How much do I love this video? I don't know... Hope that simple idea for a clip won't be utilized too much, 'cause that'd get boring easily, but with this song, with those amazing guys, and with Kim's breathtaking smile, it's all simply marvelous. Thank you.

He looks tired and frail here. I’d read that he was sickly in his later years, sleeping very little and working too much, and based on his relationship with his father, eschewing medical care for his entire lifetime. While I question whether his death occurred naturally, this is not the robust Kubrick of the 70s in this video, and he is aged much more than the twenty years time. Perhaps he died as his manner of death stated after all.

Kubrick sent take #74 to the Directors Guild of America and then asked them to retract it before sending them take #77, the one we see.

I like how Kubrick's speech didn't focus on himself, but rather the namesake of the award. He talked about the success, trials, and tribulations of DW Griffith, a man who was instrumental to the advancement of motion pictures but who carries a tarnished legacy to this day. For example, while Birth of a Nation is technically incredible, it's still a propaganda piece glorifying the Ku Klux Klan, so much so that it was instrumental to that organization's revival in the late teens. That's a fact. It's also a fact that the award no longer bears Griffith's name

Interesting perspective on the Icarus myth! Maybe DW Griffiths was just getting his karmic reward for peddling racist propaganda. However great a film maker you might be you can't escape your karma!

    D. W. Griffith made some of the greatest films ever made and influenced many others. As one of the greatest Actresses of all time Lillian Gish said it best with the title of her autobiography, "D.W. Griffith, the Movies and me".

I'm both surprised and not that Kubrick admired Griffith. Technically he was The Pioneer of cinema. Ethically and ideologically he was an absolute disgrace. I say this however not yet in my life having watched Intolerance, but after seeing Birth Of A Nation at a college class decades ago I had more than my fill of the manifestations of that diseased mind. I consider that innovatively filmed piece of hell alongside Mien Kampf in terms of it's evil. I consider Kubrick however to be a literal prophet of art, but it's becoming more obvious to me everyday how highly he placed the technical achievements of his art over any ethical implications it may have; even if he himself used his art to try and draw attention to, condemn and liberate minds from the same crimes that Griffith celebrated and promoted.
