Pure Data programming fundamentals Volume 2 - Patch 2.1.5b DEMO
#glitch #modularsynth #coding #nerd #nerdy
Just another way to glitch a drum loop! There are several ways to achieve glitch sounds
starting from a loop, this is just one out of many. In this case we are using the phase inlet
of the [phasor~] object.

Love these scrungly computer noises
me too! :D glitches are great!
Yep, this should definitely go in the book!
thanks a lot! I'll do it then, maybe with a bit more control optios over the slicing-glitching mechanism
@@Muselectron cheers, may be good to add a metro too so it can sync to tempo? I don't have a lot of spare time at the moment, but planning to learn Pd properly this year!
yes, it is a good idea! There is actually already a metro in the patch, but it's wired in a way that creates the random speed and starting point of the slices, but adding another one (or an option) to be able to sync it with something else is a good idea for sure!
yes lease add it to the book love these noises!
thanks! I'll make another demo with different loops in the array, just to hear what it sounds like with different samples! :D
More playtime ..... love it man!!
thanks a lot man! I'm trying to have a lot of fun writing this book. I don't want it to be a sterile list of things that can be done, I'd like it to be a tool for creative exploration of the arrays' potentiality
I'm gonna have lots of fun with this one!
yes this is really a good one!
Love this!!!
Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate your support! <3
Can't wait for the book to join the other on my shelf :)
Thanks a lot for your support and appreciation! I'm also looking forward to get this new book finished, it has become a longer project than I expected, but I'm having lot of fun!
I'm following your tutorials on arrays in pure data. I don't seem to have all the objects you have. For example, I don't have the counter object. I'm using PD version 0.55.2 for Mac OS 10.15.7
you need to install some external libraries, in this case you need the "cyclone" library. Go to Help -> Find externals and typ e "cyclone" in the search bar. Install the library and then close and reopen Pd. If it doesn't work let me know ;)
Su purrData invece dovrebbe funzionarti senza problemi "out of the box".
Enjoying the book I wish the parts 2 and 3 were already written.
me too! :D jokes apart, I'm working on them, but since Max 9 recently came out I want to write the new books using the latest version, so there are still a few months to wait...
🤣 😁 thank you. Perhaps ill get your pd book. While I wait.
you will enjoy Pure Data quite a lot, but be aware that it's much more "spartan" than Max, more streamlined so to speak. I prefer Pd for my creative things because its way of managing arrays is brilliant. The second book for Pd will in fact be all about arrays and the endless possibilities they offer!
Thanks for doing this demo, I recently bought a Kawai SX-240. I love it to bits.
my pleasure! It's a great machine and it sounds beautifully!
Do you have any sound samples?
Not yet, I wanted to make a review of it but couldn't find the time so far. Next weekend I'll make the video
@@Muselectron ok, subscribed and waiting:)
thanks a lot for sub!
Is it sounds good?
Is it sounds good?
Just purchased.
Thanks! I hope it'll be helpful and fun! :)
Cool patch. Thank you!
Happy to be of help! :)
Grazie per il tutorial! Ho giusto cominciato a guardarmi Reaktor.
Tnx alot bro🎉
My pleasure! :)
Hey man, thanks for this. Keep going, please, and share your experiences about GP-10.🎉
Thanks, sure will do asap!
footsteps, liquid, and other things. I like it!
Thanks! ^.^
sounds very cool but the "breath" part is a too stiff imo
Thanks a lot for your feedback! This kind of criticism is important because it let's you see things you didn't see yourself when playing or practicing and it's a great way to spot the thing you have to improve!
Any chances of buying this book as PDF? I'm really into PD.
You can get the eBook Kindle version directly on Amazon. If you're in the USA, this is the direct link: www.amazon.com/Pure-Data-programming-fundamentals-synthesis-ebook/dp/B0C3FF4R4W/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Make sure to check the list of compatible devices before buying! Also, this is a Print replica format, hence some feautres might not be available on you eReader.
@@Muselectron Oh ! That's fantastic! I had no idea what was a Kindle before. Thank you so much for replying!
No problem! :) As I said, be sure to check the compatibility with your device before buying! If you don't have any compatible device, you can use the Kindle app, which is free :)
Dope
Thanks a lot!
Mhh, mhh 👌
Thanks a lot! :D
Use makenote into noteout because it also send note offs Noteout only sneds note off's when a velocity of 0 is send .which is not shown in this tutorial
I only started with Pure Data yesterday but I followed your perfectly explained patch and I have got a patch sending notes to my Behringer 2600 and I am so pleased as a complete newbie to PD. I now want to randomise the notes being sent and eventually get to create some generative "music" with the 2600. It will be a steep hill for me to climb and would be eternally grateful for any pointers you could give me on my next exploratory steps with this great software. Thank you so much for your videos !! Cheers Phil
I'm really happy my tutorials are of help! To generate random notes you can have a look at the [random] object and its Help file. Eventually, I'll make a tutorial about generating random notes sequences, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to do it. In the meantime, you can search on YT for other tutorials, there are many great people making great tutorials about Pd!
@@Muselectron Good Morning… very many thanks for taking the troubler to reply. I have just ordered a copy of your book which looks though it may be just what I need to go along with your expert videos. Thanks again… have a great day. ATB Phil
No problem! Thanks to you for purchasing my book, I hope you'll find it useful and interesting. It has been created for total beginners with no prior experience in Pure Data or programming in general and it has very pragmatic approach. Let me know if you like it and find it useful! :)
@@Muselectron Thanks.. will do 😎
Awesome ❤
Thanks a lot! ^.^
Do this book teach how to model gear as well?
although there are some chapters on how to make delays and other modulation effect (chorus, flanger and phaser), they are generic algorythms, not moldeled after specific gear or machine. There is a new series of objects that allows for the modeling of analog circuits in pd, but they are very recent and they are not coverd in this book
No i can't
it's from a very famous band that started in the 80s and is always been in the forefront of live performances with mega-screens and projections...
It's cool to see your progression from Day 1 to now!
Thanks! It's a great motivational process, you know the fact that I HAVE to make a video everyday with something new, it's really pushing me into practising and improving. It's also a lot of fun!
Do you have a PDF of the exercises?
No, but I'm really thinking of transcribing them into a PDF or something because I'm getting lost in them. Eventually, I'll let you guys know if I make a PDF or something out of these exercises.
That would be cool. I would definitely pay for something like that. Until then I have been using your videos to practice with so thanks!
My pleasure! I'll keep posting videos with exercises daily for 28 days more (until the challenge ends) and then I'll start working on some materials, collecting all the exercises, making charts and scores and more...
This is cool!
Thanks a lot! Enjoying myself some new exercises! :D
Thanks for this. I'm just starting to mess around with mine and I'm' lost.
my pleasure! I'm just getting started too, finding small exercises to do every day is really helpful. If you have some drum books, they can be useful, otherwise there are a lot of tutorials for beginners on TH-cam :)
What's your primary instrument? Also are you learning these for live performances? Cool stuff either way, I have an an arturia minilab and I might learn some finger drumming on its drum pads
I'm a drummer\classical percussionist - or I should say I was, since I don't play anymore. I actually didn't think of the goal, I was just curious to learn to do it and here I am. I think it's going to be useful for sure in my music production work, for my duo project called Improbability Machines. It's a lot of fun, especially because it's a middle ground between drumming and piano\keyboard playing, which for me it's both weird and fascinating at the same time. For the exercises, might be of interest that I'm mostly reusing exercises taken from drum books and from my drumming experience
Not bad
thanks a lot! Just a beginner sharing the struggle! :D It's a lot of fun
..can we see you open a tin of beans?
No :)
...two minutes I'll never get back.. ..why?
Nobody forced you to watch my videos :)
Appreciate you sharing your journey!
Thank you for being with me during my journey! I'm really trying to have fun and learn as much as I can. I thought that sharing my daily progress could have been useful to someone else and eventually someone with more skill and experience can get back to me with some feedback or suggestions on how to improve and also share some cool music
Worst machine for non quantized drumming
Why, what do you mean? is it because it doesn't have realtime quantization? I'm still exploring the functionalities of the machine, so I'm not yet familiar with quantization options
Pin me when this blows up Great job
Thanks a lot!
If I meet anyone randomly, and they finger drum or write rhymes, we're automatically friends. Thanks for the breakdown. I'm always trying to get better. Subscribed and liked.
hey nice to meet you and be "finger drummming pals"! :D And thanks a lot for subscribing! I'm trying to build my way up in finger drumming, just recently started and I'm having a lot of fun! Eventually, if you guys are interested, I can collect all the exercises and make a PDF or something...
People spout all kinds of trash on the web, with no thought of the impacts. It’s not a nice or constructive comment, but fair play to you, you took the feedback like a grownup. I’ve not read your books - I am going to purchase soon - but for what it is worth, your spoken English is imho excellent. Keep doing what you are doing, there are many who appreciate your work.
Thank you so much for your words, it means a lot to me! I always try to take negative comments and remarks in a consctructive way, it is the only way to imrpove myself and the quality of my work!
It would be so amazing to slice not by seconds, but by an incoming clock tempo. So you could toggle replay that is effectively clock-syncd
Technically, you can sync the slicing to whatever clock you want. It's another topic for a next tutorial, I definitely have to find the time to get back to making new tutorials for this series!
Mate, whatever you want to add to this would be appreciated. But even if you didn’t you’ve already helped me hugely. Thank you. It’s crazy to think Pd (plus a bit of hardware / soldering) might actually allow me to realise my mad musical dreams of weird module creation haha .. thank you
Another amazing video, I’m so glad I found this channel. I’m working my way through your content and learning a lot. Is it possible to check whether a file exists in the root folder? I.e. if you record/write data to a file (to save), it would ideally check does recording1.wav exist, and if so create a new file called recording2.wav? Sorry I hope that makes sense
Afaik it is not possible to check the content of a folder. However, you can make your own file counter and rename the files automatically after the object finishes a given recording. I can make a tutorial about it, but it will take me a bit since I'm working on the new books, but I'll try to make it eventually next week. And thanks for the acknowledgments, I'm really happy my content is being useful for your work! :D
Yep understood. I’d be interested to know the best way to update the file name, not a big deal (I saw you manually do it, I’ll follow that system), but from a general programming point of view, would you mix a string and a variable into a new string, and use that as the file name? “Wav” + %1 .. and would that be done on execution if a write? So a command ‘after’ the write that updates a number var, which is then used for subsequent file creations? No need to respond, I’ll await any new tutorials when they arrive. I’m just mega curious lol
So amazing .. thank you for sharing your knowledge. Could I ask, after opening the wav, could you adjust the speed of playback? A short sample could be stretched out (using a dial/knob) or sped up by the operator to suit the tempo. Having this in Modular hardware would be lovely imho
Hi, thanks a lot! You can not use the [readsf~] to change the speed and the pitch of the sound file. For that, you need to use arrays. Check Tutorial 17 and the follwing ones for the use of arrays: th-cam.com/video/xnroqAN9Sx4/w-d-xo.html
Understood, thanks man
Also, the person complaining spelt both the words poor and painful incorrectly. Maybe they should consider their own language skills 😉
yeah I noticed. He also mispelled "realy", with one L, but I didn't want to make that kind of videos where people complain or make fun of other's people mistakes, it would have been not "my thing"
Looks like it was purposeful, which is just unnecessary.
Hey, I bought your book and your English is excellent! I did notice a few sentences that maybe didn't sound quite right to a native English speaker, but it's question of writing style rather than errors. I'd be happy to go over it and suggest alternative phrasing that would sound more natural in English, but there was certainly nothing that detracted from the book's content, which was also excellent.
thanks a lot for the feedback! Yeah, not being native English speaker style is somehow a limit. But I'm watching lots of movies and TV series in English to imrpove, although living in an English Country would probably be the best thing. And of course I'd be grateful if you wanted to suggest more natural alternatives to my phrasing, it would be awesome! I'm always willing to learn and improve, so yeah feel free to go on with it! And of course thanks for the assesment on the quality of my content, I really try to do my best to help with the things I publish! Much appreciated
@@Muselectron I'll have to read it again when I get a chance. I still need to learn Pd anyway 😉
now that you guys reassured me about it, I'm much more relaxed. Therefore, there is no rush whatsoever, so feel free to take all the time you want. <3
nonono, your English is perfect!
thanks a lot! It really makes me feel relieved! :D
Ciao Maurizio!
@@Muselectron Ho appena provato e funziona perfettamente!!!
