River Discharge
KEY TERMS:
Approach segment: Shows the discharge of the river before the storm.
Peak rainfall: The maximum amount of precipitation during a storm.
Peak discharge: The maximum amount of water in a river after a rainfall event.
Rising limb: Results from a rapid increase in rainwater reaching the river, gives an indication of how fast water is reaching the channel and represents the amount of water rising in the channel.
Falling limb: Some rainwater is still reaching the river, but in decreasing amounts through throughflow and groundwater flow.
Lag time: The amount of time between peak amount of rainfall and peak discharge in the river.
Base flow: Releases groundwater, maintaining the river’s flow during periods of low precipitation.
Storm flow: The discharge attributed to a single storm, both surface and subsurface flow.
Bank full discharge: When a river’s water level reaches the top of its channel and further increase will lead to flooding of the surrounding land.
