It was extended to Gladstone instead of heading west. The Passaic and Delaware Railroad took over with connection to the Morris and Essex line in Summit, and the Lackawanna took control later. #metrotrails #...

I had no idea the Turner House was there... and I've lived in the area for a long time
I was just up there today and saw voltures. Man what a beautiful hike🎉
I live on Harmony brass Castle Road, right where the trail crosses. I enjoy hiking it and also love the history behind it, so thank you for making these videos!
Nice 👍
The apartments are beautiful inside! Or at least they were 10 years ago! I love that they kept the stained glass windows.
I lived 3 houses up from that bridge in '83 - '85. There used to be trails running all through the woods on either side of that bridge and there were "ruins" back in those woods too; bridge supports and a few building foundations. Always was curious as to what exactly used to be back in there. We used to swim in the creek and walked the creek bed when the zinc plant closed and the creek dried up one summer. Always wanted to go back and explore there again although looking at google maps it looks like the train tracks are gone and a lot of the area has been developed. Thanks for posting this though.... brings back a ton of memories.
Thanks for the video. I'm about to check out the low water this morning, before it rains tonight!
It was a cool town to grow up in! Had many of crazy times there. Me and my friends used to bmx those trails and built jumps wherever we could get away with it. There is a train switch trestle structure on lower second street right next to the Frenchtown inn or what used to be the Frenchtown inn. Nice video though hopefully you do more on this town.
awesome video! I grew up in Oxford and love hearing the history about it. Some thing I've noticed, near the center of the lot where you're parked, at maybe a 5 o'clock angle to where your Honda was parked, there's a small hatch in the ground that seems to be full of junk and leads to nowhere. I often wonder if that was a vent shaft for the tunnel?
Fascinating stuff. I'm from Worcester MA and there has been a restoration to the former canals there which is great history. Thanks for sharing.
I have a video stabilizer. I need to get it to you.
Found this vid by accident. Used to hike there, camp, ride dirt bikes up, oh and smoked a bit of weed. Gosh, that was nearly 50 years ago. What great memories.
I'm still smoking weed😂
What road is that? I’d like to get my Daughter there for some photos
@@joellem6448 I think I just told you on Facebook! :)
Great video. Thanks 👍😎
I wonder if the R&N can do special steam excursions through the Vosburg Tunnel in the future one day?
@@brianfalzon6739 this was R&N cosponsored. I was on board narrator.
Back in the 60s my grandparents owned a trailer home in Hutchinson, a few lots south of the Oakhurst Tavern (Hutch’s). I climbed those stairs too in 1974. Still have a few photos of the L&HR Alco Centuries running over the culvert. The dishes would rattle in their cabinets when they rolled thru
I could hardly hear the man in the red jacket, I saw him pointing to a house - but couldn't hear what the history to the area.
Nice mullein plant growing there by the bridge as well. Thank you for the videos Mike much appreciated been watching them.
There's a beautiful red shale bank house at the end of the line in Gladstone up the street. The Gladstone line goes through the beautiful former Natirar grounds before it arrives in Peapack. The 2+ mile main driveway for that estate began at the Far Hills station, which has an excellent freight depot, and serviced the former Ludlow lumberyard there. I understand the Schley family extended the Gladstone branch to the 'far hills', hence the name. Their estate is on the hill across Rt. 202, and the mountain is named for the family. Rumor has it they owned 50,000 acres. Mary Pickford filmed a movie on their estate, some of which can be seen on the right going up 512. Some say California is a beautiful state, I think they have just never been to New Jersey.
No one knows about this. Thank you!
I live in New Jersey 😂😂
I don't know if the property us still open to public, but Leamings Run Cape May also had a good amount of bamboo
AWESOME !
That area has $$$
Really nice video. Yes, the station should be preserved as it will remind many of the days when domestic industrialization was the chief priority of both business and government. This promoted job creation and economic vitality. Sadly, today it seems that exporting jobs and profit maximization due to deregulation and union busting are of greater significance.
Thank you!
Some great local history being explored on the side of the road. Keep it up!
Very interesting 🤔 😅
Do you happen to have info about the route and service pattern
@@CABOOSEBOB I just know most of where it went, now power line
@ yeah I see the power line routing, up north is where I have questions. It seems it maybe ran where the highway now does?

I was working the third trick at West End Tower the night in Summer 1967 when that thunderstorm washed out the Old Road west of the tunnel. That storm was the worst T-storm I every lived through.
how do you get to that boardwalk/deck? Do you have long. lat for the east portal?

I wonder what is going to happen when route 31 does collapse! Excellent informative video Thanks for posting this
Hi
My stomping grounds, I remember driving my car over that bridge when it was still open for vehicle traffic. I grew up in the next town over from there Bradley Gardens. Lots of memories and still local to the area.
This was very interesting, I drive along Lock Street always wondering if this is the towpath and a trail. Where is the place you parked along Lock Street to access this trail?
@@doreengramling191 yes that's it
I'll go through again.
Great to hear about the local heritage.
I've always been fascinated by the stories my father told me as a child about the roads, bridges and homes that were covered by the waters of the reservoirs Spruce Run and Round Valley. This is the first time I've heard of the Union Furnace. Very, very interesting... especially the fact it dated back to the 1700's. Your videos are greatly appreciate Mike.
Tell us about Lloyd Wescott and his famous farm there. Then go to Round Valley. I have ancestral farms under water in both, as well as Askohan.
Very cool history lesson I appreciate your sharing these videos 👍
Cool history and a nice long video to
Glad they left some track in Sept 1986. Special location. NYSW still runs thru Warwick … the old HQ of LHR

Thanks for sharing Mike, I've always wanted to investigate the turbine chamber at the plane 10 site. there are rumors at the turbine is still inside, and I know the Lee family lives in the house on the site
Sad Amazon did these places in. Long before Liberty Village the Turn Table Junction section was the place to visit! Times change!
