Accessibility 101 for the Blind and Visually Impaired: What is an Accessible Pedestrian Signal?
Have you ever wondered about those beeping sounds you hear at some crosswalks or seen people press buttons before crossing the street? These signals, known as Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), are vital tools for people with visual impairments, helping them safely navigate intersections. But what exactly are they, how do they function, and do they always work as intended? Let’s explore the basics of APS and how they enhance safety.
💡 In This Episode:
*Accessible Pedestrian Signals 101:* Discover what APS devices are and how they provide vital non-visual cues to assist individuals with visual impairments at intersections.
*How APS Works:* Learn the simple, actionable steps to safely use an APS device, from finding the button to crossing with parallel traffic.
*Challenges and Solutions:* Explore what to do when APS signals are out of sync with traffic, and how O&M specialists teach alternative strategies.
*O&M Advocacy and Education:* Understand the role of O&M specialists in promoting better APS systems and teaching effective navigation techniques.

The reason for this, is because the leaders and rich, of western countries are aware that an uneducated population is easier to manipulate.

Yes, I agree with that. Unfortunately. You can look back at who founded education and why. Which illustrates your point exactly. Which is why we, as teachers, are in the prime position to change things.

I’m 20 years in and still see new teachers who are shocked at the non teaching work load including meetings -they’re just not told this before they start their degrees and they’re also not told about the short cuts and hacks to get your time back.

First impression, isn't an 8hr school day half of their awake time per day? It's only on doing my own research that I find TVI means teaching visually impaired and your stat makes more sense. Generally you don't want your audience to have to google to understand what you're trying to say. Fine though if you just want this shared among TVI instructors. If it is meant for a wider audience, well you'll get there eventually.

Thanks for the comment!! This specific clips is meant ONLY for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, who are often only with our learners 1 hour/week. Super small niche. Not everyone will resonate with it.
