FACT: Wyatt Earp was NOT a "hero" -- he was a POS - He was JUST AS CORRUPT, JUST AS POWER HUNGRY and JUST AS CRIMINAL as the Clantons and all the other Bad Guys .. EVERY "heroic" STORY in EVERY FILM is a LIE - it's bullshit .. none of it is true .. Wyatt Earp was a PIMP - he forced women into Prostitution and he kept for himself 75% of every dollar they made .. he also got them hooked on Drugs .. He was a SCAM ARTIST -- his so-called "judging" of an illegal fight on a spit of land between the US and Mexico Proves he was a scam artist .. he stole tens of thousands of dollars .. as "deputy" he would use his pistol to crack the skulls of drunks - which was completely unnecessary .. as "deputy" he would force people to pay him "protection" money - exactly what the Mafia did for decades .. his gambling house were FIXED in favor of the house .. he stole probably hundreds of thousands of dollars from the players .. The ONLY reason anybody knows anything about "earp" and "tombstone" is because Earp lived long enough to sell his lies and bullshit to a Hollywood Screenwriter - it's HIS story .. full of HIS LIES .. Wyatt Earp is a CRIMINAL - a BAD GUY .. and not one film or book has ever told the TRUTH about the Earp Brothers' Criminality ..
Well, as an Australian and a film fan, I'm judging and comparing the two films, not the truthfulness of the story itself. Can you point me towards any resources that back up your claims? It might make an interesting video, although I don't know if an Australian doing a video exposing a mythic legend would go down very well.

Stop being gay.
So well done. Thanks for recommending it.
My pleasure, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I need to revisit this series and continue my quest to watch all of Marilyn’s films
The reason why I chose this image to draw was that I felt it showed how Jean Harlow may have looked as she aged. As she was wearing a look and a hairstyle many of her contemporaries chose to wear for the rest of their lives.
Very nice!
Thanks!
thank you for this wonderful drawing of River <3 I suffer from anxiety and your voice help me to relax a lot. River would have accomplished so much I miss him dearly
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Sorry to hear that you have anxiety, but I’m glad you were able to relax watching my video. River achieved a lot in his lifetime, but he could have done so much more. I’m curious about his take on Andy Warhol.
@@HamishDownie He could play any role very well, he could see and feel things different than most people do. with River you always felt a special connection with the characters he was playing. He was always deep into the roles :)
You are absolutely right about his deep connection with his roles. I think his brother has a similar connection to his roles
Gloria should have won. That’s one of the few greatest cinematic performances ever. And it’s one of the few greatest American movies ever. All About Eve is a really clever, fun soap opera and Bette is good in it. Judy is fantastic. But nothing was touching ‘Sunset’ and Swanson that year. It’s not even that close to me.
It’s definitely iconic. I still think the issue for voters was a general dislike of Swanson. She always said awards were like comparing apples and oranges in interviews
Dors was a talent. no question. She was not as supported as much as the US publicists - bad choices of men etc, bad choices, but as good as any blonde in that era - limited by UK film at that time, but she managed to push the boundaries. She also cared about her fans & public. Also, a terrific actress not based on Marilyn.
Definitely bad choices in men. She would have likely had more success in the US if she wasn’t with her then husband
Diana Dors was a great actress and very fanny lady. Cheers from New Orleans. USA.
I’m glad people outside of England have discovered her. Thank you for watching
I don't think the Darcies would be such dismal parents as to allow their own children grow without true principles. I wouldn't wish them Tom, Maria and Julia. Let's hope they did better.
I understand how you feel. Remember Darcy had a good father and he grew up with good principals but carried them out with pride, and of course Mr Wickham. But, my focus is more on the journey of Fanny rather than the parents. I don’t think I made this clear enough in the video, but what I meant was that MP would provide a skeleton story that would need to be fleshed out with the characters from P&P. I actually do think that MP started out as a sequel, but Austen may have felt it to be too constricting, so pivoted to original characters. Anyway, thank you so much for watching and commenting! Having conversations in the comment section is my favourite part of TH-cam.
The word you're looking for is misanthrope. I've seen the man who came to dinner with Monty Woolley. I can recall his face but can't really place him. So I did some research. Talk about a rabbit hole. Came across David Niven, a name I recall from The Guns of Navarone (sp) and My Man Godfrey.
Thank you! That's the word. I enjoyed him in "The Bishop's Wife" and "Since you went away". I need to watch "My Man Godfrey". I'll have to do my own trip down the rabbit hole as I do enjoy him as an actor.
Love the scenes from The Misfits. I think that film is underrated. Her time in the Actor’s Studio is very apparent in this performance! She really gained a depth and breadth from her training as evidenced by the role of Ros. PS: I enjoyed realizing that Thelma Ritter was her costar in two films- my favorite of all time, All About Eve, and The Misfits! Fun trivia
Actually, there’s technically another one, “As Young As You Feel”, but they don’t really share any scenes. It’s a good movie, if you haven’t seen it.
I often think of what a shame it is that Something’s Got to Give remains eternally unfinished. The film that has been loosely constructed was so funny, cute, and so, so promising. Plus, she was absolutely gorgeous. She never looked better in my opinion. Such a shame. We can wish and dream…. 🥹
I completely agree with you!
My ranking: 1. Judy 2. Bette 3. Gloria 4. Eleanor 5. Anne
Hi! Thanks for commenting! I've watched some of your videos. It's fair enough to give the Oscar to Judy Holliday, it was a year of so many iconic performances. Each nominee gave us the performance of a lifetime
@@HamishDownie Totally! I am not the biggest fan of Anne Baxter but all other 4 would be incredibly deserving in any year
I've only seen her in a few films, but I have to say that I have enjoyed her each time. But, film is very subjective and there's nothing wrong with having a different opinion. For example, I have a strong dislike of Timothy Chalamet for no objective reason.
@@HamishDownie Oh totally, there is nothing as subjective as art. I mean, my reviews are just my personal opinion, they are not the ultimate truth. Everyone reacts differently to a performance 😀
@FritzandtheOscars at the end of the day, it's all opinions. As long as we can help these wonderful films and actors not to be forgotten, that's our job done.
No it's widely known Gloria Swanson was Robbed! Not to mention she should have won the 1st ever oscar over Janet gaynor
I think there’s two schools of thought between Bette and Gloria being robbed. My guess with the first Oscar’s is that Gloria’s performance as Sadie Thompson was seen as not as good as Jeanne Eagels Star-making Broadway performance as Sadie in Rain. I really need to watch those Sadie films. That story was remade so often, and even Marilyn Monroe wanted to retell the story in the 60s. I have the DVD of “Sunrise”, so maybe I could watch the first Oscars Best Actress race next.
I love Bette in 'All About Eve,' but I would have given the Oscar to Gloria; she makes you sympathize with Norma although she's an awful person.
That is very true. Similar to what Tim Curry did in “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. It was a year of iconic performances making for a very difficult category. I really think “Eve” should have been awarded a special Oscar for best ensemble
@@HamishDownie 'All About Eve' would definitely have won the 'Best Emsemble' Award if the SAG Awards had existed then.
They are adding a technical award for Best casting, so that’s kind of the same as best ensemble
I am also an annual watcher of the '95 BBC version. So good.
It really is. But, as I've seen many, many people who are fans of the 2005 film, I'm thinking it might be worth rewatching.
Thanks for all these videos. I'm learning a lot. Altho, also a movie lover, I've barely delved deep into the actors or the history (except for The Highlander, the two mini series, and 4 sequels and Back to the future).
Glad you like them! I guess I started because my Grandmother had all the biographies and was interested in them. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed Hollywood fokelore like “Hollywood Babylon” and such
I dont think that Dean would have made a better Rocky Marciano than Paul Newman did. I think if he played that role next to his old flame as co- star it would have Flopped.
I imagine that the cast around Dean would have been different. It’s interesting how certain actors are seen at the time (such as River Phoenix and Christian Slater been seen as the same type), when they seem so different to us today.
U look creepy
Davis's wins were for Jezebel and Dangerous-- not Deception.
Thank you. I didn't realise that I said Deception!
🙄
And she didn’t age with face operations and skinny as a rake but she aged naturally and was always beautiful. Marilyn did a great job playing the sweet innocent blond but Diane was more real and natural.
Similar to Elizabeth Taylor. I do feel some sympathy for them with the pressure of wanting to remain young
Out of all of the blond bombshells she is by far the best actress. She’s on top with the best I’ve ever seen.
And the best singer. Her version of “The Gentleman is a Dope” is my favourite.
@@HamishDownie Yes I listened to her album and was again blown away by her voice. She is the most attractive great actress that I’ve ever seen and the best of the sexy singers of that music it amazes me. why such a massive talent hasn’t been celebrated like all of the greats
I became interested in her because of Anna’s book, so I’m part of the problem. I’m still planning on getting her box set and go through her films. The issue in Japan is her only film available is the Joan Crawford film, Berserk!
I like it because I was an extra in the movie!
Fantastic! What part were you in?
Hi Hamish, greetings from Kyoto! Looking forward to checking out Outrageous! Thanks for doing these great reviews.
Thank you for watching! If you do a search, you can find it on TH-cam. Let me know what you think!
With Frauds, exactly, What did I watch? Double indemnity was great. Maltese Falcon was not my cup of tea. Good to see another video from you, mate.
Thanks mate! Frauds is a very WTF movie, but that’s also it’s charm if that’s what you’re into.
If she had lived I think she would have married Joe DiMaggio again. They were very close before she died. He helped her through the hospital phase, see the TH-cam video on Marilyn and DiMaggio.
He did visit her grave to lay flowers until he passed away
😮 Judy won fair and square. Comedic tourdeforce 🎉
It’s an iconic performance for sure
Sorry to say, you are hard to follow. I recommend developing an actual script, then speaking with purpose and direction with fewer random pauses and "you know" interjections.
Interestingly, when I used a script, I was criticised for sounding like I was "reading". Thank you for your feedback
Nice! Can you try my favorite breakfast? It’s a green juice.
Thank you! Can you let me know the recipe?
Who the hell doesn't know who Michael Curtiz was?
You are entitled to your opinion, but, you know what? I didn't know him until recently despite watching many of his films. I'm pretty sure that outside of a film school, few people would be able to name him as director of Casablanca
This is a strange analysis. Yes, there are directors that tend to specialise in certain types of film and sometimes have distinction styles. This is either because they are very good in some aspects of filmmaking, or should I say, better at some things than others - say better at visual design rather than working with actors - or vice versa - OR they prefer to work in certain genres and certain themes. This comes about through the independent mode of film production we now have. But in the old days of Hollywood, directors were under contract to the studios and were simply assigned to a picture. That meant they had to be versatile. Curtiz was a very reliable director who could do a rip-roaring pirate saga, a medieval romance, and then switch to a wartime romance or a period musical. He wasn't limited to any particular style- he adopted the style that suited the picture and did it well. He directed over 120 films in America after doing about 50 in Hungary, so he was pretty diverse.
Perhaps I should have used more of a contemporary to Curtiz like John Ford, who was also working within the studio system. I think it's pretty easy to imagine a John Ford film. But, because of Curtiz's ability to direct just about any and every genre, it's pretty hard to imagine what a Michael Curtiz film would be like. Even someone like Howard Hawks who was also very diverse, you could argue that all his films had his DNA. This is nothing against him as a director, but my argument is that because of his difficulty to pigeonhole, he is hard to market to the public, therefore, the public are less likely to associate his name with his films, unlike a John Ford or a Howard Hawks.
Michael Curtiz, and he is remembered. As a director of great films. Taika Waititi will be remembered as the overrated hack who helped wreck Marvel Films. Waititi HOPES nobody will remember him.
I bet if you did a poll of 100 random people, most could identify Hitchcock as the director of Psycho. But, I doubt more than one or two would know that Michael Curtiz directed "Casablanca" or any number of the classic films he directed.
Please check out my poll in the community tab: th-cam.com/users/postUgkxiBOR16HU7PqCQUyte9e7LKByAAxmc_Ch
He also directed "Yankee Doodle Dandy" that same year and later directed the all time Christmas Classic "White Christmas."
Indeed, I talked a bit about them in the section on his musicals. Absolutely wonderful films.
I remember Michael Curtiz...he directed one of Elvis' only really good movies, 'King Creole'.
It was one of the films originally intended for James Dean, and Elvis based his performance on Dean’s in Rebel Without a Cause. I talked about it in my James Dean video: th-cam.com/video/eG7b9WPUDVw/w-d-xo.html
The generation that started talking about directors as artists regarded him as a non-auteur director - a skilled hack basically.
Pretentious boobs.
A non-auteur director, certainly, but "a skilled hack"? No. A skilled craftsman. Casablanca is a masterclass of direction.
@@ianwilliams6042 fair enough
I’m kind of on the same track, except that I called Curtiz a journeyman vs. the “Auteur” who would often remake the same film over and over such as Hitchcock. This made them easier to market.
Hack is such a derogatory term, but I think you kind of have to be a hack in order to get your 10,000 hours to become a master craftsman.
You got the Academy rules slightly wrong. Nominations are from their branch (actors nominate actors, directors nominate directors, etc.) But everyone votes for the nominees to determine the winner.
You are absolutely right
He just would have had to put up with more BS down here if he lived that’s probably why he’s as happy as heaven.
That’s an interesting perspective. By the way, are you going to make more episodes of “Space Station”?
@@HamishDownie Thank you for asking and at the moment I have no plans to.
@@HamishDownie I wasn’t thinking about it but since you asked maybe.
I’ve been torn on this race. I think Judy Holiday’s performance was very good and warrants the Oscar nomination. Keep in mind, comedy is (in my opinion) just as hard as dramatic. It’s very difficult to make people laugh and when you can make people laugh and leave an impact on an audience; you’re doing your job well. Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson gave performances that are not only the best in 1950, but iconic in movie history. Both made comebacks that were unheard of and fully believe one of them rightfully deserved the award. As for the other two actresses, Anne Baxter and Elenor Parker, I feel both gave memorable performances and among their most remembered performances of their careers, but they just can’t compete with the performances of Swanson and Davis.
Thank you for your reply! Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis (and Judy Holliday) all had iconic roles (in their careers and for film as a whole). Whereas Ann Baxter’s most iconic role was arguably in “The Ten Commandments”, and Elenor Parker’s was in “The Sound of Music”. I still think “All About Eve” should have gotten an Oscar for Best Ensemble. So, by that logic, we can agree with Joan Crawford in “Feud” and say that Swanson was robbed. Thanks again!
Loved Matti Dillon in Van Zant´s Drug Store Cowboy but I could totally see River nailing that role. Would have been interesting to see him work with David Lynch as well. My Own Private Idaho has so much grace... I enjoyed watching you create your beautiful drawing while pondering River and his career. I´ve enjoyed Leonardo and Christian as well but River really left a void ... a uniqueness and individually, a one of a kind presence. Today I can imagine him taking on complex roles in exceptional television such as True Detective Season 1, Sharp Objects, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Six Feet Under among others. Thank you Hamish. RIP River 1970 - 1993 edit Would love to see any material on David Lynch, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder, Francis Ford Coppola, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright, Lisa Bonet, and Xavier Samuels.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I can see River doing well in all those Peak TV shows. It also would have been interesting to watch him in a David Lynch film. I could see myself making a video on “Inland Empire” as I feel that Laura Dern did possibly the greatest performance of the 21st century in that movie. I did make a video on Robin Williams, and I’m planning on doing one on Health Ledger in the future.
@@HamishDownieYou´re welcome Hamish and Oooh yeah! Would love to watch your take on Inland Empire. Laura is an amazing actress! I´ll keep an eye out :)
Gorgeous❤ she is (not was) the most beautiful woman in the world❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Totally agree with you
Really enjoyed that take, incredibly relaxing watching you draw River as you speak about him. I think you’re spot on about all of it, especially opening the door for others to then take his place. Fascinating to ponder what his career might have been if not for the trauma he faced. He was incredibly philosophical for such a young age. And if that’s not what would have happened, it’s fun to theorize. I particularly enjoy your genuine care for these actors gone too soon. Great vid, Hamish!
Thanks Jayson, I do like to take a Pollyanna view of what might have happened. I'm really glad you've been enjoying them. I've been taking your advice to be more off-the-cuff. The drawing videos seem to do well with audience retention, so I'm going to keep going with them. I feel like I get some insight while I'm drawing. Plus, I can use all that art school training. I'm planning on doing ones on Jean Harlow, Dorothy Dandridge (and her sister Vivian), Health Ledger, and maybe Judy Holliday. I know some subscribers are interested in Barbara Stanwyck, Cary Grant and Shirley MacLaine thanks to some polls I did. I'm still figuring out what I can do that's unique to celebrate the stars who have had full careers. Thanks again for taking time out to watch my videos. It's always an honor.
@@HamishDownie that sounds awesome! 👏🏾 😎 Looking forward to it.
I love Separate Tables! Deborah Kerr is one of my favorite actresses. I used to wish I could marry her when I first saw her as a teen in the 1980s. Try her in Tea and Sympathy if you haven't seen it yet. A 1950s gay movie that isn't gay.
It's a brilliant film, but I just don't think they knew enough about people like David Niven's character at the time, so hasn't aged well. I definitely want to check out "Tea and Sympathy"
