@@drjeffmayfield Forty-five years ago when I experienced a conversion, the awareness of God's love especially in my weaknesses (even sin) was dominate. I lost that and it is a long story that still is unclear to me. Ortlund's book is wonderful to me because I see the truth again which had become so clouded. I often ask The Lord to restore that sense of Divine Love, but for now it seems I have to simply have faith....that is not so easy at times. Reading scripture (videos like yours and books like Ortlund's too) gives me reassurance, but I still struggle. Let's face it: Time is getting short.

Jeff, I finished Ortlund's book a few moments ago. What an incredible book. I drank that book about as slow as a human being could. Near the end, though, I was in a sprint. Thank you again for bringing this book to my attention. Forty-five years ago I had a powerful conversion that strongly resembled in spirit the theme of Ortlund's book; however, I lost that belief and that is too long of a story. I was amazed to read again the same wonderful truths that I experienced so long ago. Truth is wonderful.

@@drjeffmayfield I have been viewing several of your videos. You have a gift for articulating things in a practical yet meaningful way. FYI: I will be 70 in less than 3 months, and I have been a believer (Catholic tradition) since in my early 20's. But for the most part it has been a struggle. Young believers, IMO, are prone to think that conversion means life is going to be a lot easier - I have come to the conclusion that is not the case. About 4 years ago I went through a crisis precipitated by other Catholic believers; and I found myself not questioning my belief, but questioning the foundation of my belief. I started to read and study scripture voraciously at times, and indeed I found that my faith in Christ was not well-formed. Beyond a shallow acceptance, I basically knew very little - almost next to nothing - about Christ's atonement. Once that hurdle was fundamentally made, I started to study much more. I cannot really say that the "crisis" per se is over, because I lost my best friend (friends since infancy) to "his faith" which is too long to explain. Nevertheless, I find myself questioning "why" God allowed this to happen. I just got done reading Psalm 18 and readings like that give me a lot of comfort. Finally, I find your videos much like Psalm 18 - they make sense and bring light into my corner. Thank you.

@@ronaldkulas5748 The longer we live, the more we know the struggle to walk in faithfulness to the Lord. It sounds like the Lord has been faithful to you through it all and is using the hard times to help you depend on him more and grow closer to him. What a blessing! Thank you for encouraging me with this testimony of God's faithfulness.

@@drjeffmayfield I have often entertained the notion that the Lord needs us to fail. Like you wrote: " using the hard times to help you depend on him more...." I often think this is God's norm, but obviously not ours. IMO, Catholicism is mostly about overcoming sin through will power (I am sure it plays a role, but not as much as we think), and now as I turn 70 I think over coming sin is God's business. Again, thanks!

@@ronaldkulas5748 Yes, I wholeheartedly agree: overcoming sin is God's business. He overcame it in Christ on the cross once for all, and by the power of the indwelling Spirit in us, we are enabled to overcome sin (Romans 8:13).
