Explore Sydney [00.00 - 00.45] Sydney is the largest city in Australia. It is located on the east coast of New South Wales and is also the oldest city in the country. Any trip to Australia has to include time in Sydney, as it is one of the biggest cultural and tourist centers in the country. The metropolitan feel of the city is like no other. Sydney has a unique mix of historical sites, impressive architecture, fun beaches, and nightlife. From a visit to the iconic Sydney Opera House to spending a day at the beautiful Bondi Beach, Sydney is a place that has it all. [00.50 - 01.01.37] The best time to visit Sydney is between October and March, as long as you avoid the holiday months in the middle. Sydney enjoys a generally warm and sunny climate year-round. During the Australian winter months of June, July, and August, high temperatures will only hit mid-60F or 15-20C. Sydney and the rest of the country define summer and winter by these fluctuations but the reality is even in the coldest months you can still enjoy a trip to the beach! Rainfall is light and doesn’t vary much from month to month. Summer weather starts in October, and so do the tourist crowds. These crowds are especially high in December and early January when schools are out for the holidays. [01.39 - 02.07] Getting around Sydney is easy and affordable. All public transportation options in Sydney operate on the Opal Card system. You can buy a card at any train station as well as several retail stores throughout the city. You need to load money onto it and then replenish/top up the amount on the card as you need it. Your Opal Card will work on all the trains, light rails, buses, and ferries. [02.14 - 02.33] Sydney’s location on a harbor is what makes it a top destination. Every aspect of the city is anchored in its connection to the water. The harbor is what brought the city into existence due to the need to facilitate shipping, but it is the beauty of the harbor that makes modern-day Sydney unforgettable. [03.12 - 03.38] You can do so many things in Sydney. Some of them are as follows: Walk along Circular Quay to the Opera House while enjoying street performances. They have regular Aboriginal Street performers near Circular Quay. [03.41 - 04.04] Visit the Sydney Opera House, the sail-like architectural highlight of the city. This building is the most internationally recognizable landmark of the city. Visiting the Opera House is worth it just for the views and the pictures, but you can also see a performance there. Everything from traditional Opera through modern musicals is put on at the venue. [04.05 - 05.08] Walk Across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, commonly referred to as The Coat hanger due to its arch shape. The bridge goes across the Sydney Harbour. The Opera House, Sydney Harbour, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge combined make the classic and recognizable cityscape view of Sydney. Rail and car traffic use the bridge, but it can also be walked across. Doing so will give you great picture-taking opportunities as you’re able to look back at the city from out in the harbor. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If walking is too easy you can join an organized group that scales the bridge! Tours are available in which you can climb along the arch to the summit of the bridge. The ‘climb’ is a long and steep staircase. But due to the potential for wind and rain, all climbers are secured to the structure with a wireline. These tours can be pricey but are well worth it for the view you’ll get from the top. Just be aware that the experience is not for the faint of heart! [05.12 - 05.44] Take a ferry trip to Manly. Sydney is famous for its ferries. You can take a ferry trip using the Opal card. Taking a ferry trip to Manly Beach from Circular Quay will allow you to enjoy the majestic Opera House and beautiful scenery from the sea. In Manly, you can just chill out, visit the aquarium, or just have a nice lunch in one of the many restaurants Manly has to offer. [05.57 - 06.14] Walk around the Domain and The Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. Alternative to No. 5, you can start one hour before sunset. This way, you can end your way. You can also have a picnic in the gardens near the Opera House. [07.22 - 08.52 Visit the Queen Victoria Building. The Queen Victoria Building or the QVB is a heritage-listed late-nineteenth-century building located at 429 to 481 George Street in the Sydney central business district. The building was constructed between 1893 and 1898. It was officially opened on Thursday 21 July 1898. It is 30 meters wide by 190 meters long. The building consists of four main shopping floors. The top three levels have large openings. These openings allow natural light from the ceiling to illuminate the lower floors. The building consists of a basement, ground, and two main upper floors with additional levels in the end pavilions. Much of the tilework, especially under the central dome, is original, and the remainder is in keeping with the original style. Underground arcades lead south to Town Hall railway station and north to the Myer building. The building is bounded by George, Market, York, and Druitt Streets. Originally it was designed as a marketplace, used for a variety of purposes. [09.28 - 09.47] The domes were built by Ritchie Brothers, which also built trains, trams, and farm equipment. [10.30 - 10.50] Visit Pitt St Mall. Pitt Street is located in the heart of The Sydney CBD. It boasts retail centers Myer, David Jones, Glasshouse, Sydney Arcade, Westfield Sydney, Mid City Shopping Centre, and The Strand Arcade. [11.17 - 11.33] Pitt Street is located in the heart of The Sydney CBD. It boasts retail centers Myer, David Jones, Glasshouse, Sydney Arcade, Westfield Sydney, Mid City Shopping Centre, and The Strand Arcade. [15.13 - 16.08] Similar to QVB, The Strand Arcade is also heritage-listed. It is located at 195-197 Pitt Street. The Strand Arcade was designed by John B. Spencer, assisted by Charles E. Fairfax. It was built from 1890 to 1892 by Bignell and Clark. The arcade extends 104 meters between George and Pitt Streets with a basement originally containing shops reached by stairs in the ground floor concourse. It has three stories which consist of an enclosed arcade on each side of a concourse. When opened in 1892, the arcade was said to be the very latest in shopping center designs and was described as, "The finest public thoroughfare in the Australian colonies". [17.28- 18.17] Walk around and have a picnic in Hyde Park. Hyde Park is a beautiful sprawling park in the middle of the city’s business district. You can buy sandwiches and drinks and spend an afternoon lounging in the grass. Hyde Park is the oldest public parkland in Australia. It is approximately 16 hectares in size. It is squared at the southern end and rounded at the northern end. It is bordered on the north by St. James Road and Prince Albert Road and on the south by Liverpool Street, and on the west by Elizabeth Street, on the east by College Street. [21.11 - 21.35] Tour St. Mary’s Cathedral, an impressive and daunting cathedral that holds the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney for the city’s Catholic population. You can stroll through the church if it is open, as long as you are sensitive to any religious services taking place. Tours are also available if you want to get the full historical perspective of the building.
