B52s don't drop bombs anymore. They can operate as a standoff platform for cruise missiles that have ranges of1500 or more miles. B52s would be an easy target for modern anti-aircraft systems these days. Its big, sub-sonic, with poor maneuverability. I should know. I flew the B52G in the sky's over Vietnam in the 70s.

Not in a way that it could evade sams. No, the only B52 model still flying is the 'H'. The upgrades you've read about to its avionics. Its airframe, wings, empennage are essentially the same as it was delivered to the air force in the late 50s and early 60s. Even the new engines they are putting on the 'H' have the same 17,000 pounds of thrust as the TF33s they are replacing. But its take off roll will be the same because the plane was built for the thrust of those engines. Its airborne performance remains the same because the airframe and wings were stressed for those engines, for that thrust. What will change for the BUFF is fuel efficiency meaning fewer air to air refuelings and longer missions for the crew. Its receiving the 'J' designator as in B52J, because of the new electronic packages and not because of its new engines. And the electronics will allow it to become a fearsome adversary with its standoff cruise missile platform role in the future. But it will still weigh 488,000 pounds at liftoff after the same takeoff roll as it always had.

4:53 This is a training sortie, otherwise the aircraft wouldn't have left the handstand with the red flagged safety pins still attached to the drop tanks under the wings. There is no way a F-15 would be taking off into a combat area without the ability to jettison the fuel tanks if needed. In a combat situation the first thing the pilot will do is get rid of those highly flammable 750 gallon drop tanks.
