Learn How to Mooch for Salmon with Capt. Keith Robbins Mooching is a fun, active way to fish, and a favorite for Captain Keith Robbins and his fishing guide guests in Puget Sound. Preparing Bait for Mooching - The Cut Plug I've used herring for bait in this example of mooching, and preparation of your bait is an important part of mooching. Place your knife just behind the gill plate of the herr...

    I often get tangles when I'm dropping the line unless I go really slow. Any tips would be appreciated.

      You should use less weight, better swivels, cast away from the boat so the line drifts back toward the boat also you can hand strip one strip at a time for the first 30-fifty feet or the entire water column if the is no current. Good luck and have fun.

    In Florida, the experienced fishermen go great lengths to prevent lura /bait from spinning (“helicoptering”) on the ground that it doesn’t look natural to the fish. Why do you want it to spin? Do you guide?

      Yes I am a guide this is my 30th season. I like the bait to spin Fast as an attractor.

      @@ASpotTailSalmonGuideSeattle I'm new to the area. Will be in touch for an outing once we have settled in. I like fly fishing, but the mooching looks fine too. As long as it's not that trolling with down riggers. I did that once and it's boredom city. I recently moved from Florida, where I had my own boat, but it was not the right kind of boat for here. You sure look bundled up warm on your videos. Is that what you wear out on Puget Sound even at this (September) time of year? I'm used to fishing in shorts and a T-shirt.

    im up here in the puget sound on my 45 foot sailboat and have been trying to learn to fish and i have to say..... so far.... i hate it. thats probably because i cant catch anything. Ive never even gotten a hit. At this point id be happy if a fish just came by and stole my bait. My intent is to catch salmon. And im not interested in sport fishing.... im fishing for food. Do you know how embarassing it is to own a nice big sailboat like mine and be buying all your fish and salmon from Albertsons. ive been mooching with herring like youve shown but im guessing im not fishing the right areas. Can you give some tips as to what and where to go or what to look for? shallow water? sides of the channels and the sound? center of the sound? I do have a depth indication on my boat that shows accurate depth down to 325 feet deep. Help me become less of a loserrrrrrr lol

      Timing is very important and so are locations. Salmon fishing is closed right now. There are way to many factors. Tides, currents,timing. There are way to many things to go over via email but i do mooching trainings all the time on my boat. Please go ahead and book me and i can help you and it will take the whole six hours. Thanks for your interest

      Pay some money and go out with a charter. Learn as much as you can, then apply those lessons while on your boat.

    Excellent concise instructions. Been a while since mooching and am planning on trying tomorrow at a known mooching spot, just for fun instead of trolling. Good refresher video. Thanks,

    Should you be anchored while mooching? Or drifting with the tide or wind? Thanks

    • @flymooch
      @flymooch 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      YYOu can anchor but not if there are a bunch trollers around,. But there must be a bunch of current

    you can't compare mooching with trolling. trolling with all it's flashers and weights takes the sport out of landing smaller salmon, in fact often you won't even know you have caught a small salmon trolling. Mooching leaves no doubt that you have a fish on!

    Captain Keith does know what he is doing, hired him last year for a USMC friend trip and he was fantastic. This year I have my own boat and hope to use what he taught us last year.

    Light tackle mooching is our specialty! This is a fun, active, hands-on fishing technique compared to trolling, which is passive. On our charter boat, you will actively work the bait at different depths. This type of fishing is intended for those who like to cast, hold their own rod and hook, and feel the fish bite.
