Nature's Classroom: A Day in Nyungwe
EDEN Primary School students embarked on an extraordinary journey to Nyungwe National Park. They marveled at the breathtaking Ndambarare Waterfall, strolled through serene tea plantations, and gained valuable insights into the park's significance for Rwanda's economy and local communities. This incredible experience was made possible through a collaborative effort between EDEN primary school, the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB), Lessons in Conservation and African Parks.

Recent studies on tropical tree phenology (e.g. the timing of life events such as flowering and fruiting in trees) show that climate and phenology are inextricably linked, highlighting the importance of studying phenological patterns as a key indicator of climate change. Studying these phenology patterns is not only important for understanding climate-plant relationships, but also to understand...

CoEB SEMINAR SERIES ON AQUACULTURE AND THE GLOBAL WARMING: METHANE EMISSIONS FROM CARP PONDS
มุมมอง 125 หลายเดือนก่อน
Manuring and supplementary feeding are common practices used to sustain high fish production in temperate semi-intensive carp ponds. However, the low use efficiency of added nutrients and organic matter may cause carp ponds to be ‘hotspots’ of methane (CH4) production and emission. Surface CH4 concentrations were measured and diffusive CH4 flux was estimated using a wind- based transboundary la...

Local perceptions of forest ecosystem services and useful trees in western Rwanda by Bulonvu F.

Ecosystem services are those processes and functions that benefit people, consciously or un consciously, directly or indirectly. They only exist if they contribute to human wellbeing and cannot be defined independently. Tropical forests play a considerable role in the livelihoods of the rural poor through their provision of food, water, medicines, fibres and other products. Local people, often ...

Seminar session on Tropical tree hydraulics in a changing climate
มุมมอง 288 หลายเดือนก่อน
Tropical rainforests are key ecosystems for livelihoods, carbon storage and biodiversity. They are adapted to a relatively moist and thermally stable climate and are therefore suggested to be particularly vulnerable to climate change. Unusually warm and dry conditions during recent decades have caused shifts in tree community composition and declines in forest carbon sink. These negative effect...

Forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) are an understudied species, largely due to their elusive nature and dense habitat, which are facing increasing pressure from poaching. Though Gabon has a relatively high abundance of elephants for the region, there has been a rampant increase in poaching pressure in recent years, with some areas declining by as much as 80% over a 10-year period. The Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approach is often applied in restoration projects as a solution to increase resilience to climate change. In Rwanda, the EbA approach has been applied to restore degraded ecosystems using agroforestry, fruit trees, indigenous tree species and other approaches. However, there is lack of demonstrable evidence of EbA approaches in delivering ecosystem services ...
