They had pre-selector gear boxes. Basically double clutch but with a driver rather than ECU to do the change 😅😅

Proper bus used to ride these to work for my 1st job in 70's oh and school age job at Safeway Streatham, always RT coming home.

The Maintenance of the Headway...reminded me of Magnus Mills book of that title.....getting booked by the Road Inspectors for running early....almost better to run late :-)

I used to drive an AEC Regent three, OKM317. It's completely different from a modern bus, but I loved driving it.

You were on a 74 heading west through the city, I did wave at you but didn’t want to wave too much coz I didn’t want you to stop as I was waiting for a different bus! I only come to London once a year from Dorset for my companies Xmas party so quite amazed I saw you out of the 1000s of buses! 😂

I remember RT1702 passing out family home in Shirley Road, Croydon many times on Rte 54 in 1966.........happy days!

These RT s would still be fun to ride on , these days . But the new electric ones , like on the 119 route , are pretty impressive too ! Also , I’d bring back bus conductors , either part time , or voluntary? ( to help the poor old and young bus drivers ) ❤

RT 1702 used to be kept at catford bus garage as a preserved vehicle and was the bus before the routemaster.

Len, not at all a surprise you influenced some young guys to become bus drivers. You're so warm and welcoming without the b.s. Record number of 54s I ever saw together back in the day was 5 westbound when it went as far as Croydon. The Beckenham short turn in those days in that direction was the War Memorial. the Junction being used for scheduled peak shorts from West Croydon. This was all well before Tramlink, of course. Buses on the 54 and 227 weren't allowed stand time at the W.M., round the roundabout and back again, all in crew days of course. My 227 record spot was 6 running together when I worked at Beckenham Library.

It does look nice. I travelled on the old Citaros for hours on a weekend in october and filmed the old buses, so as to compare when I eventually travel on these new tram buses.

A modern day trolleybus, but without the wires.

They look OK. There appears to be a lot of light and good digital boards with stop info. I couldn't really see the armrests they looked curved and not very supportive for customers that may require some support when standing. Love your vids. Only started watching a my husband had just been offered bus driver training, but I watch them just for fun for myself 😂 and yes I should get out more and I will when I have my family tfl pass😂

When i was at go-ahead there. Were going to bring them in to service that was two years ago it's taken them that long to get on the road spent a lot money on them especially charging point at Crystal palace 🚎🚋🚌

Yes, TfL has decided bus passengers are lower priority than cyclists, who are mainly male, white and below 40 years in age. Toronto has just scrapped many cycle lanes as they are holding up traffic. I've nothing against cycling, but when you have MS like I do and are in your 70s it's not an option! Sadiq Khan only ever caught a bus for PR purposes during his first day in office.

Are you instructed on the route to take back? I'd have followed the 161 out of Chislehurst Village, then the 124 to Grove Park and the 136 to avoid potential Bromley traffic problems, but then I'm just an armchair driver! Your route may be quicker in practice. There's a couple of roads there in Chislehurst I've never even seen an oos bus on. Keep up the good work!

This is the norm for us with the company I drive for, we have a decker on one of our school runs which is 75% narrow country lanes, luckily they don’t trust me to run that route yet, but hope to god they never do, I’d rather stick to my city work
