Learning Bass to Clampdown by The Clash
Here I go through how I am learning this bass line for a new covers/tribute project that I'm working on that will entail learning 15 numbers by The Clash.
This bass line, played by Paul Simonon is pretty straightforward and a great introduction to his playing.
If you are interested in seeing other bass lines from The Clash let me know.
This video uses clips from the song in order to educate.

This was recorded at Arrow Studio's. Whilst it was never officially released at the time, copies managed to get into the wild, even after Joy Division bought back the master tapes. From the beginnig an Ah500x with first 2x then 4x 1048 speakers. I believe he also had a special 8x10” trace combo in the beginning. I think he had most series amps up to SMX range via special built preamps like Mp11 and tube modded Series 6 which later became silver faced valve series stuff.

Hi Paul, I find your videos about Trace Elliot very interesting and like them very much, thanks for them. I like the brand Trace Elliot very much as a ( 77 years old already) experienced bassguitar player. In 1997 i had my first Trace 300 Watt combo to be completed with an additional cabinet 4X10. Lateron in 2006 i replaced the combo for the AH 500 7 new amp head , which I've been using it since. For larger venues I take my 4x10 together with a 1x 15 cabinet. Trace Elliot for me proves to be very reilable.

Ciao Paul, the most probable reason why you haven't seen Series6 AH600X in catalogs is that it overlapped with early GP12 AH600SMX - of which I own one, assembled in October '92, I am not 100% sure if my unit is pre- or already production - which is as well a good-sounding beast. My Series6 is a single channel AH300, which I of course like as well. However, the power amp boards between the late Series 6 and the early SMX seem to be interchangeable, if not the same based on manufacture date, but the positioning definitely isn't. Clive obviously has changed airflow between the Series 6 and the SMX for the better (lateral instead of dorsal) and therefore positioning and connecting of the boards is completely different.

Hi Paul just found your channel I'm a 2nd Year Music and Sound Recording student, on my course we also do Electronics! This summer I found a Trace Elliot Series 6 GP7 discarded with some trash on the side of the road (at 5am on my way back from a games night). We took it back and its pretty functional! Obviously very dusty, there was lots of crackling on the pot too so I'm planning on taking it apart, hopefully give it a good cleaning, TH-cam has been very helpful with videos such as these. Was wondering if you have any words of advice, or suggestions for mods, I'm very new to this but I'm hoping to learn a lot and hopefully not kill it!

Paul, ive a 1996 GP12 SMX AH250. Its been used mainly as a pampered home amp or emergency backup. I began to get an issue with the main power leads to the circuit board. The fan would fire up but nothing else. Most amp "engineers" would jiggle the connection and give it a dose of switch cleaner and smile as I drove away. It was the sat at home in what were not ideal situations (damp) It now pops when I apply stand-by. The longer use the bigger the pop. I've read a resistor between the standby switch will cure it I just dont have a circuit diagram. If you know anything on this and could enlighten me I would be extremely grateful. I realise it's not possible or viable to reply to every comment and/or query. Hope you can help in anyway. Mark

HI, thats probably a bit beyond my expertise (at least without being in front of it). I do have a couple of mine that would pop or bang on power off - I was always told it was to do with the smoothing caps,- on one I swapped the power amp and the problem went away so very possible it was something on the power amp board. Your best bet is to find a tech who loves these old trace elliots (there are a few around in the UK - much rarer to find over here in Aus. Of course even the fellas at Ashdown may help. Good luck with it.

Great video. I was given the 130 model in the combo because of that buzz that was intermittent when I slapped it. I opened it up by sliding it out. I believe the common ground from the front control panel. Preamp circuitry, power stage and output transformer are all joined by bolting to the chassis, which was corroded. I solved the problem by unbolting all the components, cleaning and wire brushing the mounts and the amplifier sounds clean. My opinion about the combo is it sucks. No matter how nice the preamp is, the 15 inch speaker is in too small of a box. The frequency rolloff is much higher than the fundamental of the E string and forget about the B string of a five string bass. I played the amplifier through my acme bottom and it sounds fantastic. Problem with this amp is it has only 130 watts, not enough headroom for modern smaller but less efficient cabinets. I think I might take the power amp out and replace it with a 800 watt class D amp. A proper driver, 12 or 10 inch, can be put into the combo and extend the low frequency. Horror story: I fried out my GenzBenz amp with a loose circuit board in a bass guitar that fed 4 volts into the input. Before I isolated the problem, I fried an Ampeg SVT pro! I've never burned out an amplifier in 45 years, two in one week. I've slid the Trace Elliott amp out of the combo, hooked it up to my 2-10 and it sounds wonderful. I've repaired the bass that fried the amps, but I will temporarily use it plugged into a vox headphone amp till I know it's repaired. I might try to plug the line out of the Trace Elliott into a power amp to see how that sounds. This amp sounds just as transparent as my GenzBenz or Ampeg. I've had a Peavey amp that was rugged but sounded colored.

Paul, I have a GP12 500. built in UK in 1999. I believe that was the last year they were made in the UK. It is an absolute beast and I've just had it repaired by a tech. After which, it fried and blew up the previous speaker I had for it. A vintage Electro Voice 15". I was devastated, because it had just been repaired after being idle for about 7 years. My band mate is a wiz with amps and I should have given it to him in the first place. He replaced one speaker output connector, a thermostat and re glued the input wire plug to the board to stop it disconnecting. With no speaker left, I grabbed a Peavy VB-410 800w cab and it is a beast. I am so happy with the sound this thing has, and it's sound versatility. I'm back in love with it, you can't beat it. On the oscilloscope it STARTS at 500w, and each stage switched in only adds wattage, so the eq, valve-pre, compression all increases the wattage, unless I dial cut into the eq stage, which is how I now grab a shape, for safety. After all that, yes, I have a different model, and I have only ever seen one other, and it was for sale on eBay.

Sounds like a monster! Definitely must have been one of the last of those original made in the UK Trace's. I managed to get one of these in metallic red. Absolute BEAST of a bass. definitely gonna try and get a hold of an SBV-550 or SBV-800MF next... Maybe in the distant future attempt to get one of the exceedingly rare SBV-J2 basses as well... but they go for stupid money owing to them being a limited 100 unit run so that's not super likely - Although number 39/100 is up for sale on eBay at the moment... To say that it's tempting to try is an understatement. Oh, on the manufacturing years - if I recall they were produced for 6 years - 2000 to 2006. The serial numbers can be a tiny bit confusing though because Yamaha recycle their serials once every 10 years. The serial on mine is QP18069 Q implies 1990 or 2000 P is the month September 18 - the day of production 069 - is the batch number form that day. So my bass would be 18th September 2000, number 69 (nice) off the line on that day.

Unfortunately, you can't find much information about the brand and the products on the net today. I myself played an AH500 in the 80s (the one with the black light tube). Recently I bought another Trace, an AH500-12 GP12, serial number TO66/190/29 in top condition. I actually started to try and document them a few years (I know that's pretty sad, isn't it?) but I just kept finding more and more! Given the old company is long gone, you are right, not a lot of info out there, although some of the people are still around and pop up on the internet from time to time. It would be great if one of them wrote a book!!

Great sounding amps playing through mine yesterday! Still good by today’s standards and more heft imo than similar rated modern amps !

I’m looking to get the Transit B as a rig replacement. I can bring my own 1000W monitor to any gig, so I hope that would eliminate complaints from sound techs 😊

I have one of these too. The original pickup died so I replaced it with a Nordstrand NP4. The new pickup is a little too modern sounding for me so I'm looking for a replacement. The neck feels amazing though. My dad bought for $50 in 1996. Everytime I play it out I get offers for it. It was my first bass and my dad gave it to me when I was 12 so there is no way I could let it go.

Yes they are great - I bought mine in about 92 and its a keeper, no way I'll ever sell it. I expect one of my children will inherit it one day..

Hello Paul, I have a GP12 250 watt RMS amp, but I only use it as a preamp at my home studio. I can replace it by bying a GP12 SMX Pre-amp or a GP 12 XV Pre-amp. I look forward to your advice. All best, Geert (Belgium)..

      @Paul-Green-Bass 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well you could but I'd be inclined to keep it to have the option. I also know someone that took the power section out and replaced the transformer with a lighter one, but that would take a little wiring. But if you are definite you only want a pre-amp you could get one of those, I expect prices would be similar though. I use the Transit B, that pretty close in sound and nice, modern and compact.

Hi. I bought a GP7SM 130 combo used from 94. I did a re-cap on it and it sounds great! but the fuse that came with it it's a 3A rated fuse and in the back of the amp it's writen 1A for 230V (i'm in Europe btw). I noticed that your amp says 3A for 230V, so should it be fine with a 3A fuse or should i put a 1A on it? Thanks for the video! Cheers!

I'd would always go with the manufacturers recommendation but if unsure take it to a tech - especially if history unknown.

A standard Philips head of the right size should be fine, but if you've not done DIY before it may be worth enlisting the help of a professional.
