Hey my name is Dennis Timmerman. I'm a videographer in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I have found so much knowledge and inspiration on TH-cam and I really want to give back and contribute! This channel is where I plan on taking you on the adventures I'm lucky enough to be a part of and hopefully teach and inspire along the way.
HLG vs FLOG 2: What Is the BEST Picture Profile For Video on FUJIFILM Cameras?
What is your GO TO Profile that You use for Video on Your FUJIFILM Camera? In this video, I tested HLG and F Log 2 side by side, and I personally prefer the HLG. I like the colors (especially skin tones), and it's not quite as noisy. The F Log 2 has more dynamic range, and more latitude in post, but is a bit noisier and the skin tones always need a little more finessing to get right (at least that's been my experience, and the finessing is always pretty painless and the footage doesn't break).
In my opinion, you can't go wrong shooting in either HLG, F Log, or F Log 2. Get your white balance pretty close and exposure dialed in, and you're gonna get nice images. Everything in this video was shot on the FUJIFILM XS20, except for the B Roll of the XS20. All of the B Roll of the XS20 was shot on the FUJIFILM XT4, in HLG.
The XS20 is an impressive camera for the price. In my next video, I'll be pairing it up with the Blackmagic VideoAssist 5" Monitor to compare shooting in B Raw side by side with HLG (and maybe F Log 2 too).
Drop your thoughts, what you like to shoot with, and if you plan on doing some of your own testing after watching this in the comments below. I wanna hear from YOU!

Seeing as most of us are watching in REC 709 and watching on TH-cam after it has been crushed - it is not exactly very convincing. This is the problem with this sort of video,. No one really sees the difference even between watching videos recorded with our without log. You guys seem to waste so much time and effort, where no when can axctually see the differences. They aren't too bothered anyhow, and the story and content matters way more than any of this stuff. Following on that - it has been shown that audio is more important in general that video when viewing content.
I mean - I have seen people who don;t even realise that when they are watching TH-cam, it auto-detects the bandwidth available and reduces what they are watching has been reduced to 1080p or 720p,
And then people also get wrapped out in write out speeds of memory cards - and a lot of people don't even render out anywhere close to that, as it is unwatchable at the same rate they took the footage in. It is why the whole camera industry is a bit of a con. Just by a camera you like,e concentrate on taking the footage you want, and don't bog yourself down with watching endless videos on colour grading. Those are my thoughts anyhow :D
Must have missed it but what do you prefer especially for uploading to TH-cam?
To be honest you can't go wrong with either profile. If you want to color grade more, I'd go with F Log 2. If you don't want to color grade, HLG doesn't take much work at all to make look good.
@@dennistimmerman605Video plan would be to throw dehanser on top for the more filmic look so no color grading other than that.
@@adventuresofjandk not a bad plan. I have no experience with dehancer but I'm sure I'll give it a try one day!
I hope if I just listen to this enough times, it’ll all make sense to me 😅
Might take more than this video for it all to make sense, but it's a start!
20:57 she sounds cute
I haven't had a chance to do any testing. Sorry for the late response.
All good! Any other questions on Fuji Cameras?
@@dennistimmerman605Video no not at the moment. I need to get in creating with my 2 Fujis. I feel like Fuji content from smaller creators aren't getting as many views as they used to.
Turkish subtitle please
I wish I knew how to do that!
my left ear enjoyed this
Haha I think it's time to do an update to this video so both your ears can enjoy
Does Fuji has HLG2 or HLG3 like Sony ZV1?
No hlg 2 or 3. It's pretty much just f log, f log 2, hlg, and film sims
HLG to me brings closer to natural (as one can see) colors. Plus you can work in wide gamut and BT.2020 color
Ofcourse HLG İS better because its 10 bit color profile and color space reg 2020 but for flog is 8 bit and bt 709 its make big different and l reccomend you can upload HLG video for youtube support HDR HLG
They are both rec 2020 and 10 bit
Yuck, those first shots have visible sharpening and way too much saturation crushing all the range of the colors.
Yeah thanks for the input dude
@@dennistimmerman605Video sorry I didn't mean to sound mean. It was just that minute or two.
@@XtianApi haha are you sure? It's all good
i live in spain and i shoot mainly real estate so would you recommend hlg for interior shots? we get tons of light through out the day and i feel flog and the DR is just isnt enough. Havent tested the HLG yet...
Have you done any testing yet???
Can we adjust minimum ISO on X-T4 when using HLG ? thank you
As far as I know you cannot. Base iso is 1000 for hlg. A variable nd filter is a must if shooting outside for sure.
@@dennistimmerman605Video tks for your comment! nice video
Small world. Made me kinda home sick seeing some locations I've shot before.
Great video. I've been curious myself about using HLG instead of F-Log. I don't know why I liked the F-Log sky over the HLG but, HLG everywhere else looked clean. New sub here.
Have you done any testing yet???
As far as I can see, you have stopped producing content for youtube, but I would like to say that your videos are very useful.
Thank you! Are there any fujifilm questions you would like to see answered on the channel?
@@dennistimmerman605Video actually i want to use my x-t30 as a webcam but i haven't been able to. My pc doesnt see it as a webcam. It is working on zoom or discord. But is not working on windows camera application :S
@@snaanarchielago7396 check out a channel called Pal2Tech. He probably has a video on that!
@@dennistimmerman605Video I watched his video. He has done it on mac. I have windows :)
Both are gross IMHO. Think I would prefer non-log out of camera with no log!! I mean how "orange" did you want the bollards to look - I am sure they did not look like that IRL. Proves my thoughts that you are better off sticking with what the camera does - too many people think they "have" to use log formats, just because they are there, but ultimately the camera has better eyes than average or even professional photographers/videographers. I will therefore give all log formats a pass - thanks for ccnfirming my original thoughts on this matter :)
Glad I can help you reach a conclusion!
I think the images look quite nice. Maybe you have the brightness turned up too much on your screen? Color is so hard to get right. The problem with Fuji is that there is no one 'SOOC' - it has multiple choices of profiles to choose from. Do you go with Eterna or Provia? Classic Chrome or Hi-Neg
The log and hlg are actually greatly useful for shadow and highlight recovery and is very much so a part of “what the camera does.” Regular video would not be able to recover highlight and shadows as well as something like Flog. This doesn’t mean you have to use flog for every occasion, people definitely over use it… but it is useful. That orange you’re talking about is simply the super oversaturation of colors done by the editor in post. It had nothing to do with what the video format itself did.
Your audio only comes through the left speaker.
I think the HLG had more potential. But the saturation kinda killed it for me. Everything orange was bleeding
This didn’t even upload to YT as HDR.
Video quality you have doesn't look like HLG compare to other people. The best one: th-cam.com/video/sZzCGga0lLs/w-d-xo.html
Yeah thanks
Your mic only plays on the left ear. Music plays on both.
Very informative video. 0:51 - what’s the chances of catching 2 ACE trucks crossing paths lol. I liked your video and subscribed to your channel!
