Overview of my DIY Adaptive Crochet Aid
This is the overview of how to build my DIY crochet aid that I think some of you are waiting for. Unfortunately, there is no clip of me actually building the aid step-by-step. I've also written the time stamps, which I will put in the comments below this video.
I filmed this video in the span of two days, so that's why you can see the change of clothes in the video.
Here are a bunch of links to things I've talked about in this video.
This is the video that changed the whole landscape of crocheting for me.

    I am trying very hard to rest my right hand because of tendonitis, which I extremely aggravated over this last week trying to get an afghan done by yesterday, and of course now I regret it. And I crochet and sew all the time. So my right hand and wrist hurting for little things is really, really not cool. I just tried sewing with my left hand, and I guess it can work, it's just going to take a lot longer. But then I tried crocheting with my left hand, and OUCH. Having to grasp the yarn and hold it out with my right hand hurt definitely too much. Very discouraging. I was sitting here trying to decide what I was going to do about that and just randomly said, "Hey Google, can you crochet with one hand?" And the first thing that came up, was your article in Medium! I am so very excited to find you. Thank you so much! I am going to get creative with this!

    Oh my god! I had a stroke and only have the use of one hand. I can't wait to try this trick. I don't crochet or knit, but I might try it. I'm also going to order that fantastic cutting board that you recommended. Can't wait to start cutting my own vegetables (and bagels!). If you happen to know of any other one handed tutorials or resources for hemiplegiacs maybe you could send me some links. It would be greatly appreciated. Love your channel and just subscribed. I speak like broken Kaipingnese, and the words that I said in this video are the words I am very confident is saying. And I agree with you 100%, there isn't much content surrounding the Kaiping dialect here on TH-cam. I did find a fair amount of Taishanese content, but there is a slight difference in how we pronouce the characters and words. I don't want to mispronouce the words or phrases (I'm not a fluent speaker unfortunately) Thank you for leaving this comment!

    This is an awesome video and I'm glad you shared it so it can be an inspiration to others who have that limitation. I'm curious though, do you have any problem with the tension of the yarn? I know having it on the floor provides some tension itself, but I'm thinking that there may be times when you might need a little more tension on the yarn, such as maybe adding a clip that can be moved down the yarn as it is being used but also at the same time would apply tension to the yarn by its own weight if needed? What kind of things have you been able to create?

Where are some good places to buy an affordable one for a starter and someone on a budget? I plan to do a simple bag with her, lol does it take a certain type of machine? I have a mass in one of my fingers on my dominant hand. I just had a procedure done on it, which failed and has given me nerve damage. I can barely crochet at the moment. I'm considering surgery, but since there is nerve involvement (some level of the mass squishing or enveloping a nerve) the surgery comes with greater risk. I've been so scared I would lose the only hobby that brings me peace, but this series gave me hope, so thank you very much. I did want to ask whether you crocheted before your stroke, and if so what was the adjustment like? I know I'm already harsh on myself knowing how quickly/easily I used to crochet. Did you face this, and if so, what helped these thoughts?

    • @imhelenzhou
      @imhelenzhou 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t know how to crochet before my stroke. I actually didn’t know this kind of fiber art existed. Learning how I can crochet with one hand was tough because back when I had interest (in 2020), there weren’t many TH-cam videos about one handed crochet aids. I don’t have the experience of crocheting with two hands, but I think it would feel different because the crochet hook is stationary. Traditionally when crocheting, you move hook, and yarn over and such, but you use one hand, you can’t move the hook (if you’re using a crochet aid like me) You can only move the yarn to wrap around the crochet hook. I feel like it’s a different process to get to the end goal. Hope this helps! And you can check my Instagram page @imhelenzhou for extra short videos😊

    Thank you Helen. I just entered “how to sew with one hand” into the search and your video came up first. I shattered my humerus two weeks ago and sewing is my daily hobby in retirement and also my primary anxiety relief. Today is my first time trying to get off the couch to do something. Pain is still an issue but I’m lucky to have broken my non-dominant arm. I hate weaving the ends in so I crochet over mine as Im working it. Before I'm finished say ten twenty stitches left I stretch out more yarn than I need. Then I cut it offthen i lay the cut end four inches or so over work that ive already made. I make sure the rest of the yarn is laying on top of the last previous row. I finish my last few stitches like its not there and when I get to the last stitch I can pull the cut end and close the loop up all the way so the only loop thats left is as small as a regular stitch and use it for the color change. Its somewhat unavoidable if its the end stitch of the project but makes it a lot less work at least for the color changes
