of nature restoration. In many cases, gamekeepers, alongside farmers, naturally, are arguably the hardest working of rural employees: often working 18 hour days in the...
Joining the Dots

Today, celebrating World Environment Day, let’s take a moment to talk about landscape connectivity. 🔗 Our work at Owlett’s Farm in the heart of Ashdown Forest aims not only to restore this land for our client and his family, but play a much wider role in reconnecting the landscape. As the honey-buzzard flies, the aim is to create wetlands and wood pasture that draw in life from the surrounding ...
Human Beavering

The creation of leaky woody dams within woodland is one of many innovations the Restore team are using to restore ultra-complexity to Framewood, our ancient woodland project in Berkshire. The magic of leaky dams lies in their ability to create diverse habitats. By forming pools, riffles, and backwaters, they provide varied environments for aquatic and terrestrial species. The slowed water flow ...
Pertwood: Baseline Surveying
มุมมอง 493 หลายเดือนก่อน
How can you know how far you are going in the right direction, if you don’t know where you’ve begun? This of course is where baseline surveying comes in. The moment the RESTORE team take on a new site, our lead ecologist MATT COLLIS springs into action to work out what natural assets we already have on the ground. Surveys are a critical part of the work that we do - measuring what is on the gro...
Seeing the wood for the trees - waving goodbye 20 tonnes of invasive rhododendron.

Seeing the wood for the trees - waving goodbye 20 tonnes of invasive rhododendron. There are few things more satisfying than watching a landscape breathed back into life. And few of the changes in projects have been as stark as the early transformation of Framewood. Smothered in a cloak of rhododendron, you could barely walk through this beautiful ancient woodland - let alone see the struggling...
Scrub, Glorious Scrub

Last November, our team at Restore along with the landowners took action at Owlett's Farm in Suffolk, creating scrub piles from hedge cuttings. Such scrub islands are crucial for supporting wildlife and enhancing biodiversity by providing shelter, nesting sites, and foraging opportunities for various species. Diverse habitats are essential for sustaining wildlife populations and promoting resil...
The Pertwood Plain Project: World Rewilding Day Announcement

🦋RESTORE launches the Pertwood Plain Project on Global Rewilding Day: A 3000-acre new grazing plain for southern England’s beleaguered wildlife.🦋 RESTORE is delighted to launch our major flagship project for 2024: the restoration of 3000 acres of Wiltshire farmland to a replete grassland ecosystem. Salisbury Plain was once the Serengeti of the British Isles. The fossil record hints at a rich, c...
Rapid Restoration

Rapid Restoration! At Restore, we believe you should never do in a week, or a year, what you can do in a day. Like creating a small, chaotic riparian swamp in the heart of Ashdown Forest. Working with our landowner’s team of willing engineers, the self-styled “diesel beavers” got to work - creating randomness out of sameness, chaos out of order and crafting decay and slow/flowing habitats where...
Frog Spawn Count at Hamatethy Farm
มุมมอง 656 หลายเดือนก่อน
We were relieved to confirm that our senior ecologist, Matt Collis, was indeed fully waterproof and even amphibious in nature as he checked out the beaver pond frogspawn densities at Restore-managed Hamatethy in Cornwall. Beavers are truly the bringers of life but rarely is their impact more instantaneous and obvious than in increasing densities of amphibians; one of the fastest vanishing anima...

Is it possible to get involved with baseline surveys or any form of hands on direct volunteering work as part of annual workplace volunteering allowance? Many thanks.
