From Soft Voices to Loud Hearts: Fort McDowell Winter Round Dance 2024
Another Fort McDowell Round Dance is in the books! This was my second time attending and documenting this event, and it’s inspiring to see how much growth I’ve made as a videographer over the past year when I compare my footage.
This round dance was organized by the Fort McDowell Youth Council, an incredible group of young leaders who take on responsibilities like planning events, collaborating with tribal elders and leaders, and preparing for college and career opportunities-all while serving their Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation community.
Parking was limited, but both admission and parking were free. Doors opened at 7pm, with singing starting around 7:30pm. About an hour into the event, the Youth Council provided a free meal for everyone-a thoughtful touch that added to the sense of community. Dinner included a turkey or ham sandwich, chips, an orange, and a choice of soda or water. Even though I’d already eaten, it was great to see the effort they put into feeding everyone.
The event took place in the basketball gym, with carpets laid out to create a central space for dancing. Four long tables were pushed together for the singers, seating 32 of them with their hand drums. Attendees could sit in the bleachers or bring their own camp chairs for a closer view.
A highlight of the round dance was Nathan Little Child Sr., who served as the stickman. His role was to guide the event by distributing sticks to the invited singers. Here’s how it worked: Nathan picked up five or six sticks from the table and handed them to one of the invited singers to lead a set of four songs. Each set begins with the lead singer performing the first song and leading the opening verses of the next three. For the remaining songs in the set, the lead singer could pass the lead to other singers, creating a sense of collaboration and teamwork.
Round dances vary in the number of invited singers, ranging from as few as five to as many as twenty, depending on the event organizers. This collaborative and communal process adds structure while celebrating the shared joy of singing and dancing. One of my favorite moments was hearing the singers softly undersing as they learned the next song-it was a beautiful backdrop to the MC’s announcements and added to the overall atmosphere.
This year’s round dance was a huge success. Experiencing these events through my camera always leaves me feeling grateful, and I could tell that everyone had a fantastic time. A big thank you to everyone who made this night possible-I’m already looking forward to next year!
P.S. I entered a raffle and won a pink ribbon skirt-perfect timing for a Christmas gift for my wife 🥰

Flagstaff High School's Navajo Shoe Game Showdown!
มุมมอง 4.1K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After a disappointing visit to the 2nd Annual Lake Havasu Pow Wow, I found myself unexpectedly drawn to the Shoe Game at Flagstaff High School. It turned out to be an unforgettable experience! The Lake Havasu Pow Wow faced challenges again this year, with only 8 dancers and one drum present. After a quick stop there, I made a 3-hour drive to Flagstaff to check out the Navajo Shoe Game. I'm so g...

Parker's CRIT Pow Wow Captures the HEART of Indigenous Resilience
มุมมอง 2.7K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
The Colorado River Indian Tribe (CRIT) Pow Wow in Parker, Arizona, is a lively and fun event, but there are definitely areas where things could improve-many of which could be addressed with a more detailed flyer. The current flyer only included the name, date, and location, which left out key scheduling details. When my mom and I arrived at the pow wow, we expected gourd dancing to be from 11am...

Hello everyone! Aaron here, your favorite Indigenous videographer, aye! Just a heads-up, I’m on a personal trip this weekend and won’t be attending any pow wows until the CRIT Parker AZ Pow Wow on Saturday. In the meantime, here's a highlight from the Red Mountain Eagle Pow Wow! Right after Grand Entry, we had the royalty introductions, followed by intertribal dances. During the intertribals, e...
Indie Rock Night: The Zoniez at Crescent Ballroom

I found out that The Zoniez were performing at Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix, so I grabbed my gear and headed out! Crescent Ballroom hosts a weekly event called "Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday!" where local and emerging artists get a chance to showcase their talent on the patio stage. Security initially thought I was there for the main concert room and almost turned me away since I didn'...
Passing the Crown: Miss San Carlos Apache Tribe Veterans Pow Wow Princess 2024

I just discovered there are actually two pow wows each year in San Carlos, Arizona! The larger event is the Apache Gold Casino Pow Wow in March, and the other is the San Carlos Apache Tribe Veterans Pow Wow in November. Although I planned to record Sunday's pow wow, I spent the entire weekend comparing this event to March’s huge turnout, which featured numerous drum groups and even a spotlight ...
Dancing in the Cold: San Carlos Apache Pow Wow's Grand Entry

After spending the afternoon at the ASU West Pow Wow, my mom and I headed to the San Carlos Apache Gold Casino Pow Wow! I already knew it was going to be cold and, unfortunately, I left my warm jackets at home since I didn’t plan for the change in locations. I layered up with my packable puffer, wind jacket, scarf, and gloves to prepare for the chilly night ahead. We arrived just in time for Gr...

ASU West Pow Wow 2024! Every time I head out with my cameras, I learn something new. My mom and I decided to leave this pow wow at the dinner break to head over to the San Carlos Apache Gold Casino Pow Wow, expecting a huge event. It was outside and really cold, and the evening session was only about two hours before it ended. I should have stayed and recorded the entire evening session at ASU ...
