Hi Christian and thank you for your comment. I'm actually quite familiar with Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety. To quote from John Naughton, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Cambridge, "Ashby’s Law was framed in the context of his interest in self-regulating biological systems, but it was rapidly seen as having a relevance for other kinds of systems. The British cybernetician and operational research practitioner Stafford Beer, for example, used it as the basis for his concept of a viable system in organizational design. In colloquial terms Ashby’s Law has come to be understood as a simple proposition: if a system is to be able to deal successfully with the diversity of challenges that its environment produces, then it needs to have a repertoire of responses which is (at least) as nuanced as the problems thrown up by the environment. So a viable system is one that can handle the variability of its environment. Or, as Ashby put it, only variety can absorb variety." My positioning of the "Law" in this five minute video is a simplification for the purpose of framing the activity of leadership within a context that suggests a leader that seeks to be successful at introducing change into a system is well served to have (ideally) more response variability than than the system's inherent and variable default to the status quo.
@@blainebartlett1 Thank you for your long and good answer:-) I think Ashby has been used without understanding "systems" . Something "in" the system can not control "the system" - you need to be "outside". It is of course OFTEN good to have many ways to achieve your goal, but as you talk I get the impression, that the leader tries to "change/manipulate/work" "the system". That makes the leader "outside". I aknowledge that a short presentation has to cut corners and simplify. As I experience the world SOMETIMES it is good to have (behavioral) flexibility, but stubborn people with one agenda ("my way or the highway") can also get things done. I think this way of understanding overlooks many possibilities like: "Flexible on behavior but inflexible on goal" or "few good possibilities indstead of many (flexible but bad) possibilities" etc.
@@cmejerk Hi Christian...thank you for this thoughtful reply. I couldn't agree with you more when you state that something "in" the system can't control the system. Awareness of "the system" requires a meta position and can be thought of in game theory terms as fully appreciating that the essence of any game is contained in its ground rules. Understanding and leveraging the "ground rules" of the system requires one to step outside of the system in order to "grok" what's in play and is an example of variability that, in my experience, often results in a leader being flexible on behavior while also being inflexible on the goal.
LOVE YOU BOTH !!
interesting: ... energy follows attention ...
What's useful about knowing this is the realization that most people have no idea where there attention is being directed, Studies consistently show that up to 95% of behavior is unconsciously driven by where our unexamined attention is being focused.
Gem

Great inaugural episode Blaine. I loved the context you set in the beginning...
Compassionate Capitalism is a journey of the soul to take care of other souls. Consciously be conscious of what you are doing. Compassionate capitalism is a transformation. Transformation is, literally, a forming over, a restructuring. By transformation we speak of transformation of people -- specifically the transformation of one's consciousness. You are keenly aware that you have awareness. In effect this is a new perspective that sees other perspective -- a paradigm shift.
