A wedding photographer and educator from the UK.
I've been photographing weddings for the last decade, shooting all over Europe, from here in the UK to Italy, France, Spain, Denmark, and even internationally. I'm also hugely passionate about helping other photographers build better businesses by improving their work, identifying their style and approach, or by helping them navigate the world of branding or marketing.
On this channel you'll find a mix of wedding photography advice and help, from the kit and gear I use, through to behind the scenes content of running a studio, and I'll be sharing the experiences and insights I've had from 10 years of business as a wedding photographer.

Came for the technique education, stayed for the R6 (cause that’s my model), subscribed for your personality and sense of humor 😅 happy 2025!
Great video Sam. Doing an event this weekend and will practice this beforehand!
I have been using this method for a long time, but always with my flash in TTL mode and the flash pointing upwards with a MagMod MagSphere attached. Works perfectly and solves the issue with adjusting the flash power manually all the time :)
@owleyephotography
Great vid!! What focus mode to you recommend to execute these shots? Spot wide tracking?? Once again kudos on this video! Stellar job all around!
Great video!
You can also do the recompose shot to off-centre by pressing the half-shutter? I don't get it how using the back button to focus gives more control and speed.
Amazing thanks so much for this
Mui buena informacion- thanks Sam, grea video
My pleasure!!
wow. Thank you Sam! I did try this before, a long time ago, from a TH-cam tutorial that I watched. then I tried it again and after coming home, i watched your video and it realized that there were a couple of things missing pointers from the old video that I watched and just realized it today after watching your video. thank you a lot!
Loved reading this!!! ✌🏼
Damn not bothering with the zoom function is where ive gone wrong all these times...
Yep, that's a key part, especially if there's a bit of ambient light! Glad it's helped. ✌🏼
Finally someone that has some sense!! Rear curtain sync only works for something that you're totally in control, like someone dancing and the drag is part of the dancing steps to finally the subject land in a specific position that the flash will fire and freeze. Doesn't work for these wedding situations, as you mentioned, you want to capture immediately what's happening, 1s later may be too late.
Amen!!! Loved reading this, thanks pal!!
Amazing results!
Love hearing this!!
That photo at 8:04 is crazy! Great tutorial, thank you.
My pleasure, glad it's helped!! ✌🏼
Great video Sam. I took away two big lessons from this (1) Smile; (2) Don’t dwell on bad shots. Now I’m looking back on some weddings I’ve done over the last few years, and I’m kicking myself for the times I took a bad shot and then wasted time thinking about it. And the times I got tired or down about something on the day, and lost my smile.
Ahh thanks mate, yeah we've all been guilty of it, we just need a quick reset sometimes!
do you focus on someones face when you take the photo in back button focus?
I try to! But if you're shooting at f8 on a 24mm, you've got a lot of depth to play with before someone is in or out of focus.
@@SamDocker Thanks for the reply ! So when you’re shooting up high and just shaking the camera are you essentially just letting the camera focus anywhere in that frame ?
Amazing video thank you so much!! What is rear curtain sync?? Could you explain a bit more?
Thanks! Rear curtain sync is when the flash fires at the end of the shutter, so if it's open for a fraction of a second, it fires at the end of that time, rather than the start of it. You want it to fire at the start, that way you capture the moment quicker. Hope that helps!
@@SamDocker thank you! Sorry but how do you get it to fire at the start? Is that just changing the camera settings?
@@erikamoore2460 Depends which camera you're on?! But most default would be to fire at the start, some people advise you to change it to rear curtain, but I don't agree with that.
Perfect Sam. ive got a gig today shooting a massive silent disco in a dark venue. this has been very bloody informative. thanks man. means a lot. Subscribed.
Thanks mate, hope the shoot went well and this helped!!!
What to do if dancing floor has to much light? can I use ND filter?
Potentially, I've never tried it with an ND, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. You can only give it a try, right?!
Yapper
very helpful and nice pics!
Love this. Have watched so many videos on this topic and this has been the first that’s has made it so clear and simple. Thanks Sam
You are so welcome!
man you are just a perfect teacher and an amazing artist thank you
❤
Can any dslr be used for shutter dragging? e.g. canon 5d mark iii
@@LanxFilmProductions yes, any DSLR can be setup for shutter drag!
this is a gem, thx!
Thanks!!
glad you mentioned it has to be dark ambient... this is critical. Any ambient light in the shot and the subject it just going to come out blurry
Thank you so much for posting this with such detail!!
Absolute pleasure, glad it helped!
Está bien . Lo de la cortina trasera yo también vi que mejor no cambiar
If you're finding you can't focus in the dark, some speed lights come with a front facing led light, switch that on.
oh man iforgot about that. I don't do flash often but that's a huge help. thanks.
i should start to call it frame instead of image. sounds a lot fancier.
great explanations, thank you!! is f8 a must or does it also work wide open f1.4 for example?
So helpful! Can't wait to try this tomorrow 😄 Thank you!
Hi Sam, just wanted to let you know how brilliant these videos are! Thank you so much for your ethos, style, and positive community-over-competition attitude! I was up late binge watching and know I will be rewatching for al these great tips.Thank You! Looking forward to seeing more from you!
Great video Sam, I have been a photographer for 30 years and you have some great information in this video!
Good post! Question: so.. 🤔 do we have to move the camera...? I don't think that was stated in the lists of main points... Ok thanks! cheers!
Yes, take shot, flash fires at start of frame, move/wiggle camera, and if the lights are static, they'll be blurry!!
This was good. Thank you!
Great video
Thanks!!
I like watching your videos. They are informative and it’s like just listening to a mate sharing useful tips. Thanks for the effort
Thanks mate, really appreciate that.
Does it matter if IBIS or Image Stabilization is on or off? Thank you.
Nope, shouldn't make any difference.
@@SamDocker Thanks Sam!
Great information, thank you!
Absolute pleasure!
Amazing explanation !! Gonna practice this week at a ferstival! But There is something I didn't get it correctly I think. Should we set up the sync flash in rear or front mode ?
Always on front, you want the flash to fire first, that way you capture the moment first, rather than having to wait for the rear!
my question is how do you get the person in frame when you're waving the camera around all over the place?
You aim the camera in the direction of the subject, stand close but on a wide lens, and then when you fire the shutter, then you move it slightly!! It works!!!
Glad to be a new subbie ❤
Have you ever tried the modeling light on the V1 instead of a light panel?
I had issues at the airport with.1 Cam + 2 lenses because it was to heavy. Whats the weight of all yours together? But great, that you cheat here ;)
Love, love, love this video, thank you
Thank you so much that was very informative and helpful!
So these are all very helpful. We're doing our first destination wedding in Italy in 2025, and want to know how is best to legally shoot a wedding there. There are 2 of us, so would be double the kit, and I'm not sure I like the we're just on holiday line. Is the a working holiday visa or something? We're from the UK
most comprehensive and helpful video I've seen on this technique! thank you
Thank so much!!
