Cowboy Coffee
My method for camp coffee is “cowboy coffee”, also known as Kokkaffe, or “boiled coffee” in Sweden This method relies on technique, not fancy coffee gadgets…and the taste is superb. The ritual is good for the soul.
The coffee I used was a light-roast Ethiopian Yirgacheffe varietal coarsely ground at home right before the trip. I like the varietals with fruity tones for this method. The lighter roast allows the natural fruity undertones to shine through. It is not muted by the darker roast. You’ll notice I put five or so heaping spoonfuls of coffee right to the cold water and then bring it to a boil 3 or 4 times, removing it from the heat before it froths over , then returning it to the flame. I give it few shakes and taps on the table to release the surface tension in order for the coffee to settle to the bottom of the kettle, then let it steep for 4 minutes. Finally, I tap the edge of the kettle with a wooden spoon or stick to ensure any stray coffee grounds settle to the bottom. It’s really not necessary, but I like the ritual. It’s also not necessary to strain it in the cup but I wanted to show just how clear the coffee is using this method.
Gear I used in this video:
MSR Titan Kettle, .85L (purchased at REI)
MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe (REI)
Toaks titanium long handle spoon with polished bowl (REI)
GSI mug (REI)
Trekology Aluminum side table, Large (Amazon)

Elastics for braces work well for temporarily securing guides to the blank. Why didn't you grind the guide feet to create a smoother transition for your wraps?
Thank you for this!!
What’s the creek you were fishing?
Your technic IS THE BEST Thanks for the lesson absolutely a rod Builders friend u Are .....Thanks
Awesome video
What do you use for your pull through loop? Looks stiff and easy to use! 👍🏻
That looks like mono to me. To thick in my opinion. I use 30 to 50lb braid and never have a problem even on ultra light builds.
Great work!! Can you share what kind and what thickness silk you use? I really struggle with transparent wraps. Thanks in advance.
😄👍👍👍
I have a question. cut off the excess after the first layer has dried ? (black thread.)
Hey thanks for the question. Yes, with the tipping (black thread), after that first coat has cured, I trim off the tag ends. I generally haven't had any problems. I have had to rewrap the tipping once but it wasn't a big deal. I know there are builders who probably are more skilled and can trim as they wrap without the first coat acting as an adhesive, but this is my workflow and for me it's effective and stress free. Good luck!
@@waywardangler8318 Many thanks for the answer. Want to build my first rod so the videos help a lot. How long should it dry before the second layer?
lentoooo
Instead of the color preserver could you put a dab of crazy glue? Thanks
I’ve heard of builders using that. I have not tried it.
I was taught that using a dab of Hard As Nails (nail polish hardener) works great to hold your wraps in place, and it does not darken the color of the thread that much. Make sure you get the version of Hard As Nails with Nylon. You can get it at any pharmacy.
Really wish you had included the final step. Went over to the alignment dot video, doesn't show it either. So this just shows you how to wet sand a wrap and that's it. Scared to death to apply a layer of finish over that... won't it amplify the scratches, or does it cover it up?
Great tips
Great video, I’ve read a few books but it’s nice to see someone do the wraps and confirm my technique.
Excellent 😊 Perhaps I should've asked this earlier, but now that Dale Clemens Stores aren't in business, Can you Please give me the source for the Chuck on your Wrapper?? Thank you so much
Thanks for the comment! I'm running this one www.anglersworkshop.com/Batson-Wrappers-Dryers/ALPS-Wrap-Machine-Chuck-Upgrade
Nice presentation. Suggest you look at my book for making a "continuous" wrap instead of 2 separate thread wraps. It is a lot easier and you will have fewer "tags" to deal with. L. A. Garcia, author, "Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod".
Best video available for definition AND options. Great clarity!! Keep them coming!
Jeez...what are you using, baling twine?
It's Prowrap thread in bright colors on a scrap blank I use to teach rod building - easier to see the technique - actually the point of the video. I use silk on my glass rods I build and split cane rods I make.
Nice video! Look forward to seeing you again!
Awesome trip, love my opinel knife that was my dad's, take it on every trip, mostly in the MNF
I’m glad I rescued it from the junk drawer and cleaned it up! Great steak knife to. It’s so light
Awesome thanks for sharing. How do you, or how do others do the small black line, or black single wrap in the middle of the clear silk thread?
That's a great question and thanks for asking. On those clear silk thread wraps, it's done by coloring a section of the thread with india ink. It will stay that color while the rest of the wrap goes transparent when applying the finish. I hope that helps.
Absolutely my favorite way to smooth out my finish now, thanks for the video
Hi,I'm really enjoying these tutorials, they've helped me a lot,but how do you heat your room without puting dust on the wraps? Thanks for the vids!
How do you keep the treads from crossing over each other?
Great question, Bobby. Just give it a little slack and the threads will separate, and then slowly snug them up by pulling on the tag ends
This is the best trim band set up I have ever tried. Works great.
Thank you, John. I'm glad this worked for you. The technique is very useful when you are going for transparent wraps and you don't want the tag ends of the tipping to show through the main wraps, not that it is bad thing to see the tags. Sometimes, it's a cool effect.
Just tied this with a natural and black dyed also
Nick, I haven't tried the black yet, but I think Chris Sparkman has successfully.
HI, if you use the colour preserver where the trim band threads cross, do you need to make sure none gets on the main silk wraps? Would it affect transparency?
Hi Chris. In this video I am showing how to use color preserver with nylon or poly thread. When I am using silk and going for transparency, I do one coat on the main thread, and then come back after with the trim bands, or just do before the first coat, but leave the tags long to make adjustments while the thread is still wet. @@stephenchristopherson9707 thank you Stephen! I’m doing a 686 as well, haven’t done a glass rod before. And yes I’ve watched your 5 part series. Now I get it and thank you for the clarification, most helpful. I’ll do a practice wrap to be sure!! Thx Chris
None of those wraps are going to be transparent, he is practically using rope.
Hello watching all the videos, did you add 1cc of alcohol to the epoxy? If so and why...do you do this to all your epoxy wraps..Roy
Roy, only with silk wraps when I am going for a transparent result...and only with the initial coat. Transparent silk wraps requires thorough saturation. The alcohol thins the epoxy enough to do that.
@@waywardangler8318 thank you for that...
Nice fly 🇺🇸
Nice job
You never did.the video showing what it looks like after the second coat
Thanks Austin. I don't do a second coat. Next coat after the dots is a coat of epoxy rod finish.
@@waywardangler8318 that's what I was talking about. You said in the part two to go to part three for the second coat of thread wrap finish. Was wanting to see how it came out sanding it down like that.
Oh boy that was a long time ago. You are correct. so the clip at the beginning is the final product after. I do have some other clips from the 626 build that shows the same process of final coat. It's pretty uneventful. the final coat after the sanding is a very thin "skim" and all the dull sanded finish turns glassy. Thanks for keeping me honest. I think I got better in the later videos...I hope

Can you use Acetone or paint thinner instead of DNA?
I’ve only ever used DNA, non toxic and effective
You can use Acetone or paint thinner but no more than 10% according to my research. I have zero experience with either though.
Then degrease well before epoxy second coat after the finger touching ...
Thank you for this video. I've been considering this rod, and was happy to hear your take on it. I also enjoyed your footage of Seneca Creek. I'm slightly south of you, and love fishing in my portion of the Appalachian backcountry.
Thank you for the kind words. There’s some good water out there!
Hi Where did you purchase the yellow o'rings on your rod support? Thanks
You can try Anglers Workshop. They should be an accessory to the custom wrappers they sell. If you don't see it on their website, contact them directly. They are very helpful.
@@waywardangler8318 I was hoping you know where to purchase directly from the company. At Angler's Workshop saling them kinda expensive.
The elastic cord was a great tip that I’m going to try. Thank you for a great video
Hi Stephen Thank you ever so much for these tutorials, they're truly informative. I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit about how you do the inscription on the rod? Do you treat the finished inscription in any way, for example with a coat of epoxy? Or is the acrylic ink indistructable after it has dried?
Thank you for the feedback and kind words. The acrylic ink by itself will not hold up without some sort of top coat. I sometimes use epoxy rod finish, however most of the time I opt for several (3-4) thin coats of a wipe-on poly such as Minwax in gloss. I show the can at 4:50 minutes into the video. I apply it with my finger - I wear a glove. in this case I established the edge with tape and with each additional coat, I move the tape a bit further up the blank to "feather" the finish. Just don't use any finish with alcohol or other solvents that might dissolve the acrylic. Uncut epoxy and polyurethane will not.
Thank you very much for the reply Stephen. I’m expecting an Epic 486 blank next month. I will be watching this series of videos and reading your blog thoroughly. I hope it’s ok if I throw a couple of questions your way during the build. Kind regards from Iceland Eidur
