In 1850, the Baltimore-built Clipper Brig "Frolic," en-route to Gold Rush San Francisco from China, wrecked on a reef just north of today's lighthouse. Her story is among the most fascinating in California shipwreck history, and the site is currently under consideration as a State underwater park.

The Frolic was a newer design schooner for the time. Commissioned by a wealthy family in Boston. Built in Baltimore. Frolic could deliver opium from the west coast of India to Shanghai or HK even if departed a couple days after a similar British old design schooner left the east coast of India. The new design was driven by the profit to be made by wealthy Bostonians who knowingly built these boats to export opium from India to China. You see, in the ebb and flow of demand economics, the supply side that supplied China with opium first would command a higher price for their opium until a British schooner would dock and flood the market with their opium thereby getting a lesser price for all the British opium and bringing down the price of the American opium. The ability to be first in the market after a dry spell generated millions of dollars even then for these Boston Traders who imported Chinese porcelin after importing Indian "goods" to China (they did actually. There was legit trade the Americans bought and sold many Indian goods in China in which some hid opium for smuggling), they bought porcelin and other Chinese goods and the Frolic is the evidence of this where it lays
