"The Yellow Rose of Texas"* is a traditional American song dating back to at least the 1850s. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time. Many versions of the song have been recorded, the most popular of which was by Mitch Miller, whose version reached No. 1 in the United States in 1955. Its popularity made it an unofficial state song of Texas (the actual state song is "Texas, Our Texas"). Origin The earliest known version of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is found in Christy's Plantation Melodies. No. 2, a songbook published under the authority of Edwin Pearce Christy in Philadelphia in 1853. Christy was the founder of the blackface minstrel show known as the Christy's Minstrels. The song was uncredited in the songbook, and it had no sheet music. In 1858, someone named J.K. revised the lyrics of the song and added a piano accompaniment to the song. Research in 2010 proposed that J.K. was John Kelly, who used the stage name J.K. Campbell, later J.K. Edward, as a member of the Christy's Minstrels. It is possible that J.K. was the original writer of the song. Like most minstrel songs, the lyrics are written in a cross between a parody of a generic creole dialect historically attributed to negroes and standard American English. The song is written in the first person from the perspective of a coloured singer who refers to himself as a "darkie," longing to return to "a yellow girl" (that is, a light-skinned, or bi-racial woman). In the 1858 revision, J.K changed the lyrics from "yellow girl" to "yellow rose". The following year Napoleon W. Gould added a guitar arrangement to the song. The song became a popular song particularly associated with Texas, and its popularity continued into the 20th century. In 1933, Gene Autry and Jimmie Long made it into a cowboy song with some revisions of the lyrics, for example, replacing "no other darkey knows her, no darkie only me" with "no other fellow knows her, nobody else but me." Roy Rogers performed a version of the song in the 1944 film _The Yellow Rose of Texas._ The lyrics continued to evolve in the 20th century into a song that is racially neutral. A story emerged in the 20th century that "The Yellow Rose of Texas" referred to Emily D. West, who was supposedly involved in the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution. The claim is disputed, but it nevertheless spawned a number of books on the subject. Civil War use of the song The song was popular during the American Civil War in both the North and the South, and several different versions existed, with titles such as "The Gallant Hood of Texas" and "The song of the Texas Ranger". This song became popular among Confederate soldiers in the Texas Brigade; upon taking command of the Army of Tennessee in July 1864, General John Bell Hood introduced it as a marching song. The final verse and chorus were slightly altered by the remains of Hood's force after their crushing defeat at the Battle of Nashville that December: (Last verse) And now I'm going southward, for my heart is full of woe I'm going back to Georgia, to find my Uncle Joe You may talk about your Beauregard and sing of Bobby Lee But the gallant Hood of Texas, he played hell in Tennessee Or alternatively: and now I'm going southward, for my heart is full of woe I'm going back to Georgia to find my 'Uncle Joe.' You may talk about your Beauregard and sing of Gen. Lee, but that gallant Hood of Texas, played Hell in Tennessee. The modified lyrics reference Confederate military commanders Joseph Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Robert E. Lee. Soldiers sang it openly to mock Hood's mishandling of the campaign on Nashville. In this version of the chorus, "soldier" replaced "darkie." The same substitution is made throughout the song. The song was very popular with not only Texan troops but other infantry units in the west such as Louisiana and Arkansas. Mitch Miller's recording In 1955, Don George reworked the song, gave the song a marching beat, and this version appeared in an album of Civil War songs. Mitch Miller came across this version, and recorded the song with an arrangement that includes snare drums. Miller's lyrics have further changes, for example using "little rosebud" for "rose of color". Miller was convinced of the potential of the song, and ordered a pressing of 100,000 copies of the single, with the promise that he would buy back all copies at cost if they did not sell. This recording was released by Columbia in July 1955 in the U.S. The song reached number one hit on the Billboard retail chart on September 5, 1955, knocking Bill Haley & His Comets' "Rock Around The Clock" from the top of Billboard's Best Sellers chart. It stayed top of the chart for six weeks, interrupted by Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing for a week on October 8. Miller's was No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart the same week Giant star James Dean died, and 13 months later, Miller's hit version was used for a key scene in the 1956 Texas-based film Giant that starred James Dean. The song peaked at the No. 1 position in Australia, and in the UK, it reached No. 2. Billboard ranked Miller's version as the No. 3 song of 1955. The song became a gold record in the US, with a million copies sold. Gene Autry and Jimmy Long version Gene Autry first recorded this song on January 27, 1933, at Victor Studios, without supporting musicians. On March 1, he and Jimmy Long recorded the better-known version for American Record Corporation (ARC). This was released in June 1933 on Melotone Records (catalog No. 12700). Perfect and several other dime store labels distributed by ARC. His version started with "There's a yellow rose in Texas, I'm going back to see, no other fellow knows her, nobody else but me." On March 10, Autry filed a copyright not for lyrics, but for his arrangement and melody. Whether the copyright was good is unknown, Gene knew all the tricks of the trade, and he learned how to squeeze every dime out of his creative efforts. He made a small fortune from songwriting and publishing over the years (600 songs), and in 1961 he bought a major league baseball team. The soundtrack to the TV miniseries James A. Michener's Texas dates a version of the song to June 2, 1933, and co-credits both the authorship and performance to Gene Autry and Jimmy Long. Other versions In 1955, Johnny Desmond also released a version around the same time as Mitch Miller. Desmond's version reached No. 6 on the retail chart, and No. 4 on the most played by deejay chart. Stan Freberg also issued a parody version of the song the same year in which the bandleader warred with the snare drummer, Alvin Stoller, who also featured prominently in Miller's arrangement. Dacosta Woltz's Southern Broadcasters, Gennet - 6143 (1927) Dario Moreno Elvis Presley Roy Rogers (1942) Bing Crosby recorded the song in 1955 for use on his radio show and it was subsequently included in the CD So Rare: Treasures from the Crosby Archive (2010) Ronnie Hilton - this reached the No. 15 spot in the UK charts in 1955. Michael Holliday - a single release in 1955. Mantovani (1959) Pat Boone (1961) Hoyt Axton (1991) on "Songs of the Civil War" CD (Columbia) Kidsongs (1997) Waldemar Matuška Willie Nelson. The Yellow Rose In 1984, country music artists Johnny Lee and Lane Brody recorded a song titled "The Yellow Rose," which retained the original melody of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" but with new lyrics, for the title theme to a TV series also titled The Yellow Rose. It was a number one country hit that year. Original lyrics Earliest known 1853 version, from Christy's Plantation Melodies. No. 2: The lyrics have since been modified. There's a yellow girl in Texas That I'm going down to see No other darkies know her No darkey, only me She cried so when I left her That it like to broke my heart, And if I only find her We never more will part [Chorus] She's the sweetest girl of color That this darkey ever knew Her eyes are bright as diamonds And sparkle like the dew You may talk about your Dearest Mae And sing of Rosa Lee But the yellow Rose of Texas Beats the belles of Tennessee Where the Rio Grande is flowing And the starry skies are bright Oh, she walks along the river In the quiet summer night And she thinks if I remember When we parted long ago I promised to come back again And not to leave her so [Chorus] Oh, I'm going now to find her For my heart is full of woe And we'll sing the songs together That we sang so long ago We'll play the banjo gaily And we'll sing our sorrows o'er And the yellow Rose of Texas shall be mine forever more [Chorus] The "Dearest Mae" and "Rosa Lee" referenced in the song are the titles of two other songs also appearing in Christy's Minstrels songbooks. "Dearest Mae" is replaced with "Clementine" in some variant versions of the song.

September 1906 in Sistrans - 8.

She was the second wife of Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. Her compositions include "Struttin' with Some Barbecue", "Don't Jive Me", "Two Deuces", "Knee Drops", "Doin' the Suzie-Q", "Just for a Thrill" (which was a hit when revived by Ray Charles in 1959), "Clip Joint", and "Bad Boy" (a hit for the Jive Bombers in 1957). Armstrong was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Background Lil's grandmother, Priscilla Martin, was a former slave from near Oxford, Mississippi. Martin had a son and three daughters, one of whom was Dempsey, Lil's mother. Priscilla Martin moved her family to Memphis to escape from her husband, a trek the family made by mule-drawn wagon. Dempsey married Will Harden, and Lillian Hardin was born on February 3, 1898. She grew up in a household with her grandmother. Will died when Lil was seven. Dempsey later remarried to John Miller. During her early years, Hardin was taught hymns, spirituals, and classical music on the piano. She was drawn to popular music and later blues. Early education and mentors Hardin first received piano instruction from her third-grade teacher, Violet White. Her mother then enrolled her in Mrs. Hook's School of Music. At Fisk University, a college for African Americans in Nashville, she received more advanced training, and earning a diploma from Fisk, returned to Memphis in 1917. In August 1918, she moved to Chicago with her mother and stepfather. By then she had become a proficient sight-reader, a skill that helped her gain a job as a sheet music demonstrator at Jones Music Store. The store paid Hardin $3 a week ($61 in 2023 dollars), but bandleader Lawrence Duhé offered $22.50 ($458 in 2023 dollars[9]). Knowing that her mother would disapprove of her working in a cabaret, she made it known that her new job was playing for a dancing school. As observed by Thomas Brothers, the discrepancies between her education and that of Duhé's band members were apparent; when she asked what key the New Orleanians were going to play in, they remarked, "We don't know what key. When you hear two knocks start playing." Three weeks later the band moved to a better booking at the De Luxe Café, where the entertainers included Florence Mills and Cora Green. From there, the band moved up to Dreamland. Here the principal entertainers were Alberta Hunter and Ollie Powers. When King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band replaced Duhé's group at Dreamland, Oliver asked Hardin to stay with him. She was with Oliver at Dreamland in 1921 when an offer came for the orchestra to play a six-month engagement at the Pergola Ballroom in San Francisco. At the end of that booking Hardin returned to Chicago while the rest of the Oliver band went to Los Angeles. She later studied at the New York College of Music, where she earned a post-graduate diploma in 1929.

Marriages and divorces In Chicago, Hardin returned to work at Dreamland as a pianist in an orchestra for Mae Brady, a violinist and vaudeville stalwart. While there, she fell for Jimmie Johnson, a young singer from Washington, D.C., whom she married on August 22, 1922. The marriage was short-lived, ending in divorce. The Oliver band returned from California and opened at the Royal Gardens with Bertha Gonsoulin at the piano but soon found itself back at Dreamland with Hardin at the piano. King Oliver's band was enjoying enormous success at Dreamland when he sent for Louis Armstrong to join as second cornetist. Armstrong was beginning to make a name for himself in New Orleans and regarded Oliver ("Papa Joe") as his mentor. At first, Hardin was unimpressed, remembering that she "was very disgusted" by Louis, who arrived in Chicago wearing clothes and a hair style that she deemed to be "too country" for Chicago, but she worked to "take the country out of him", and a romance developed (to the surprise of other band members, some of whom had been trying to woo her for some time with no success). They would visit cabarets and after-hour spots after their job at Lincoln Gardens, but their relationship was solidified after Armstrong's mother's intervention in 1923, when she visited Armstrong in Chicago. She and Armstrong needed to be divorced from their previous relationships (Lil Hardin to Jimmie Johnson, Louis Armstrong to Daisy Armstrong) and "claimed desertion" from said relationships to annul the marriages. Hardin and Armstrong were married on February 5, 1924, and honeymooned/toured with the Oliver band in Biglerville, Pennsylvania. The Defender noted that Hardin was dressed in a "Parisian gown of white crepe elaborately beaded in rhinestones and silver beads." Hardin took Armstrong shopping and taught him how to dress more fashionably. She got rid of his bangs and began working to foster his career. In addition to updating his appearance, Hardin assisted Armstrong in learning classical music with the help of a German teacher in Chicago. She felt he was wasting his talent in a secondary role. Armstrong was happy to be playing next to his idol, but Hardin at first persuaded him to manage his own money and assert himself on the bandstand and during recording sessions; eventually, she convinced him to leave Oliver and go out on his own. Armstrong resigned from Oliver's band and in September 1924 accepted a job with bandleader Fletcher Henderson in New York City. Hardin stayed in Chicago, first with Oliver, then leading a band of her own. When Hardin's band got a job at the Dreamland Café in Chicago, she prepared for Armstrong's return to Chicago by having a huge banner that read "The World's Greatest Trumpet Player". Richard M. Jones convinced Okeh Records to make a series of sessions under his name: the Armstrong "Hot Five" recordings. With Hardin at the piano, Kid Ory on trombone, Johnny Dodds on clarinet, and Johnny St. Cyr on banjo, this group rehearsed at Armstrong and Hardin's residence on Chicago's East 41st Street and held its first session on November 15, 1925. In the late 1920s, Hardin and Armstrong grew apart due to class differences and money issues. He formed a new Hot Five with Earl Hines on piano. Hardin reformed her own band with Freddie Keppard, whom she considered second only to Armstrong. Hardin and Armstrong separated in 1931 when he had a liaison with Alpha Smith, who threatened to sue Armstrong for breach of promise, so he begged Hardin not to grant him a divorce. They finally divorced in 1938. Later years In the 1930s, sometimes billing herself as "Mrs. Louis Armstrong", Hardin led an "All Girl Orchestra", a mixed-sex big band which broadcast nationally over the NBC radio network. In the same decade she recorded for Decca as a swing vocalist and performed as piano accompanist for other singers. She also performed with Red Allen. Solo work In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Hardin worked mostly as a soloist, singing and playing piano. In the late 1940s, she decided to leave the music business and become a tailor, so she took a course in tailoring. Her graduation project was to make a tuxedo for Armstrong. Hardin returned to Chicago and the house on East 41st Street. She made a trip to Europe and had a brief love affair in France, but mostly she worked around Chicago, often with fellow Chicagoans. Collaborators included Red Saunders, Joe Williams, Oscar Brown Jr., and Little Brother Montgomery. In the 1950s, Hardin recorded a biographical narrative for Bill Grauer at Riverside Records that was issued in LP form. She would again appear on that label in 1961, participating in its project _Chicago: The Living Legends_ as accompanist for Alberta Hunter and leader of her own hastily assembled big band. The Riverside recordings led to her inclusion in a 1961 NBC network special, _Chicago and All That Jazz,_ and a follow-up album released by Verve. In 1962, she began writing her autobiography with Chris Albertson, but she changed her mind when she realized the book would include experiences that might discomfit Louis Armstrong, so the project was delayed until his death. She died before finishing the book. When Louis Armstrong died in 1971, she traveled to New York for the funeral and rode in the family car. Returning to Chicago, she felt that work on her autobiography could continue, but the following month, performing at a televised memorial concert for Armstrong, she collapsed at the piano and died from a heart attack on the way to the hospital. After her funeral, her letters and the unfinished manuscript of her autobiography disappeared from her house. She was interred at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island, Illinois. In 2004, the Chicago Park District renamed a community park in her honor. Legacy Hardin's song "Bad Boy" (originally titled "Brown Gal") was covered by the Jive Bombers (first in 1950 as "Brown Boy") whose 1956 version was a hit, and by Ringo Starr in 1978 on his seventh album Bad Boy. Armstrong's composition "Oriental Swing" was sampled by electro swing musician Parov Stelar to create the 2012 song "Booty Swing". The song gained notoriety when it was used in a 2013 Chevrolet commercial.

De Canadezen noemden hem Bill Longstreet from Holland. Mai 1936 in Berlin geboren. _Corey, Corey_ aka *"Darlin' Cory"* (also "Darling Corey" or "Darling Cora") (Roud 5723) is a well-known American folk song about love, loss, and moonshine. It is similar in theme to "Little Maggie" and "The Gambling Man" but is not considered the same as those songs. Early printed versions The earliest published version of "Darlin' Corey" occurs as verses within the song "The Gambling Man", collected from oral tradition by folklorist Cecil Sharp, as sung by Mrs. Clercy Deeton, at Mine Fork, Burnsville, N.C., on Sept. 19, 1918. The text (without tune) was also published as "Little Cora" in Harvey H. Fuson's Ballads of the Kentucky Highlands (London, 1931). A version from the singing of Aunt Molly Jackson appears in the book Our Singing Country (1941) by John A. Lomax and Alan Lomax. It is also included in _Folk Song, U.S.A._ by John A. and Alan Lomax, Charles Seeger and Ruth Crawford Seeger (Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1947), pp. 310-311. Early recordings The first known commercial audio recording was made by Clarence Gill as "Little Corey" on January 6, 1927, but was rejected by the record company and never released. A few months later, folk singer Buell Kazee recorded it as "Darling Cora" on April 20, 1927 (Brunswick 154). Later the same year, on July 29, 1927, at the famous Bristol Sessions an influential version was recorded by B. F. Shelton as "Darlin' Cora" (Victor 35838). Other early recordings are "Little Lulie" by Dick Justice (1929) and "Darling Corey", released as a single by the Monroe Brothers in 1936. In 1941, The Monroe Brothers' version was included in a landmark 5-disc compilation, Smoky Mountain Ballads, produced and annotated by noted folklorist John A. Lomax (Victor Records). Whereas the earlier, "hillybilly" records had been marketed regionally, "Smoky Mountain Ballads" was intended for broad, urban audiences. It comprised reissues of ten comparatively recent commercially issued hillbilly recordings from the 1930s, including, in addition to the performance of "Darlin' Cory" by the Monroe Brothers, songs by the Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon, Mainer's Mountaineers, and other Southeastern performers. Smoky Mountain Ballads became a staple in the repertoires of 1940s and early '50s folk music revival singers such as Pete Seeger, who was meticulous in crediting his sources and urged that people copy them and not him. That same year on May 28, 1941, Burl Ives also recorded "Darlin' Cory" it in his debut album Okeh Presents the Wayfaring Stranger (issued August 1941 with liner notes by Alan Lomax). Lyrics Wake up, wake up darlin cory Tell me what makes you sleep so sound The revenue officers are comin Gonna tear your still house down [Chorus] Dig a hole, dig a hole in the meadow Dig a hole in the cold, cold ground Dig a hole, dig a hole in the meadow Gonna lay darlin cory down Oh the first time I saw darlin cory She was standin in the door She had her shoes and her stockings in her hand And her little bare feet on the floor Oh the next time I saw darlin cory She was standin by the banks of the sea she had a 44 strapped around her body And a banjo on her knee Oh the last time I saw darlin cory She had a wine glass in her hand She was drinkin that sweet liquor With a low down gamblin man. 1966 - *"España cañí"* (meaning "Picturesque Spain" in Spanish; also known as _España gitana)_ is a damous instrumental of Spanish music. The Paso Doble was written in 1923 by Pascual Marquina Narro (1873-1948). Marquina dedicated it to his dear friend and patron designer from Almansa (Albacete) José López de la Osa. In English, the piece is also known as the *Spanish Gypsy Dance.* The song was written around 1923 and first recorded in 1926 by the band of the Regimiento Ingenieros de Madrid. In 1927, the piece was recorded by the Regal Chapel and the Regimiento de Badajoz N.º 73. In 1928, the Encarnación López Júlvez (1895-1945), known as _La Argentinita,_ followed with a version with castanets and stomping. Rondalla Usandizaga recorded it on Victor Recordings in 1929. In 1931 the House of Odeón released a version written by Alfredo Corral Moraleda and sung by Marcos Redondo, which was accompanied by the Odeón band and the conductor Antonio Capdevila. Its main refrain (eight bars of arpeggiated chords that go from E major to F major (with added 4 instead of 5) to G major and back) is arguably the best-known snippet of Spanish music and is popular worldwide. Several arrangements of the tune are often used for the Latin Paso Doble dance (to the point that, among Latin dancers, it is known as "the paso doble song" as it is very commonly played in competition due to the common custom for the choreography to match the phrasing and accents of the music for the full effect of the dance). It is also a chant played and voiced by the supporters of Eskişehirspor of Turkey. The song has also been used as the theme song for Pablo Sanchez in the Backyard Sports games. *España cañí / Spanish Gypsy Dance - instrumental* Banda del Regimiento de Badajoz Nº 73 bajo la dirección del maestro Palanca 1927 Banda Regal 1927 Morton Gould and His Orchestra 1942 Tejada y su orquesta de conciertos 1948 Hoger Streven 1953 Jo Privat et son orchestre 1954 Live Gran Orquesta de Baile Jul 1955 Banda Municipal de Madrid - Dirección: Jesús Arámbarri Apr 1956 Michel Legrand and His Orchestra Jun 1956 Agrupación Sinfónica "La Zarzuela" - Dir.: Federico Moreno Torroba 1956 Joaquín Gomar Sep 1957 Armandino et son orchestre 1957 George Wright 1957 Lew Raymond Orchestra 1957 Marcel Feijoo et son orchestre 1957 Johnny Puleo and His Harmonica Gang Aug 1958 101 Strings 1958 Antonio Bisio 1958 Charles Verstraete et son ensemble musette 1958 Orquesta Barcino 1958 Ronald Binge and His Orchestra 1958 Yvette Horner 1958 Terig Tucci and His Orchestra 1959 Jo Basile, His Accordion and Orchestra 1959 Tony Murena et son ensemble musette 1959 Herb Zane and His Orchestra Oct 1960 Al Caiola 1960 Adel Valentine 1960 Banda Taurina de Madrid 1960 Emma Maleras - Castañuelas y orquesta 1960 María Luisa Romero 1960 Moreno Buendía y su gran orquesta 1960 Orquesta Florida 1960 Orquesta Maravella dirigida por Luis Ferrer 1960 Lester Lanin and His Orchestra May 1961 Irv Cotler 1961 David Carrol and His Orchestra 1961 Jack Hansen and His Orchestra 1961 Banda de la Policía Armada y de Tráfico de Barcelona - Director: Julián Palanca 1961 Esquivel and His Orchestra 1961 Gran Orquesta de Profesores Solistas - Dirección: J. *Pascual Marquina Narro* (Calatayud, Zaragoza; May 16, 1873 - Madrid; July 13, 1948) was a Spanish composer and conductor. He was born into a family of musicians. His father, Santiago Marquina Redrado, was director of various orchestras, among others the Musical Band of the Unión Bilbilitana, the Banda de Música de Tobé and the Banda de Música de Torrella. He received his first music lessons from his father, but from the age of seven he became part of the Coro de Infantes de la Basílica del Santo Sepulcro, under the direction of Ildefonso Pardos. At the age of nine he played the flute with the Banda Musical de la Unión Bilbilitana. At fifteen he wrote his first composition, a work for tenor and organ, titled _Osarum._ He became director of the Banda de Música de Daroca at the age of 17. Two years later, he did his military service in the Luchana Regiment Band in Barcelona. At the same time, he studied composition and harmony at the Conservatorio Superior Municipal de Música Barcelona, under the supervision of José María Varela Silvari (1848-1926), Martínez Sorolla and Bonet, among others. In 1901 he became director of the Banda de Música del Regimiento de Cazadores de Llerena and later, in 1916, of the Banda de Música del Segundo Regimiento de Ingenieros de Zapadores de Madrid, with which he gave many concerts both in Spain and abroad. In 1904, he began to compose tonal works to impress the Madrid public. In 1914 he became director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela. For 18 years he was artistic director of the record company La Voz de su Amo. He was awarded the Cross of the Order of Victoria of the United Kingdom (Victoria Cross) for a composition in which he brought together the Spanish anthem, the _Marcha Real,_ and the anthem _God Save the Queen,_ on the occasion of the wedding of Alfonso XIII of Spain with Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg. He was also honored with the cross and plaque of the Order of San Hermenegildo, la Cruz del Mérito Militar and la Cruz del Rif. He is also the composer of the "King of Pasodobles", the world-famous *España cañí,* which originally bore the name _El patronista Cañí,_ dedicated to the patron saint of Almansa José López de la Osa. The work was premiered in Almansa (the town where José López lived) on Aniceto Coloma Street at the door of his home, performed by the Banda de Ingenieros de Madrid. He composed it on a train trip to Madrid, inspired by the rattle of the train. There are streets dedicated to Pascual Marquina in the cities of Cartagena, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Oviedo, Montilla, Almansa and Villena.
