CHILDHOOD NOSTALGIA: Restoring one of my earliest locomotives - the Hornby Colmans 0-4-0
มุมมอง 128วันที่ผ่านมา
Here, I restore one of my oldest and most cherished locomotives. It is a Hornby 0-4-0 in Colmans mustard livery. It was a present to me from my late grandfather, and I got it in the late 1990s, as a child. This video chronicles fixing a refurbished motor, sorting out wheel quartering issues, a clean-up, and some cosmetic enhancements. Intro and outro music: Mehroon Wahab @mehroonwahab Logo desi...

      Yeah it's quite a rare find. Hornby only made it in 1984 and 1985 as part of the Pick-Up Goods set. they never sold it separately. Thanks to my granddad finding it second-hand in the late 1990s that I got my hands on it. Really glad that I was able to get it back up and running.

    I think adding two tyre weights at the ends of that coach will give better traction. Being a small coach, it seems pretty light.

    • @ashraaqwahab
      @ashraaqwahab 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've added tyre weights beneath it, albeit at the center because there isn't enough room to fit them between the axles. Also the coach has no interior so if I install them inside, they'll be visible through the clear windows. In fact that's another gripe of mine about this coach. Must find a second-hand coach with a damaged bodyshell that I can cannibalize for an interior.

      Sadly I don't have a video on editing videos. I use Da Vinci Resolve for my videos, but I've found Microsoft Clipchamp to also be quite useful. Since the P100 outputs video files in regular .MOV format, you can use it with ClipChamp.

      To be honest I'm not quite sure. Some Googling shows that the 4500 has the pulsation bezel, while the 4559 seems to have a compass bezel. Otherwise they look pretty similar to me. Perhaps this is the main difference. I could be wrong, though.

    Checking a motor would you not use use the Ohms range, not continuity setting those motors should not be showing 40 ohms resistance most motor windings resistance is around 11.3 ohms in my experience

    • @ashraaqwahab
      @ashraaqwahab หลายเดือนก่อน

      For some meters, yes. However funnily enough, my digital meter shows the resistance readout in continuity mode so I've been using that. Just went and checked it again with a 1K resistor to verify (in continuity mode) and it showed 997 ohms. On that token, I guess the 40 ohms for the motor should be reasonably accurate - but given that it's significantly above what should be expected, I need to do some diagnosis on the model. I've always noticed that it runs well, but needs a fair bit of "throttle" - usually around 70% minimum on my Gaugemaster. Perhaps this is the reason, do you think?

    Nice video. You may want to invest in some form of tripod or something like that for your camera as the "jerkiness" makes it hard to see what is really going on. :) They also make "standard" gauges for almost any scale that allows you to check wheel gage, track gage, coupler height, etc.

    • @ashraaqwahab
      @ashraaqwahab 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks David. I have a proper camera tripod but the restricted space within my layout's central well (since it's a 6x7 with a central well) makes it hard to deploy fully. I should look into a monopod which will take much less space.

    Hi Ashraaq, I was interested in the wiring of the LED and Resistors on the strip board. So my question. Is the board isolated between the holes. Is it possible for a close up of the strip board rear for me to see. I have a few strip boards and found it ideal, after watching your video, to use a piece of strip board. Thanks once again for your review.

    • @ashraaqwahab
      @ashraaqwahab 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I'll send you a photo of the strip board I use. The rows of holes are connected in a strip of copper, with isolation between the adjacent rows. So, if you were to place an LED with the positive leg in one row and the negative leg in another row, it will work when you apply power in one direction. Then, when you attach another LED in the opposite direction, that one will light up when you reverse the polarity of the power supply. It is also possible to buy a form of board where each hole is totally isolated, with only a ring of copper surrounding it, to aid soldering. This board allows you to totally make your own connections vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, with solder bridges and bridge wires, but for this application, it's a bit overkill.

    Did you ever figure out how to connect the trailer to the cab? It should just be a "pin" that sits in a "hole" sized to receive it. You are correct in that those folding wheels are for when the trailer is not connected to the cab and they should be retraced (folded up) when it is connected.

    • @ashraaqwahab

      Yeah I did. There's a pin and two openings, but the whole thing is so loose and uncertain that you can't even be sure if it's fitted correctly. Even if you lift it up, you've got to hold the cab and trailer in each hand, or else they just slip out. And if you try pushing it along a level surface, they sometimes disconnect. Strictly a static model, this one.

      Yeah thats Indian Rupees. I live in Sri Lanka and bought this in Sri Lankan Rupees, which, at the time of purchase, was around 4 LKR to 1 INR. Now the rate has dropped to approx. 3.7 LKR to 1 INR

    Does it support multipoint connection

      @ashraaqwahab 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No it doesn't appear to support that for multiple phones. However it claims that you can connect multiple Anker speakers to the same phone when the Soundcore app is installed.

    Must check my Wifi ADSL frequency with the wire kess mouse i am using. I learnt tat from your video. Thanks.

      Thanks! It's indeed a weird thing, and annoyingly, happens when you're using a lot of bandwidth. So you could be watching a video and find the mouse lagging. Then, you'll find it normally working during regular web browsing that doesn't use much bandwidth. Of course, none of this with a wired mouse, or one that doesn't operate on a frequency that's too close to your WiFi's frequency.

    Hi Ashraaq, This is from 1979 ish (you can find dates for models by entering R352 to the hornby railways collector guide) From what you've said I would have used some spirits (lighter fluid) to clean the commutator and the slots. Also lubricating the two ends of the armature shaft. Not too much as the oil dripping down onto the contacts will make a horrible burning smell. Ringfields generally can't lose magnetism as the ring magnet acts as its own keep. 99% of the time they can be rescued, so if you want to fully strip down the motor and have a go at restoring it yourself, go to @00Bill His videos will really help. I have begun to really dislike the abundance of the CD motor. As a beginner I did this and is has not got the power of original ringfields. I have one of these as original which i thoroughly cleaned and it pulled 16 coaches with no real issues!! I would recommend grease on the gears. New brushes too as the old ones can become easily worn and fill the slots in the commutator, shorting and overheating the armature. The gear noise can be solved by removing any flash on gears too. I hope this helps, perhaps you might refit the old motor? If you polish up the contacts it will be a great runner! Best wishes from England Will
