Jack and Rick Take on Home Depot Requiring All Employees to Work in its Stores
Jack Kelly and Rick Chen react to Home Depot's policy requiring all corporate employees to work eight hours at one of its retail stores every quarter.
Rick discusses the practicality and what it'd be like to have senior executives, remote workers or people who don't have any day-to-day understanding of retail policy or frontline experience working. Jack compares the policy to an episode of "Undercover Boss" and wonders if the company can improve its supply chain and corporate policies to be a more effective, profitable company. Finally, Rick and Jack reflect on the potential impact the policy could have on Home Depot customers and the company's bottom line.

Sometimes the toxic person is the only one who's right and requires a new team. Look at Altman, he ends up being the last man standing with the data of his foes to train on. 😅

Thanks for hosting this discussion - really interested to see how this plays out. I've been a little disappointed in the interviews/pundit takes on the bill so far. No one is really honing in on the fact that the bill is explicitly for non exempt employees. My concern there is that many NE employers are now going to be incentivized to offer fewer hours to those on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum to avoid overtime wages. Whether that results in hiring more people at a lower average hour allocation, or lower capacity/service, in its current form this bill on its own is going to screw over the most stressed section of our employed population. I'm thinking of retail, supermarkets, and other low skill jobs which can't really be automated-away. These people don't have disposable income to inject back into the economy, and I don't see any protections in place which would protect one's total take home pay post-implementation (that wouldn't be feasible, anyway). I'm glad you hit on this at the end of the interview, and the congressman admitted this is a major gap. I don't think his justification is one which the public would like. Realistically, if someone's hourly wage remains static but the definition of FT reduces to 32, they're at risk of realizing a 20% reduction in gross pay. That's not enough freed up capacity to pick up another job to offset, nor should legislation force people in to that position.

I've been incredibly disappointed by the lack of true curiosity or interests by interviewers until you hit on this at the end. They all show their lack of comprehension by conflating it with white collar 4 day work weeks, only aiding the inauthentic spin being put on this to gather support from under-40 professionals. This will have little affect on the vast majority of Blind's target users, and I hope the media starts to do a better job of breaking it down in simple terms so people actually understand the proposal

Google has proven it's got some very senior people more than happy to sacrifice truth and company success for their own agenda. There are plenty of alternatives to their Browser, their search, their phone, their suite, their, Cloud, their AI... it's easy to replace the majority of Google in your life and as they continue to demonstrate the transition to this distortion, like mass media, it's time to consider whether it's worthy of your time, trust and money.

This is an incredibly helpful interview - thank you! The perspective on EOY/Q1 job postings and an org's need is one of those "common sense, but hadn't given it much thought until I heard it here" things. Also really appreciate Bonnie's perspective on AI Recruiting tools. I know a few people who have brought these solutions to-market, and share the caution that it's not an end-all solution and can lead to a lot of unintended and negative biases. Bravo. As one who relocated to a city with less of an attractive job market during COVID and the Remote work surge, now being a victim of tech layoffs, it's incredibly rough out there. 85% of all openings which are aligned with my career goals are On-Site/Hybrid in Seattle, SF, DC, Austin, NYC. It's absolutely maddening that quality talent (which could be had at a better price point than those inflated markets) is blocked-out due to poor corporate real estate strategies and those local gov't pressuring companies to get butts back in seats. One data point I'd question: the # of incremental (or total, for that matter) jobs posted in the US. I'm sure the proportionality works, but LI's messy approach to allowing individual job postings for the same role across markets leads to gross overstatement of job volume across much of the tech and consulting sectors. Really wish they would at least require all 'duplicate' postings be tied back to a single requisition #, and at the very least LI Premium and Recruiter account members had an option to de-dupe them for their search or analytics.

A MUCH better discussion point is how ALL major American cities are having these problems. San Francisco/Bay Area is not the only region suffering. Yea I heard y'all bring up Seattle and NY but repeatedly bringing up San Francisco weaken your insight. The whole of tech doesn't live there. What's going on in Austin? Atlanta? Chicago? DC? 🙄
