FORGET ABOUT THE IC-7300 CLOCK BATTERY FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS (PART 2)
As I promise on my previous video, I did a simple experiment with LIR-2032 with simulated battery circuit of IC-7300. Turned out the experiment was not necessary, but I could confirm some facts that were obvious. It's somewhat boring video, but I'm posting it to keep my word.

    hum, from the ckt diagram I would expect the lir 2032 to actually be recharged during power on events. I don't suspect your rig to be powered down long enough to drain the drain the battery.

      Thanks for watching my video. You might be right, but the reason why I don't expect LIR2032 to be charged during my normal use of the radio (DC power supply on for a few hours on weekends) is because of the 3.3k resistor in the circuit, limiting the current 100 micro Amp only. I'm planning to discharge an extra LIR2032 that I have, down to somewhere around 2.5 V and then supply DC 3.3V with 3.3k resistor in line. I'm gonna leave it ON for several hours and see the results. You may already know the result, but I need to test it to know. I will share the result later for those who are curious like me. Thanks again and 73

    Hello, as far as i know a cr2032 is a non rechargeable battery. Would it be safer to put a diode in series to block the chargingvoltage?

    • @va3be_radio
      @va3be_radio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello First of all, sorry for making you confused. I didn't use CR2032, but used LIR2032 rechargeable battery. I don't expect IC-7300 clock battery circuit will charge the replaced LIR2032, because the original IC-7300 clock circuit charging voltage and current is way too low (3.1V, 0.03mA max) for LIR2032 to be charged. It's been 2 years since I replaced my IC-7300 clock battery, so I'm planning to make a follow-up video soon. If I have time, I will include an experimental video whether the non-rechargable CR2032 can handle 3.1V 0.03mA charging current or not, just for fun. I would definitely use a diode if I chose to use CR2032. Thanks for watching my video 73

      @va3be_radio 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Thanks for watching my video and leaving comments. I believe there might be many OMs having the same question as you do, because I had the same question/concern. When I started this mod, I first checked schematics and data sheets for all related parts. As far as I remember, all parts are SAFE up to 4.5V, maybe more, if I'm not wrong. 3.9V is in good safe zone. Charging? I DON'T expect LIR2032 to be charged by the IC-7300's charging circuit, but used LIR2032. Why? Because I checked CR2032 (Not LIR2032) data sheets first, and it seemed ok use, as one of the data sheet noted that it's ok with little charging DC current (I don't remember the exact value), but since so many companies making CR2032, I chose not to use CR2032, but to use LIR2032 which is ok with IC-7300 charging current no matter what brand it is. With the capacity of LIR2032, it will be ok for many many years without charging, probably I don't have to worry about it till I move to the next radio. It's been only about 1.5 years since I did this mod, so it's too early to say everything is good, but so far ZERO issues with me. AS I MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS VIDEO, IT IS JUST FOR YOUR REFERENCE ONLY. PLEASE CHOOSE WHICHEVER WAY YOU THINK IS RIGHT. Thanks again and 73

    • @va3be_radio
      @va3be_radio 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Dennis Thanks for watching my video and leaving nice comments here. I'm using MFJ-1708B which I believe is the previous version of 1708 SDR, but basically the same. I've used G4HUP 70MHz IF tapping board on my old IC-746 long before and used RTL-SDR DONGLE successfully. I don't know the details about FT-100 IF tapping, but you might want to use fine soldering iron tip with magnifying glasses. Nowadays there are many SDR dongles capable of directing sampling, so I started to use MFJ-1708B. One little benefit of using this SDR switch is that sometimes you just turn on your computer start monitoring QSO without the radio, which I do frequently. Whichever way you go, it will make FT-100 much nicer. I hope you get great success with your FT-100 Thanks and 73

      Hello Thanks for watching my video I'm not an expert, but here's my opinion. The charging current on the original clock battery BT-381 is only about 0.025 mA plus minus. Meaning that using none-rechargeable battery CR2032 should not be a problem. I could not find the data sheet that I read before, but it said applying little current won't cause any issue on CR2032. I don't remember the exact number that CR2032 can handle, but 0.025 mA is way below the number as far as I remember. BUT, I would use a diode to block charging current, if I had to use none rechargeable battery, just in case. Again, I'm not an expert, so please take my thoughts as a reference. Thanks and 73 PS. BT-381 is only 1mAh and CR2032 is 210mAh, so it will last so many years that you can forget bout it.

    Odd that Icom did not do this in the factory - doing it in bulk, it would have added less than $ 1 to the build cost. I still love Icom though, I have 2 x 7300 and 1 x 705

      I think everyone incluing me has the same question like you. We will never understand their business strategy, but when IC-7300 was first released, ICOM sold well over 20,000 units immediately. That's what 7~8 years ago? I assume ICOM has sold IC-7300 well over 100,000 units now, if not more. So even $1 maybe too much ? I don't know

    Excellent work mate, and as you indicated, a "go-box" is often not meant to be portable but transportable, and also secures the equipment in a "safe box".

      Thanks Steve for your great comments and I appreciate your time leaving comments. Although I agree 100% with your thoughts about 'Go Box', there are people who have different definition in their mind. Mostly those who frequently go out for portable operation, and I understood their thoughts. That's one reason I started to call mine as a Transportable ham shack. Thanks again Steve for your nice comments and 73

    Nice video. Can you power on FT100 via cat cable without the faceplate?

    • @va3be_radio
      @va3be_radio ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my video. According to FT-100 opcode command chart on the manual, it seems it's not possible to turn the power on via CAT control. I am not sure whether those opcode commands on the manual are all that's available for FT-100 or there are more command that's not written on the manual. You may want to send an email to Yaesu to confirm this matter. Thanks again 73

    At the age where don't have steady enough hands to do this and the local Hamshop won't replace the battery and told me to send it back to Icom. Bad design to have this happen in the two years since I purchased it new.

    I have watched a few HamBox set ups recently, Memorial Day 2023 on Ham Radio 2.0, plus some Canadians doing g the same boxes all great DIY Kits. I thought your kit was fine, but for transport you leave the LCD monitor on top, was the only thing I could moan about,hope it's packed safe when on the road. I got me a backpack 🙂 73's from Nw Uk 👋

      You're absolutely right. Leaving monitor on top of the case is not good, and I will have to come up with a brilliant idea to make it hidden inside the case for transportation. I will upload a video, when I find a way to integrate in the box. Thanks for your comment 73

    • @va3be_radio
      @va3be_radio ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you're questioning about, but On FT-100 Spec, 100W HF, 50W VHF, 20W UHF The actual output is a little higher on my FT-100 I use KLM140 VHF linear amp, which I modified to use VHF FM and SSB I use this amp mostly for VHF SSB, and I can go up to 180W when needed Your question answered? 73

    What did you use as ''variable speed cooling fan''? It has no noticeable RFI? 73!

    • @va3be_radio

      Thanks for watching my video I used PWM controller for fan speed control. I had 2 different PWM controllers and one made very bad RFI on transmit audio, but another one created zero RFI. I bought it from a local hamfest long ago. No brand name or model number marked on it. 73
