    Capo is a crutch that keeps you in the guitar ghetto.

    • @pwoods100
      @pwoods100 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not what my message was though........I just want people to understand that it's not actually a crutch, but more like a tool. And any tool can be overused, but if the capo was a crutch it would make the guitar easier to play, and when I put on a capo I still have to play the same way I would without a capo - it won't help you play better, or smoother - you still have to work at it with or without a capo. A capo is simply like using an effect, it can make any tuning sing just a bit more, or you can use it to play the same chords in any key. In any case, my point was to bring more variety to one's sound - a capo can be a plus, and depending on what your goals are, using one may not be for you. I was trying to simply point out the pro's and cons. This video I did, wasn't great by any means, and I probably communicated the concept very poorly, but hopefully I can make a better one in the future. However, if the capo really leaves you in the guitar ghetto as you call it, then that would include a whole host of A list players and music legends who use a capo. Thanks for listening! Patrick

    FYI that you can get an anthem in custom emerald orders. Just need to send them the pickup. I tried an x10, x20, and x30 last month. I’m a finger style player too. I promptly ordered a custom x30 with an anthem. Should arrive within a few weeks now.

    I did the same thing except I used two large tube sections and a single small tube section in the middle, that way the pedalboard can't slip apart. I had to take out the latches and move two panhead end screws of course.

    I am fascinated with Emerald guitars and lust after an x30. This is true even though I have a very expensive boutique 12 fret all mahogany dreadnought which I love. Yes, I can definitely hear the added spatial quality to using the two pickups - it is definitely an improvement. Do you wish you had ordered the Graphteque Ghost piezo with the K+k. Any regrets buying an Emerald? Does the carbon fibre have a warmth to its sound that might come close to mahogany?

    • @pwoods100
      @pwoods100 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! As far as the ghost piezo, no I have no regrets about getting the Anthem instead. Maybe the ghost would have sounded just as good, but I sure have no qualms about the Anthem - as that is the main pickup that really drives my sound. No regrets whatsoever about the Emerald! It's the perfect performance guitar for me, and it's beveled edges and sides make playing live so much more comfortable. I actually feel more relaxed onstage because of it. There is just something about the shape of it that does it for me. Carbon fiber has a sound all of it's own that for me, is very warm. But it's not the same type of warmth that comes from wooden guitars. It's just a different sound, and not everyone digs it and that's okay. Like I've said in the past, I still prefer my rosewood guitar for recording any day. But for the stage, I can't think of a better guitar suited for me at the moment than Emerald x20. Thanks for watching!

    I had the good fortune to see Hedges twice myself; when I saw this commentary on him, I had to give it a listen. He was a phenomenal artist - he would be playing, and go into a whirling dance, like a Sufi in an altered state. I would also like to mention how I discovered your music, Mr. Woods... Was checking out another great guitar player by the name of Eric Loy, (was looking for him cuz he's local) and he provided the link to your music. Hi there El, thanks for dropping by - I've heard of you! To answer your question - that guitar is a carbon fiber make, a company called "Journey guitars." It's actually Navy blue, not black - but the lighting in some of my videos makes it look darker. I don't play the Journey much anymore, I'm playing an Emerald x20 these days (carbon fiber company in Ireland) - in my recent videos. I use my Emerald for live and video stuff, and for studio recording - I still use my custom rosewood Donohue guitar. Cheers! Patrick

    I saw Hedges twice; both times with Leo Kottke. The first time he opened for Leo and I'd never heard of him. He was phenomenal! A few years later I saw them again; this time Leo opened for Michael. This time I knew what to expect musically, but not visually. He came out wearing what looked like blue old-time wresting tights, along with a helmet with holes in it in which his dreadlocks stuck out. So he stunned me both times!! A legend to whom every guitarist should pay homage.

    Just as a spruce topped acoustic guitar sounds vastly different from a cedar topped, I’m not surprised that the red carbon fiber sounds different from the original carbon fiber top. If they no longer sell the original then you might consider seeking a used blue-topped. Test them first before buying.

    • @pwoods100
      @pwoods100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting JJ - I did actually try the Burgundy one out before I bought it - but it was only unplugged there in the showroom at Sweetwater. I knew it sounded slightly different - but detected nothing bad at the time. Even the first try through my sound system at home - I only started to notice something was very wrong the 2nd or third time I plugged it in. Why it took my ears longer to notice it - I don't know. MY beef wasn't that the sound was different - just that it wasn't good. I emailed Journey the first day I took the guitar home and suspected it was made differently - and they got back to me. The first email I sent them all I wanted to know about was the sound and the pickup system. I still wasn't sure about returning it - I still wanted to keep it and work with it. Then when I realized the guitar wasn't going to work - I emailed them again to tell them of the situation and still haven't heard back. I'm going to be trying an Emerald soon - and that's the carbon fiber company I originally wanted to go with. There's a ton of fingerstyle players here on You Tube who play Emerald's and they all sound great - but I'm going to purchase one not assuming the outcome until I play it hard for about a week.

    I've been listening to Pierre's music for a long time. He once said in some interview that his father used to listen to Django Reinhardt and Hot Club jazz. And Pierre didn't like it at that time, he said something like "why he plays so many notes in a row?" And his dad said: "it'll come to you, you'll like it". And he likes it now. So I don't know what he meant by "When Tommy slows down, it's ok". Anyways, what I realised is that Pierre is playing like a constant changes, he doesn't spell the chord and let it just sound for a long time for example. You can see it like in "Coup dans L'eau", "If only you knew", "La Java du concessionnaire", "Wu Wei", of course irish stuff he plays and so on. More to the contrary, I think he's a lot influenced by jazz players and uses let's say fast changes or constant note changes.

    • @pwoods100
      @pwoods100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big difference between Django Reinhardt and Tommy. Yes, Django might have played a lot of notes - but not in Tommy Emanuel gunslinger style! Those are two different types of players - and even Pierre plays a lot of notes, but does it in a totally different way. I think what he was getting at, was the fact that when someone like Tommy plays fast - it's sometimes becomes muddled with "filler" notes and over-the-top "chops." I kind of get what Pierre was saying, but at the same time I love Tommy for what Tommy does - and that is to take no prisoners. That's the style of show he puts on, whether people get or they don't. And Pierre just thought that Tommy was too over the top, at least some of the time. But that's his opinion, and I asked for it - so I wasn't going to push back too much. Lol.

    People would ask me, as a guitarist with a degree in music, who are your favorite guitarists? My first would be Richard Leo Johnson, then Jimi Hendrix. I used to watch him live in Fayetteville, Arkansas and even got to open up for him at a folk concert in Fayetteville. Watching him play is like watching someone re-writing the book of anything he touches. One of the most thinking out of the box creatives I've ever experienced and one of the nicest people I've ever met. The most influential part about him for me is that he doesn't just stick with one medium for a creative outlet, he pushes himself to express it in many different artistic outlets, and that's how I do it now.

    I like your examples after your descriptions. I love seeing musicians making a song their own. You did throw me off on #4 (jolt). I would like to hear #5 examples (pro and con).

      There were a couple of items where I didn't play an example or demonstrate the technique - namely # 5 (alternate tunings) - because that's one obvious enough for most guitarists to know what I'm talking about without me going into detail, plus I felt the video was getting a tad too long by that point. But I will keep that in mind for next time...... Thanks for watching!
