Create a Fall Garden Urn in a Few Simple Steps
I was thinking you could use a leaf blower and blow the leaves out in the spring of the chicken wire set up.
What kind of glue?
Hi Judy, my first time watching one of your videos and find it very informative. I am in zone 6b, and it is early November but some of my roses old hybrid teas mostly are still budding. We are having some mid 60’s/50’s weather mixed with cool nights, a couple in the low 40’s with no real frost yet but I know it’s around the corner. Should I wait to winter prune or go ahead and do it now? Also, I am concerned about piling compost or mulch into the center. My roses are all grafted just above ground. There is so much controversy about covering that graft. I usually just apply a couple inch layer of pine bark mulch but never cover the graft, however I have at times experienced some winter kill. Should I be following your advice to pile the compost into the middle of the plant or doing something else? Also, I planted my first climber early this Fall and have no idea how to winterize it. It’s still holding all it’s green leaves and canes. Do you have any suggestions or videos on how to winterize those? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Grace, Our midwest weather is very tricky. I would winter prune in mid November even if the temps. aren't freezing. The cooler temps. should keep the rose from putting out new growth. I strongly recommend covering your graft with compost or mulch in our zone. If you put a minimum of 6 inches of mulch or compost on the base of your rose to cover the graft that will protect it. I also recommend planting the graft 1-2 inches below the ground for future rose plantings. I do have a climbing rose winter protection video. If you go to my channel Judy Penner you will find it there under winterizing climbing roses.
@ Thank you so much for all the advice. I don’t want to replant my established rises but wouldvit make sense for me to try and raise the soil level of that bed at some point? I will try to find that climbing rose video because that’s a newbie for me. Much appreciate the quick response.
Glad this helped. No need to raise the soil level on your existing rose bed just winter protect the grays with mulch and compost.
I am glad that I came across this video. I like how you take time to explain in detail every single step in the process, including the cleanup and mulching. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I hope that pruning roses in late November will be good timing for my hardiness zone 6.
Greetings from Calgary Canada. I have a first year City of York climbing rose that I have in a pot that I am preparing for it's first winter. Do you really take off all their leaves before you bundle them up like that? *I am hoping to plant it in the ground next year.
You can take off the leaves with black spot and leave the healthy leaves. I would suggest putting roses in pots it in an unheated garage or shed.
Hi, thanks for the informative video! One part confused me. You say to rake away all the dead leaves because they might harbor disease. Then later, you say that some people enclose their roses with chicken wire and bury their roses in leaves. So are dead leaves good or harmful around winterizing roses?
Removing all the rose leaves is important since black spot spores can overwinter on rose leaves. The leaves I use to winter mulch the roses are from trees so they do not have rose diseases and may be used safely .
What kind of fungicide to you spray with? And at what point do you apply that in the process? Thanks?
Phardon?.. just the introduction needs subtitles to understand what you just said
😂😂😂😂
Nice information
So nice of you
10-20% bleach in water works better than isopropyl alcohol
Will leaves work in place of straw?
Leaves are not as insulating.
What if there is no 5 leaflet leaf and only 2 or 3 sets of 3 leaflets?
If that is the case I would just remove the spent bloom. This will allow the rose to put energy into producing another bud.
Thank you for explaining very well ❤
I’m glad you liked it.
Just what I was looking for! Very simple and to the point. Thank you for showing the diferente types of stems.
I’m glad it helped.
Just came across this video. Thank you for sharing. I came across the suggestion to use Elmers glue for the prune cuts. I am so glad I did! The tip is saving my rose bushes! But there are not many videos about it! Thank you so very much! Great video! Subscribed! ❤
I’m glad it helped!
This short is very valuable !!! Cheers
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing ...cant wait to see the regrowth...thank you for sharing.....
Do you cut or nip before soaking to encourage saturation? What does the bleach do? What about a few drops of Miracle Grow? Do different hybrids do better planting at different times in the springtime? Can you soak muliple roses in the same bucket? Does it matter what the water temp is? Tepid vs cool? Water level in bucket?
I trim the roots and canes before soaking. The entire rose including canes may be submerged in water. You may also put as many roses in a container as long as they are submerged. I use water straight from the tap, I would not use hot water. I hope this helps.
Dang. I lost 4 30 year old roses this winter. I should have done this but they overwinter every year.
If there is any growth at the base of the rose they may make it. This was a tough winter.
In a few seconds of the video called something else, so I was not interested in watching the rest of it then you said it was a rosebush 🥀 humm
I don’t know what kind of plant is
Thank you for your time and knowledge! Your videos are great and are appreciated. Please note the season and zone the rose is in (zone wouldn't change but documentation is useful anyway) somewhere either in the video or in the description. Thanks!
Thank you. I am in zone 6 b and I this was in August.

Nice. Keep going
Thank you.
Please recommend anyone using RoundUp should wear some kind of respirator when dispensing it… Nasty stuff if inhaled… Nice video with a professional feel…
Thought roses can tolerate winter temperatures..:: climbing roses are different ..?
Add a huge red, wired ribbon at the narrow point too. Beautiful
Love these videos!!
So glad!
How far down do you cut a cane? It looks like you are leaving approx. a foot on most.
If the winter has been good I prune the canes to about a foot to a foot and a half.
Should I prune roses in February? Or wait til Spring? I live 45 minutes from the Mississippi Coast and right next to Mobile Alabama area.
My area is colder than yours so I suggest looking at the university websites close to your area. Also a local rose society or garden center should know the best time to prune. Another resource is contacting an extension agent in your area .
I heard you say, “Don’t fill them in right away”. How deep do you put dirt on them and when? Love auger idea on drill!
I fill in the holes all the way to the top. I just leave the holes open while planting so I make sure I have a bulb in each hole.
I have been looking for just your kind of show/tell video! Thank you so very much!! I’m subscribing!!
Thanks for subscribing!
This is wonderful and the perfect thing to watch during a Kansas blizzard! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the simple instructions i was pruning of the dead branches and leaves.
You are welcome!

Is the wood glue you spoke of regular carpenter’s glue?
The bottles of glue that I use are labeled wood glue.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom @judypenner7458! I'm in TN, zone 7a. We have had our first freeze and I am embarrassingly late on preparing my roses for the winter. I'm a newbie... no excuse but my learning curve. It's 12/3 today. Do I still prune and prepare my roses as you've instructed or since it's winter, is there something else I need to do? Also, I have a rose tree, it's doing well right now. How shall I prepare that particular rose? Sorry for all the questions . I would appreciate any advice . Thank you for your time. Have a blessed day.
Don’t worry you can still prune your roses and mulch them. With only one freeze you can mulch anytime this coming week. If the tree rose is in a pot it should be moved to an unheated garage. And watered every other week or as needed. You don’t want them to dry out or get overwatered so just keep an eye on them and check the soil with your hand every other week. If the tree rose is planted in the ground you can dig a trench and bury it a foot below ground level. Hope this helps.
@@judypenner7458 WOW!! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your wealth of knowledge.
Given the height of your compost mulch, do you have any issues with collar rot?
Rebecca in my 37 years of growing roses I have not had a problem with collar rot.
@@judypenner7458 Thank you. I live in Australia in an area with quite a bit of humidity. Do you think that would change things?
I've ordered for Spring. Thanks!
Great!
A quick question, I'm out in Western Kansas. I need to transplant two (3 year old) small Freedom hedge roses to the front part of the border. Do I do that when I would typically prune in the late winter or do I move the bush after frosts, when it's actively growing and after it's been pruned in place?
This is the best video I've ever seen on pruning roses. I have been doing this wrong my entire life. 😂
Glad it was helpful!
What if we don’t want our roses that tall? What height should we make our winter cuts?
Sara the winter cut is mostly to keep the canes from whipping in the wind and cleaning up the rose bed. You can do a shorter cut in the spring. In zone 6 occasionally we have severe winters and the canes turn black leaving only the canes under the mulch pile with life. I will do a spring pruning video next year in the spring. Spring pruning is the best time to control the height of your roses. Hope this helps.
So you recommend trimming them back during the winter? I have many rose bushes and several types and i wasn't sure when i should prune them!
If you go to my channel I have a video on how to winterize your roses it explains how I have been pruning my roses for over 30 years. Please share, like and subscribe!
Yes In the fall/winter I prune to keep canes from whipping in the wind. It also makes spring clean up easier. If the roses are short you may not need to cut back since they will not whip in the wind. If you have ramblers/Climbers or roses that bloom one time per year you do not prune them this time of year.
Thank you for this video. I inherited rose bushes when we moved into our house and and but one are still blooming and the dormant one has one tall stalk and I have been researching and reading and was still confused and scared if killing these beautiful plants. I know what I will be doing on Black Friday. I also have bearded irises and red spider lilies that need to be thinned out and 3 Asian pear trees that need to be pruned. 😂🥰
I have had roses bloom in December before but you can’t go wrong mulching them around Thanksgiving. Just follow my instructions and your roses will be fine.
Ty for this helpful information!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this!
I’m glad you liked it. You’re welcome!
i thought roses a left until early spring to prune??
Pruning the tall canes in the fall reduces the damage harsh winds can cause during the winter.
ok thanks judy. so in early spring you reduce the bush by prunning lower than the 24inches? @@judypenner7458
This was sooooooo helpful! Thank you!
Hi Judy. what grow zone do you live in. I notice that your roses are are about 5 to 6 feet high. I live in grow zone 3 with winters regularly reaching -40 to -50 Celsius, Canadian Prairies. I have never seen roses in our area grow as high as healthy as what you have. Thanks for sharing your rose care ideas.
I am in zone 6.
This is awesome. I was just in KC wondering if you would put out a new video for the Fall. Thanks!
I’m glad you liked the video.
