Renaissance Technologies (RenTech) Interview
Hey legends,
I hope you're all doing well!
Today I have a new style video where I just speak my mind & consciousness. It was inspired by @CodingJesus to be honest. I hope you guys can bear through my stream of words and pauses.
In this video I cover the phone interview that I had with Renaissance Technologies (RenTech). They're honestly one of the best trading companies in the world and pay a tonne to their software engineers. They have the Medellion Fund which is literally the best performing fund. So you can imagine how nervous I was when I learnt that I had an interview with them...prior to my interview I searched up my interviewer and he looked like a certified genius lol. When the interview started I was made aware that it would be possible that I could work from the USA, which at the time was always a dream of mine...making me even more nervous.
During the interview I was asked to sort a list in C...which I had no clue how to do unfortunately. I was also asked how to delete an array of elements in C++ that were allocated through the "new" keyword. I said use "delete" instead of "delete[]" and that's when the interviewer cut the interview short. I don't blame him but that's the first time it happened to me. Please don't make my mistakes and PREPARE!
Oh by the way, here's the C QuickSort function: en.cppreference.com/w/c/algorithm/qsort
Best wishes,
Tallal

nice informative video bro , thanks!
For sure! Thanks for watching
Please make a resume video. I usually watch those to learn of things to improve. And honestly, the sky's the limit. Congrats on joining Bloomberg.
Thank u so much for the comment! Much appreciate it.
Have you trained how to quickly build a good relation with the interviewer? Do you have some tricks or questions that always work well?
Hmm I didn’t do any formal training. However I’m just generally a really social person and try to talk to as many people as possible in this world. I always try and ask questions that are unique to that person’s life experiences.
@@tallulabellm1 thanks, I will try that!
You should read the Man who solved the market. Very interesting and they talk about hiring questions
Looks like an interesting book! I just hate reading 🤣 I watched some interviews about him
Nice video! Subbed right there.
You’re awesome! Thanks for the sub!
Even though getting an interview cut short must be pretty jarring, I think it's actually polite if it's handled well and if it's clear from the very start that the candidate's not going to work out. You said he was blunt, but it sounds like he at least tried to cushion the blow a bit by saying he enjoyed getting to know you. Great vid though. This appears to be the only vid talking about any part of the interview process there
Haha yeh definitely jarring! But in hindsight I really appreciated his politeness and cutting straight to the outcome!
Can you share your resume?
Oh my god. This is first on internet. Thank you
Hahahahah thank you, love this comment.
And great thumbnail, awesome video and you sound very smart not dumb at all. Keep up the good work 👑
Very cool story! I thought you got the job. I am very glad you applied, you got the interview which does count a lot!
Thanks! That's all your words are so very kind!
@@Everythinginsightful Yeh true! It's all about the experience.
I was super happy to see this is one day ago, Im finish my undergrad in 2 months and I need to know where to next w.r.t what qualifications I should pursue. Any advice would be much appreciated. My undergrad is in investment management unfortunately not math or physics related 😢
That's okay! I have seen people succeed in software coming from all different fields...even English Literature! If you're motivated & work hard, you can do it!
Could you explain how the mail text from the RenTech guy was justified?
He could have done it manually, or there are some softwares that do it automatically.
Your github link?
I don't think I am ready yet lol
I love the no cuts and raw video!
Mannnnn thanks so much! This means a lot, I was very nervous to release. They’re only gunna get better!
hey tallula, great video! I was hoping I could see a video of you passing on your wisdom on how to land and pass an interview (go over your resume, how to get referrals, cover letters, how to get recruiters to reach out, any tips or tricks when applying), then how you prepare for different types of interviews and what resources you use or revisit for you interviews and just any specific tips you have for passing interviews so not just about a singular interview experience more of a guide on landing the role
this would be amazing
Hey! Thanks so much for the comment & suggestion, I will think about how I can do that. In the meantime did you see this: th-cam.com/video/s6bOAn-czbY/w-d-xo.html I think it addresses the 2nd half of your comment.
Congrats, man! You’re the best. I’m sure you’ll succeed in becoming a quant developer at a trading firm one day!
Love how honest you are about your mistakes, we've all been there at some point! Another interview question you might see if you're interested is, if you do delete[] arr; how does the operator know how much memory to delete?
What is the solution?
new and new[] typically call malloc behind the scenes. You can take a look at the implementation of malloc. The interface of malloc takes number of bytes as the parameter. A basic implementation requests a few more bytes than requested and stores the number of bytes requested at the start of the memory and returns the pointer to the memory after the stored value. Then when you call free it checks the value at a few bytes behind the pointer for the size and then frees it. e.g. If you requested 256 bytes and you need 8 bytes to store the size, then malloc will request 256+8 bytes. Let's say the pointer address it receives is 0x0008. Then it stores the size at the first 8 bytes and returns 0x000F to the user. When user calls free(0x000F), free checks the 8 bytes starting at 0x0008 (0x000F - 8) for the size to be freed
Love to see how smart my viewers are!! Thanks for sharing.
Have you did imo or ioi?
No actually I never did. I have a few friends that did and they’re absolutely cracked.
Good work man. I`m 22 and currently lost, i love coding/find it very interesting. Do you think i could land a job without education?
YES! Keep following your passion, keep coding. Solve REAL problems that resonate with you. You will be rewarded! I'm 25 and always discovering myself each day - don't worry!

I agree, it depends. But we are definitely lucky that in software the salaries are so high.
im about to have one in November for NYC location haha. thanks
Man best of luck, this was always my dream location.
Another great video that gets the point across very simply. 👏 I think videos related to resumes would be useful to many people. It would be good if, based on your experience and the experience of your friends, you would explain each section of the resume and reveal small hacks if they exist (e.g. what kind of projects are great, how much does it mean to contribute to open-source projects, etc.). Also, I suggest that you show multiple versions of your resume and that for each version you show a list of the companies you applied to with that resume and that you show which position you applied for (internship or full-time) if it makes sense in your case.
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely take it into consideration.
I would absolutely love to see the resume video! and also what projects you did, leetcode, competitive programming, and stuff. EAGERLY WAITING. BTW, CONGRATULATIONS <3
Thanks soooo much for the kind words! LeetCode I definitely recommend using neetcode.io/practice do the Blind 75 then Neetcode 150.
What language did you use in the interview?
Java hahahah

Hahahahha. She was awesome and super kind! Mad respect for her.
I'd be interested in videos pertaining to any insights you have on the current state of financial system engineering (hardware/software)

My wife also complains that there are a lot of Romanian doctors in Switzerland! They're everywhere! They seem to be very pleasant people, fortunately.

Means a lot my friend <3
What you said about quant firms having terrible WLB is NOT true. Jane Street, Citadel, Two Sigma, HRT, Optiver and so on all expect 45-50 hours a week. That's just a regular ass work week and have no expectation for you to be on call outside of work hours. I personally know a girl working in IB and she posts all the time on her story still working at the office at 3am, recently Goldman Sachs and BoA were in the news for "limiting" their hours to 80 hours a week for junior bankers, with some IBs known for requiring 100+ hours a week.
True but I guess it’s also a matter of prospective. Would you say the work of an IB is as intellectually draining as some of the hardest work done in high frequency trading? The time is one aspect but the high stress is also another - those 45-50 hours are CRITICAL to the funds success, right? I also knew of an intern at Citadel returning at like 9pm on a Friday 😂
Agree except for Citadel lol. Citadel (not Citsec) has some very sweatshop-y teams (GQS specifically) that can go ~80 hrs/wk sometimes.
You‘ve contributed lots to the world with sharing this video. You’re clearly smart and ambitious and I also think your potential is better spent in something other than mindless money-making. Looking back on your life, you’ll be grateful for having that realisation at 24.
