ICC Kingston 2023 11 06 River mouth and surrounding area from Dolphin Centre car park
ICC drone footage of the mouth of the River Spey looking from Tugnet towards Kingston and Garmouth. Videoed at low tide on a NEEP TIde (2.2 metres as opposite to less than 1 metre.) Note how gravel bar on east side of the mouth has been pushed into the river and a large wide mouth developed. Gravel bar off the mouth has changed shape in recent months and no longer attached to the beach on the Kingston side. Gravel bar running from mouth inland on the Kingston side is very narrow and low. In a Spring Tide backed by a north or northeasterly wind, sea will be pushed in towards Shorey Road, Golf Course and up the Kingston Burn. Large areas of which was mud flats used by over wintering birds now covered with gravel. Less feeding grounds left!

I spent two days there with tow of my daughters (and a son-in-law). I wondered why the railroad was built up so much. I wonder no more! Thank you. th-cam.com/video/p7XTHa3s760/w-d-xo.html

Really needs the hard banking removed where the car is parked, the river really needs to run where the track is to reach the old channel that runs to the east

Hi--thanks for sharing this. My great-grand-parents and their children lived here. An O/S 1870 map names the location "Mills of Garmouth." An O/S 1977 map says "Ross House." The location has a history of fires and flooding. My research describes the location: Meal mill and mill croft - 1848. Flour mill. Woolen manufactory, weaving house, warehouse (fire 1861). Farm steading - Queenshaugh (fire 1900). Then rebuilt again. I was in the house once in the 1990s.

I was brought up in Garmouth, left in 1966 and returned again in 2011. Over past 20 years River Spey has moved 600 yards westwards into this area. Since this footage was taken in 2022, Ross House was set on fire by a vandal and has had to be demolished. River continues to eroded westwards. Some of the trees in the foreground are now washed out. The Speymouth Environmental Partnership has been set up to try and have the river guided back to its former channel opposite what was Ross House.

The house was condemed 7 years ago as the owner Molly Duncan did not get the roof fixed. An internal wall collapsed. The machines from the woolen mill were removed over 100 years ag0 and went to Johnstons Mill in Elgin. Ross House was boug back to renovate. river was 250 yards away. then Due to botched works in 1995 the river worked over 600 yards westwards to where it is today. Innes Community Council of which I am a member has been fighting for years to get work done to put the river back eastwards. If that does not happen 10 houses in Lower Grmouth are at severe risk of being washed away. We are setting up a limited company to push for the works.

@@innescommunitycouncilmoray63 Thank you again for this information. It is sad when a place is lost to neglect. Though the Spey seems to keep retaking what it wants. The same happens in the states. The decision makers fail. My Dad was a civil engineer. He shared many stories of inept people promoted beyond their abilities. Good luck to you. May your efforts bring positive results. I have copies of Skene (Skeen) obituaries. Every one mentions flooding or fires or both. I will follow your updates. Have a great summer.
