Setting a Seconds Hand
มุมมอง 8K6 ปีที่แล้ว
This method is just for the seconds hand and wouldn't work with minutes and hours hands as you'd get Rodico gumming things up. When I started doing modding, setting the hands always proved tricky, with the seconds hand being the most fiddly. I've never liked those little hand setting stands with 3 or 5 pushers on springs and prefer to use this type. I still use a blob of rodico on the end of a ...
Watch Water Resistance Pressure Test Fail. Seiko SKX007. Aftermarket caseback.
มุมมอง 58K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Just thought I'd publish this little video of my first real FAIL test. I've done over 30 watches in this machine and wouldn't now be without it. The watch in question is my own SKX007 with a sapphire crystal, new seals, SARB059 crown and an aftermarket caseback. My Calipso watch pressure tester is rated to 11bar. This is a little short of the 200Meter rated water resistance of a SKX007 but as y...
SLA017 after regulating.
มุมมอง 4076 ปีที่แล้ว
My SLA017 62mas re-dition had been running at 11seconds per day fast with a small beat error of 0.2 to 0.3ms. This watch has been babied and suffered no trauma. Spencer Klein's recent video spurred me to open her up and see if I can get some better regulation. This is my result on the timegrapher at a guessed 53° lift angle but the real test will be to wear it daily for the next couple of weeks...

Bulova Accutron Deep Sea 666 Tuning Fork

Beautiful smooth sweeping seconds hand from both of these watches , which have Tuning Fork movements running at 360hz and an index wheel with 320 microscopic teeth. Bulova accuton Deep Sea 'B' in black from 1971 and the more well known Deep Sea 666 from 1970 where the top crown rotates the inner bezel. Thank you...❤...done with my 1st build...because of this..😅...
Brilliant !! 😃 A good 1st experience often leads to more.
Thanks so much for this video! I was getting so frustrated with my built and I wanted to give up.
@@JoshuaLovesWatch my pleasure Joshua. Good luck with your horological adventures
Genius. Thank you for the trick🙂
@@paoloagro1920 pleasure. Good luck with your horological adventures
I took hours trying to do this + broke two seconds hands. Can’t believe you made it look so easy … Hopefully I can do it correctly when the new hands arrive
Maybe consider buying an inexpensive hands press and holding the hand in position with a toothpick with rodico at the end? Everyone has their own preferred methods. Good luck on your next go 🤞
@@tunokieswill look into that thanks
So glad I’ve seen this, always a very simple way out there, I always struggle for hours trying to fit seconds hand and more often than not damage hands in the process
I'm pleased that this helped you on your way with your project. 6 years on and still getting comments.
very interesting
very helpful, thanks.
Years later and still saving lives. Thank you so much honestly
@@Zed.Y. hahaha….well, I don’t know about saving lives….saving frustrations perhaps.
Why is it that whenever I use roticonit leaves tons of marks and residue on my hands or anything it touches
@@OGbrundle I presume that’s a mistype and you mean Rodico. Get the Premium rodico which is grey product number 7033 it’s less tacky and smudges less than the blue 6033 Rodico. Good luck with your watchmaking … oh…and use finger-cots if you’re not already as that helps a lot with not transferring oils. Always use new pieces of Rodico and new finger cots for each new visit to the workbench if you can.
@@tunokies yes that's definitely a typo haha. I am using the blue stuff, and finger cots are getting changed even multiple times during a build depending on what I touch
@@OGbrundle hopefully if you use the gray rodico it will be better for you, just as it was for me
Awesome trick of the trade. Thank you.
The comments are littered with congrats on a great method. I haven't tried it yet, I definately will BUT I have a question: Doesn't this method make it hard to see where the centre of your seconds hand is, making it hard to line it up. I know you did it very easily in the video but is that because you have practised and perfected this method? Thanks for any comments, I'm not trying to throw shade, I am genuinely curious before I try this method.
@@natsterjam good question. If you raise your working area or lower your chair so you are almost side-on rather than looking top down you will have no problems. Good luck with your modding. Not everything goes right first time.
@@tunokies Great answer, thanks I will try it out on my next build/mod 👍
6 years later and this video has saved me and others countless hours of frustration and helped me assemble my first two NH35 watches. Thanks!
@@remionthemoon glad it helped
Well I’m not sure how it happened but the second hand reached mach1 and flew away
🚀 😆🤣haha, went to the same place that odd socks go to. It happens
This is the best method!
Thanks bro was stuck on my seconds hand for hours mate
No problem 👍
Awesome simply awesome, great tip!
Just tried this method , worked flawlessly 💪👍🏼
Nice one 👍🏻
Hello and THANK YOU!!! I used your method for my Minute hand AND Seconds hand. This method worked flawlessly. This was my first experience building a watch from parts, and I just built my first watch ever from parts. GMT NH34 movement, classic style. Now I just need to trim my crown stem. Please make more videos about watches. Any more tips would appreciated greatly.
Pleasure John, glad it helped. Trimming your crown stem - measure twice, cut it a little too long and file it down to the right length, holding it with a pin vice. Regards, J.
@@tunokies I measured twice and cut/ground it down a few times...until I was satisfied with the crown stem. Thank you! (I'm also convinced with my very very limited experience that more people should try your method for placing the seconds hand.P This method also worked on my second watch build for ALL of the hands. :)
I'm just wondering what's the max depth this aftermarket caseback can hold? When does it start to crack?
No way its that easy I too scared to try it. I am building my first watch.
It’s that easy. Good luck with your watchmaking. The 3 keys to enjoying it are to raise your work area up to about neck height, have good lighting and some sort of magnification. Makes everything else more fun once you’re comfortable for a few hours.
@@tunokies thanks I will give a try
I tried this before I saw this tip but used too much putty and ended up with a mess. Just a little goes a long way and it's key!
Good job - yes, using too much means stabbing at it several times to pick up excess putty. Keep on enjoying your watchmaking sir 👍
wow i was 2 hours in trying to fit the seconds hand and about to give up this hobby but you saved the day great method
My pleasure. Happy to help
This will be useful forever, absolutely helpful!
Brilliant!!! I was struggling for 20 minutes with a second hand…saw your tip and set it in 5 seconds! Done half a dozen since! TA!
My pleasure. I'm glad it helped. Crazy that I got 2 comments in 24 hours, five years after uploading it.
Holy crap where were you when I spent hours cursing the world!!!
hahaha....I hope it helps you in the future. Crazy that I got 2 comments in 24 hours, five years after uploading it.
@@tunokies should be saved to watch in every new watch enthusiasts folder. You’re brilliant, thank you for making life a tiny bit easier for us.
I believe some pressure should be released before lowering the case into the water. It there is a leak, you want the internal pressure to be higher than the external pressure. Otherwise you'll just be forcing water into the case when you dunk it. I think the pressure was still equalizing while it was sitting in the water.
You are right sir.
here do youget that tool
It depends what country you are in. Search horotec hand setting tool (set of 4)
Hi! Do You have a video when a helium escape valves is operating? I mean when it opens? That will be very interesting.
It would indeed. I've no watches with an HE valve unfortunately. I don't recall having seen such a video.
What failed here? Was it a machining issue? Gasket failed? Good thing is you didn’t do it with the movement, would’ve turned into a nightmare.
The machining of the aftermarket caseback was at fault.
@@tunokies thank you for your reply :). good to know I will never blindly trust aftermarket parts just because they fit, and I can sleep peacefully tonight knowing the problem. Have a great day ahead.
That must have one serious movement inside.
yeah....the 6m movements were pretty cool. I don't think they make them anymore.....which is a shame
Thank you! This was the most helpful method. It worked perfectly!
My pleasure
Very interesting video!, thank you for sharing! what if instead water, it is used isopropyl alcohol, for example? so you can test a watch with the movement inside, and if it goes wrong is not water what is coming inside. Is it feasible? Thank you!
I'm just an amateur. This is my only piece of testing kit. I don't know how that liquid would react to the seals inside the testing chamber or the seals on the watch.
@@tunokies Well, I mentioned because isopropyl alcohol it is used for cleaning in electronic, it is not aggressive with plastics.
@@federicoacker5672 alcohol would remove the oils from the movement. It would need to be serviced just the same.
@@cv600rr Of Course! you are right!, thank you for your answer!
I just recently broke off the center pin on the cannon pinion trying to install a seconds hand.....I'm going to try this TY!
Ouch. Watch tinkering is as frustrating as it is satisfying. Have fun in your endeavours 👍🏻
Just subbed! Awesome mod! Nothing like getting some mods in! 🔥🔥
Great vid. I always wonder how this was done without getting water in the watch.
Thanks Peter. I only really did it because I couldn't find anything similar that showed a fail with the bubbles streaming out.
I used to scuba dive alot years ago a got a smaller unit to test my watches periodically as they can be a bit expensive if they drown. Sort of noticed after about two to three years of age a 200m watch would leak around 50/60m .
That seems quite a short period of time but perhaps the regular use would necessitate a more regular change of gaskets and new silicon grease application.
omg.. thank you.. I have a borked skx that I'm trying to upgrade to a nh36 and I had been futzing around for 30 minutes trying to get the seconds hand... watched this and boom next try on and running.... cheers
Great stuff.....my pleasure.
..and me... why is there no water in the case ? What is the need for an aftermarket case back if the original didn't leak ?
The aftermarket case back was a display (glass) back to view the movement. That was one of the mods/upgrades I was doing. There is no water in the case because the pressurised/compressed air that got forced into the watch in the top chamber escapes the case as I release the pressure valve. If I had started to pump up the pressure with the watch in the water then water would most likely have got into the watch. There's a really good explanation video from Mark at the longislandwatch channel under his watch and learn section. He's an engineer and can explain much better than me.
Thanks for the video!
Did the rubber gasket fail ?
No...it was the machining of the notches in the caseback..
A nice presentation - thanks for taking the time to film and publish 👌⌚👍
By no means professional 😉....the only reason for publication was that at the time, I couldn't find anything which showed what a failure looked like. I hope it's useful for someone.
Thanks, so interesting, first time to see this test done
But a compressor
Now that's clever! Awesome tip.
Well made
Great vid
What a simple yet excellent tip. Thank you.
Nice video. Are you sure it's from 1994 and not 2004? Looks especially attractive on the Isofrane. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure. Yes it's definitely 1994. For example, the Tuna SBBN035 I am wearing right now has the dates going round the caseback starting with 22 then 23,24,25 etc and it's serial starts with a 7 making it a 2017 watch with it's first battery change due in 5 years ie. 2022. Hope that helps. 👍🏻
Dude! Excuse my French, but that was fucking awesome! I've been looking for a way to apply a seconds hand, without having to fiddle with it for hours on end. You da man!!!!!
Thanks dear friend for nice video. I see this testing machine is well done - good quality of producing, looks it could keep pressure during 5-10 minutes very well. Can You tell me what is manufcturier of this WR testing tool? Maybe You can give info where to buy it and what is price? I am watchmaker from Russia, and only chines cheap wr testing machines is possible to get in my region. Will highly appreciate any help!
It's a Calypso pressure tester made in Italy and I bought it from cousins.uk watch parts shop. It's very good quality. The up to date price will be on their website.
