I came across this video accidentally and clicked on it because I’m a queer guy named Romy. I’m glad I did, because it was very sweet to listen to this meeting of two lovely, bright, and quiet souls. I shed a couple tears at the reminder that grief is an inescapable part of our human existence but also, very significantly, it’s not the entirety of our existence. And it occurred to me that, while I haven’t had to grieve a parent, for many years I haven’t been fully understanding that my heart has been trying to grieve for me, for the emotional experiences I had 15-20 years ago as a queer adolescent, for the disconnection from authentic self and from love. And Cormac, when you mentioned having depression and later that you often wake up in a headspace that isn’t great, I felt a wave of emotion, like…”but I love him.” I love us, and I don’t want us to suffer. But then came a whisper in my mind of, “Loving someone means loving them exactly as they are. It means respecting and honoring their experience, even if that experience is depression, without needing it to be different.” And that goes for loving myself too. I also loved hearing you speak vulnerably about your history, and I’m grateful to Romy for wondering about you and asking about you even though she was the one being interviewed. Essentially, I was here for the emotions but I stayed for the music, because I gave Romy’s album a listen afterward and I fucking love it so much. I was moved to tears more than once, and the sound is amazing. I think my boyfriend will love it too. I’m starting my second listen now because it’s that good. Thank you for putting this out there. Nice to get to know you two, I love you both. ❤
