120 Film Format Shootout | 645 vs 6x6 vs 6x7
In the world of medium format film, three formats are the most common that we see at RFL. 6x45, 6x6, and 6x7. So we took three of our favorite cameras for a 120 film shootout! Let us know which one is your favorite!

Summer 2024 Films To Shoot - RFL Staff Picks
5:34. I'm in love! Marshmallows in a jar????? Where have you been all my life? Cool video. I've been carrying a roll of 160 around since last year. I think it's past time to load her up. What do you think of that Voigt 75? I've been wanting a longer lens for trips to places like the Grand Canyon, Zion, etc. Voigt makes some great lenses for the M bodies. Congrats to the kiddo on learning to ride w/o training wheels. Love his shirt. I've got 5-6 rolls I'll be sending to you shortly. 🙂
I'm used to using old film cameras, controlling aperture and manually focusing, so i naturally grip the 17's focus ring rather than get my fingers in frame.
Yeah, get a noritsu lab
Something like the qss 3300 series for small prints (210 by 420mm) and if you want something bigger the qss 3200 series is perfect, that can do up to 305mm or 12inches
Was it nice though
Not cool price in my city though 😮💨
holy hot mic!
The Shutter Sounds bug me a lot
You guys are so friggin awesome! Love the banter and bloopers. Heck yeah ballet John on pointe! 🩰 Impressive! 👏👏👏 😂 I hope to one day make it to FL to meet you wonderful people! Much love from Arizona! ✌️😎
My team here is making producer Paul proud again! Great job! The pocket 3 looks great but there is just something about these Sony cameras that shine. Good job! 👏 also John ballerina dancing again! 😂
Those bloopers were hilarious. I shoot all formats and really do not have any preference.
Old guy here... I was using those cameras when they first came-out on the market. It's great to see you having fun with film! The absolute best format in the world is ... (drumroll please) whatever you happen to have at that moment in time. Whatever format you have, just use it, have fun and do the best you can with what you have. Learn it, get comfortable with it -then switch to something else so, you can learn to appreciate all their fine points. Same goes for film types. Tri-X, TMX, FP5, Delta... Pick one, shoot it for a month or two then, move on to the next one. Shoot the same scenes to compare the different films. If you're shooting B&W and feel really adventurous, repeat all the experiments using different developers. D76 1:1, HC110-B, Rodinal and PMK Pyro covers all the bases for basic developers. Hint: For medium format B&W, use ISO400 films, shoot at 800 and push-process 1 stop.
Demote him to digital. Problem solved!
I prefer 6by6 the square format is always the vintage setting for myself and yea 60 degrees is t-shirt weather you Floridians have way to much fun !!!
Nice photos had by all. Lucky you getting medium format titan cameras for Christmas. I have a rolleicord but it does not take 220 film which I have several rolls of so I cannot use it unless I get a camera that will take that format.
Wow
Ummm Omit the boy from the future videos.. He had no idea what he was saying half the time and ONE photo I think he actually turned the camera into portrait mode when taking pictures of the girls. You guys should help that young boy out :).
I forgot to pay attention to the aspect ratios, but I liked the Lomochrome Purple. You guys chose a nice place to shoot.
Nice video, you guys did a great job
60 degrees is t-shirt weather here in NJ!
Us Floridians have a natural weakness to the cold….🥶
Hah hah hah…I’m in NJ and you are so right. No coat until 40.
LOVE the b-roll at the end, good show, shows you are just as 'goofy' as the rest of us.
at 7:46 a tip, for shooting a Hassy for 'selfies' use the lever on the right hand side {while looking at the film MAG, not the lens!!} this engages Mirror UP mode, so all that happens when you press the shutter button is the leaf blades move, the mirror is already out the way (like a revolver at half cock)- you need the slide out for this to work, as it half operates the shutter gear, so is subject to the same interlocks. This gives less vibration, so should give an extra margin of safety in focus, as the dof is thinner, so any movement can affect focus.
great video guys, and gals, but brie, a tip, some of those early shots have flare, a medium amount, so if you have access to a lens hood, use it, esp. in backlit situations, or as here around water [reflections]. this isn't you, just a quirk the Hassy has, it doesn't like flare, and as MOST of the carl Zeiss lenses are not multi coated, like modern glass, only the T* coating (colour fringing), NOT flare!! so us photographers need to be extra vigilant, but congrats on the pickup, a nice present; it will serve you well, PS: try that street SAVVY or Gold 200 in it, it works a treat (and gold has a beautiful colour rendition, even subtle blue tones, wow!!)- did some street 'art' worked out a treat.
Great job as usual 😀 I prefer the 6x6 because the square format has something very appealing to me. I also like the 6x9 format from my very old cameras For Briana: As I type, it's 21°F here in Quebec City. A mild temp for this time of the season 😉
Hahaha this was a fun video! I paused and made my own guesses. I was surprised Gold200 lost first place to Fuji, and that Portra800 was sooo low on the list! Poor lil Ektar, I love you little buddy! Dont be sad! I have a soft spot in my heart for Ektar I cant explain. @reformedfilmlab Can we pretty pleeease get a video for top sellers of 2024?
No Portra 800. Not off to a great start.
Bruh 😂
You should get a chemical printer. My lab has one and uses it for film and digital prints.
I hope this is someone I’ve recommended through Reddit🤣
From Xiaohongshu User THD TuoHai Darkroom, Lucky is going to release a new type of color negative film within the second quarter of 2025, and hope you can try it! thx!
None of the footage is impressive at all. Waste of time and money. Spend a few hundred on a nice used Canon 814 or similar. You could buy a Sony FX6 for that price! What a joke!
th-cam.com/users/shortsUhfxtuuas38?feature=share Here are my results with my first roll of Kodak Portra 160 35mm Film
Love that you have brought your kid along with you on the adventure. What a way to encourage him to be creative
Your son is so cute, Mike! He’s a mini-you! He’s on 2 wheels now and there’s no stopping him! Awesome camper too - great for the weekend getaway. You are right, Portra 160 is a sleeper film due to its lower iso. Priced between Gold 200 and Portra 400 120 film, it needs more “exposure” to get more sales. Your sample photos looked awesome! Great video! 🎉
Really well put, totally agree with all the things said.
I'd hardly call it underrated. Seems lots of TH-camrs use it or 400.
Super Cool and loved the blues mostly, just gorgeous and love the depth of field in some closeups of the film boxes. Would love to see this camera used with other C Mount lenses, for sure. There are some Bolex lenses and some cheap CC TV camera ones, depending on what introduces vignette or not. Also, an anamorphic adapter would be nice and working with setting up some lights around your subjects, because lighting looks awesome on film, the atmosphere becomes dreamy and if you use things like fog or smoke, ND for wide apertures. I want to buy this camera, for its features like the LCD and changeable lenses and manual exposure and everything, but it's out of my affordability but will at some point work on saving up for it.
I like you even more now that I find out you camp. Jekyll Island is a bucketlist campground for my wife and I. Great shots and video!
It really is a special place!
nice shoot, I personally shoot gold 200 and EkTar 100 (landscapes/architecture), and got to know gold WELL, thats the important point, pick a film, and KNOW it, so you can get the best out of it, even if not for 'portraits' this film gave great colours, how where the results, did you have any issues?
the PORTRA 160 is looking good with the colours, but the Street Candy, STREET SAVVY is better, the colours POP, and not being a 'pro' film, has more latitude as compare Portra, which is a pro film, but nice shots on both.
what a shame, that Leica got a better camera bag than the CONTAX, esp. as the contax is worth MORE, being a mf camera, and RARE, you should protect it more!!- like a backpack, or a small pelican case, with fitted foam. But nice the kid gets some film too, so the whole family can go shooting.
thx for your job, it was interesting, looks like 400 iso had low dynamic range ((( as result hight contrast
Portra 160 is SO slept on, and that makes me sad. I recently got several shots of the rock formations at Garden of the Gods in Illinois on my Mamiya with Portra 160. The results just boggled the mind.
“Supposedly “ lol. 160 and pro image are my top 2 🔥
I love it, that is my combo as well. Portra 160 in 120 and Pro Image 100 for 35. Great value/look to price ratio
Portra 160 in 120 format at night is an absolute chef's kiss.
Hey Mike, I actually just had my first roll of Portra 160 developed a few days ago here in Kansas City, MO. Anxious to get my scans back. It was challenging for sure as my lens could only open up to a 3.5 at it's brightest, so a handful of shots taken at 1/125 and also it was a cloudy overcast day when I shot most of the roll. My last roll was Portra 800 and I was definitely taken back by the Grain on that stock compared to Portra 400.
Great video but I was hoping you'd pop a roll of 160 into the m35 LOL.
Thanks! The M35 is a very light hungry camera and does better with 200-400 speed films. 800 for indoors with a flash : )
Yes Portra 160 is a good film. Portra 1600 is even better. Congrats are your son learning how to ride a bike. Starbucks is horrible coffee.
But any coffee is made better with marshmallows in it, right? I need to shoot more Portra 160. The only times I've used it was in 120 format (respooled by FPP to 620 for use in Brownie cameras), but I liked the results from it.
@@photography_jsk Just get a pair of nail clippers and trim the edges of 120 films plastic spool. Fits in your brownie camera. I do that all the time for my brownie bullseye.
Portra 160 is fantastic. It’s just not as warm as the others but has amazing color and latitude and the grain is gorgeous! It’s important that the lab takes its time correcting during scanning to get the most out of it.
I love portra 160. Have taken quite a few shots with that.
Portra 160? That’s the much less sensitive version of Portra 1600 right?
😅 I believe so…..
Late to the game, but Kodak E100, Portra 400, Bergger Pancro 400, and then whatever Harmon decides to come out with next (please be 1600 speed color)
Thank you all for everything you do.
