The third piece in this trio of divertimenti. I actually wrote several of the motifs in 1968 and a piece called Two Impressions was performed at Grendon Hall in 1968. Here is my re-working of them 55 years later.

The sicilienne is loosely associated with Sicily and evokes a pastoral mood, characterized by dotted rhythms. It is in a slow 6/8 time with lilting rhythms, making it resemble a slow jig or tarantella, and is usually in a minor key. This one is quite quick!

In the Bottoms referes to the river beds in the southern states of America and Honey is a term of endearment for one who lived in the area.

Written, whilst a student at the Conservatoire, this piece has nothing to do with a dead princess. It simply reminded Ravel of painting a yourng princess and was dedicated to a living princess.

Originally composed in 1913 as a sight-reading piece for the Conservatoire de Paris Piano Competitions. This lyrical piece creates an impressionistic musical landscape. There are a few unexpected harmonies.

Brahms’ late piano works, from Op.116 to Op.119, were composed mostly in Bad Ischl, Austria in Summer 1892. All have a reflective nature, with moments of lyricism and heart-warming sections. Dedicated to Clara Schumann who praised them as “a true source of enjoyment, everything, poetry, passion, rapture, intimacy, full of the most marvellous effects”.

The second of the 6 Pieces Op118 by Brahms. Intermezzo in A major. Andante teneramente. Written for Clara Schumann to play in her autumn years this piece is full of passionate tenderness, nostalgia and yearning. I have added some photographs of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II which seem to capture it's mood perfectly.

The first of the two scherzi, D593. usually the scherzo substitutes the aristocratic Minuet and Trio as the third movement of a Symphony or Sonate. Here the two scherzi exist in their own right.

Schubert - 10 Landler from D366

The Ländler is a folk dance in 3/4 time which was popular in Austria, Bavaria, German Switzerland, and Slovenia at the end of the 18th century. Schubert's collection of 17 landler is similar to Chopin Waltzes in that they are not meant to be danced to. Here, Schubert creates little musical gems from the original tunes. I have recorded just 10 of the best.

Schubert -Allegretto in C minor

This piece was written in 1827 for one of Schubert's friends, Ferdinand Walcher, although it was not published until 1870, after Schubert's death. Schubert copied the piece into Walcher’s album at his farewell party.
