Why Andrew Carnegie opened 3500 free libraries
Very inspirational story of how young fifteen years old Andrew Carnegie who at the time had little to no money for books, gained access to new knowledge thanks to colonel James Anderson's free library. And how later Carnegie paid it forward when he became the richest man in the world.

Thanks 🐈
I grew up in Pittsburgh and was told by my grandmother who grew up in North Braddock that we have so many libraries because Carnegie felt guilty at the end of his life and wanted to get into heaven so he left everything to the people he made that wealth off of.
Fake...found all...stolen land .
Thanks
but, only for BOYS!! We're still trying to SMASH THE PATRIARCHY!!! Imagine how much more "ahead" humanity would be if females were HALF of every consideration for funding, knowledge, rights, etc.

One of the best things ever ....
He is a legend to me.. What a great man he was.
Well he did leave a great legacy. I often visit one of those libraries he built. It's couple blocks from where I live.
@@lampshade5449 I’ll wager, it is a beautiful piece of architecture.
Great video, thanks!
You’re welcome 👍 Thanks for watching
Fantastic efforts
Thank you
Cool history lesson! I'd heard of Pavlov but never Thorndike--maybe this shows my pro-dog, anti-cat biases! :)
Haha 😁 that might be the case. But it probably because they teach about Pavlov in schools while Thondike is taught only to psychology majors in college if I’m not mistaken 👍
You've got good skills, and I hope you'll keep making videos! This one starts off with a bang, revealing things about the young Carnegie I never knew! But though I gave this video a thumbs up, I think you'll get more likes if you don't lionize insanely rich men, just because they don't spend all their money on themselves. Carnegie donated a lot money, but he also ruined or even killed those around him in order to gain his fortune, then paid off politicians to give him whatever else he wanted, from high tariffs on foreign steel to National Guard troops that he could use to bust up unions, sometimes literally. He was a generous tyrant, at least compared to his fellow Gilded Age magnates, but he was still a tyrant, even if he didn't see things that way. Ironically, he once wrote that he believed that any rich man's wealth was mostly created not by labor or good planning but by the "community"--and this was the reason he felt he should give away his fortune in later life! But while he liked to give away money, he never gave people control of how it was spent. I'm sure that the steel workers whose pay he reduced by 1/5 probably disagreed with him sharply about how he redistributed their wealth, but hey, why let people vote on what services are most needed in their communities when you can just let some Scottish guy decide where to put a bunch of libraries on their behalf?
Fun fact: When Carnegie inaugurated the library of Pittsburgh there were some of his workers and their representatives invited to the event. Carnegie said to them: "You should probably think that you in the world would be better off if instead of saving this money in building a library i had it giving it back to you in wages, but let me tell you something, if I had done that you would have spent those wages in better cuts of meat, on drink, maybe on better houses... but I've given you in the community something much more important, a library".
The point is ...and IDIOTS miss thus point. The point is that NO MATTER WHAT ILL HE MAY HAVE , HE DID GOOD WITH THE LIBRARIES. People, including YOU, should look for the good in people. And ...just in case you are REALLY stupid. NONE of tge libraries would be there if it were not for him. The conclusion: 1)He did a GREAT thing. 2)Only an IDIOT would say he's bad.
