I would think twice before I used anything attributed to Charles Dickens in a devotional context. He was a real scoundrel, and not only in his treatment of women. Having researched the origins of "A Christmas Carol" (i.e., in connection with other research), I've found a great deal of evidence that he plagiarized it from an American couple. Ironically, *they* were real Christians, of the esoteric variety. Their names were Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and his wife Abby Poyen Whittier. Abby wrote the spiritual elements--and to her, all of the paranormal aspects were originally authentic. Which is to say, Dickens secularized what was originally a spiritualist redemption story, into a mere "Ghost Story of Christmas." Although I haven't studied in so much depth, I think that "David Copperfield" was originally someone else's real-life memoirs, which Dickens personalized by throwing in elements reflecting his own life history. So actually, you are probably not quoting Dickens at all, but rather the now-forgotten original author of that story, as well.

Thank you for your input Mr. Sakellarios. The book I am using for these devotions is a product of Thomas Nelson and their Devotional Classics Series. Each day includes very brief segments of a work attributed to Charles Dickens but the heart of the meditational thoughts come from Jean Fischer. Mr. Dickens' life is not held up as an example to follow. Therefore, his lifestyle or life choices are not really influential in these daily devotions. Thanks again.

Jesus could have easily protected Peter and not allowed Satan to sift him, but Jesus had a higher goal. He was equipping Peter to strengthen his brothers (Luke 22:32). Not only did Peter strengthen the other disciples, but he became the pillar of the early church in Jerusalem, exhorting and training others to follow the Lord Jesus (Acts 2). - Earlier, Jesus had warned His disciples as well as us today, -“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first” (John 15:18; Matthew 24:9). Peter quickly found he wasn’t nearly as bold and courageous as he had proclaimed. In fear he denied the One who had loved him.

Jesus utters the words “Peace, be still” in Mark 4:39. “Peace, be still” is the command that Jesus used to calm a nighttime storm on the Sea of Galilee. After rebuking the storm, Jesus issues a rebuke to the disciples as well, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). -Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

But I am struggling with some Sins that I honestly don’t know how to quit I hate my Sins But I genuinely don’t know how to stop them Am I still Saved because of my faith in Jesus or am I Not Saved because of my Sins? Dear Monica, Your question and your struggle reminds me of Paul's words in Romans 7. He refers to the struggle that you and many people have. We know the right thing to do but we do not do it and we know the thing we should not do but still do it. He cries out eventually, "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?" and the answer is this....."Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" We are not saved by our works because we cannot save ourselves by our own righteous works (Titus 3:5), but when we fully believe the truths that you said you believe in, we must put sin behind us. Paul deals with that then in Romans 8. It is always a spiritual fight that we have, but in His grace and mercy and in His patience, God will help us when we call on His name. Read 1 John 1:1-10 and see this struggle mentioned again. The key is confession of sin and fellowship with Jesus and other believers. I would also add, when you know the temptations are rising that you ask the Holy Spirit for help, maybe reach out to another believer to talk to, and look at the sin before you and hate it because you know that it was our sin that sent Jesus to the cross. Blessings to you Monica.

I liked the prayer John shared : Enjoyed that he included the ancient "Gloria Patri" that was sang to confirm the belief in the Trinity: "Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen."

In my dad's later days of this life, every so often he would stare straight ahead and say "Whoa, Whoa" as if astonished by seeing something. I can't help but think he was getting a glimpse at what was to come...I won't know till I meet up again with him ,when I'm sure we'll be doing a lot of " wow-ing and whoa-ing" as you mentioned along with the Hallelujahs!!!

  • @rodneyfrost4073

Wow, that was really good, I loved hearing the thoughts about a bath versus the foot washing...and then the part about serving really spoke to me and reminded me to not grow weary in service as it's now been over 100 days changing dads clothes and washing him up every morning since he can't dobit for himself....brought a new perspective for me that it's a privilege to serve him in this way
