Roland JC-40 vs JC-120 Amp Shoot Out
มุมมอง 111K8 ปีที่แล้ว
A simple A/B test between the two amps (sound recorded using a Tascam DR 40), in which Ravi "Marr" plays two sections of music from The Smiths.
This is incredibly cool. Thank you for posting this!
My setup is Ibanez GB10EE, JC40, 3 Proel footswitches for Chorus, Reverb, Distortion. I'm happy with the sound. The band consists of: my vocals and guitar, solo guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums.
I’m not a JC fan. Get a Roland Cube and you can see how far Solid State has come.
Une des meilleures comparaisons de ces deux amplificateurs.
Merci!
Hi buddy! Can I ask you a question? the chorus on the vintage jc (I have one too) is not adjustable, right? or only in mine can I adjust the vibrato and not the Chorus?
It's adjustable - depth and speed (same knobs)
@@ravimarr I found the manual of the old model. it is correct that only the vibrato can be modulated. the chorus is standard, it cannot be controlled.
💪 'promo sm'
How is the hiss on the JC120?
nice smiths song
Did you keep both amps or move on to something else?
super helpful. they both sound great. thanks for the video!
Thank you, Ravi! Some of the scenes from Metropolis (1927) came to my mind. I'm so glad that you shared with us!
can you play over a loud drummer with the jc40?
Yeah it's plenty loud enough in rehearsal.
The 40 is underrated
Are the 120 fx digital?
what is the second song you play?
Johnny Marr 💯
The bones of a promising track, pls develop further.
Well I was hard to tell the difference between the two, they both sound really really good plus that one is much smaller and lighter and go with that one
Definitely need to put the 40 on the ground to get more bass. I run mine with an EQ pedal to pull a little more lows and low mids. With a mic you can mix the 40 to sound bigger out front. I love my 40. I use the bright switch...then dump the treble to compensate and it gets a jangle much like a blackface fender. Great vid.
Hey man do you know where your 120 was made?
Can u demo it with a mullty effect board with distortion
Hey Ravi! Incredible demo of the amps. I picked up a JC-40 based on your eval.I wish it was that easy to pick some Smiths skills, too. Also, I'm intrigued by your guitar. Is it a Sheraton with a Bigsby?
It is! I upgraded all the parts-- tuners, pickups, added bigsby.... I'm glad you picked up a '40! Hope you have fun with it!
40 off the floor robs bass for sure. I’m robs bass and I came to get down.
Nice one mate, both sound great.
Had a 120 with a road case and it was too much to move around. Not exactly the same sound but close enough
The guitar amp prefered into 80s new wvave scene!
I was looking for a JC40 review and got a Johnny Marr sound lesson also. Well done!
Reissue repackage repackage!
The thing is, most JCs will sound great when used clean... Dramatic differences will appear when using dirt pedals in front of them. For instance the JC60 takes any pedal really well, when it's much harder to find the right pedals for a JC50...
Great amps, nice playing. Love The Smiths. I have a JC-40.
The Smiths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤘🏻🤙🏻💯
At the record company meeting
does anyone know if you can run stereo pedals into the 120 like you can with the 40? i have the 40 and i used my stereo pedals all the time with it (since there’s a R & L input for stereo) can i do this with the 120??
You could by plugging left and right of your stereo out, each going into one of the 120's two channels, but only one of it's channels has the chorus and reverb on tap.
Thanks for the video I was curious are you still using the 40 over the 120 for Live Events
Yes! I recently sold my 120 to a friend. I still use the 120 at fly away dates for backline and the transition is pretty smooth with my sounds, I just roll off a little low end on it.
that's my uncle there.
Lol
Thank ur uncle for me
stops yapping around 1;40
Nice comparison, thank you - any thoughts in retrospect? Cheers :)
Haven't looked back. Finally sold the 120 about six months ago. Have played some flyaway gigs with the 120 as backline and it's been a smooth transition. I'll always miss the low end on the 120 but not the load-out.
@@ravimarr I hear you re. the load-out - back says thank you... Some have commented on the noise-floor, do you find the hiss to be an issue? Cheers :)
@@pedalscapes Haven't had an issue with noise. Mine is super clean.
@@ravimarr that's good to know, cheers, I will try one of these when I get a chance...
@@pedalscapes The big thing for me has been the stereo input. I run stereo chorus and delays in and FOH mic's each speaker and hard pans. Fills the room.
Anybody with an ear for to can compensate for the resonance difference due to the the speaker and cabinet volume. All others...three words for you!...STFU!
prefer the jc120, sounds a bit fatter, and its too heavy. jc40 is much lighter and 'newer'. price for 120 isnt that expensive but i gotta think about how much i can carry
Came for the amp comparison, stayed for the Smiths riffs
my pleasure!
Thank you Ravi! I’m in the market for a jazz chorus, but not sure if I want the 120 or the 40. Your demo was super helpful as I also play a lot of smiths and cure type tones
Cool! Can't go wrong with either. Unless you have a bad back. Then you can DEF go wrong with the 120. I have stories...
Can't go wrong with either one. Your back will appreciate the 40.
1:48 2:22
Thanks for the great demo. I just picked up a JC 22 and am trying to dial in a similar sound. Any idea what you had the chorus speed & depth set at for these tunes?
probably like 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock
Named off every comparison I noticed, that was cool, attention to detail can make a difference. The 40 sounds really good for its size, but the 120 sounds alot broader. Good video.
Thanks for this, both are on my radar and still are.
If I got a JC120, would it hold up well at apartment volumes? Or would it just be pointless because that'd be too loud?
The JC 120 still sounds great at a low volume. But it's way more amp than you need for that situation.
The 40 is the apartment or home studio amp
I have HEARD the 120 is god awful loud, which isn’t necessarily terrible... but if you live in close proximity to other people-it can be less than ideal. Does anyone have any input? I heard you can’t even put the 120’s volume knob passed 1 or 2. I’m coming here as a fender hot rod owner who sick of the hot rod, so I just really want a clean amp, but I’d definitely be concerned if the JC 120 is THAT loud
It's really loud. It sounds amazing in a room with a band and it'd be ideal if you play a lot of gigs where the sound set up is minimal and FOH engineer isn't mic'ing you. But the 40 is also plenty loud. I mean I wouldn't be worried, you do have a volume pot :) and it sounds good low.
Ravi Krishnaswami thank you I appreciate your input very much!
