The home had to be able to expand and subtract, accommodating the client on her own as well as being large enough for a visiting family.

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.

Yes all personal taste, but i dont think we have an obsession with exposed concrete. The only visible concrete is in the tubes, and they were chosen because they could be placed inside and out, to help break down the edge of the building. The material treatments are simple; let wood be wood, let brick be brick, steel be steel and concrete be concrete. Each of these materials have their own qualities... I do tend to agree with you that concrete is over used, especially when it is chosen wholely as a decorative finish, but i dont think this is the case here... A big positive is that there is barely any paint in the house, so far less maintenance.

There are actual client requirement, and then there should be room for the architect to achieve those requirements while accessing all their skill and experience to meet those requirements in the best possible way. This results in far better outcomes than if a client just tells an architect how to do their job. That would be a waste of expertise, and a lost opportunity.
