Impact of Consolidation on Health Care
Four top experts in the field of hospital management and anti-trust issues gathered in a virtual seminar at the University of Pennsylvania's Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) to discuss the benefits and disadvantages of hospital mergers and consolidations. Included were a current and former official from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that has recently ramped up its efforts to slow the pace of anti-competitive health care consolidation that, over the last 30 years, has consistently raised health care delivery prices and costs. Corporatization of Independent Hospitals
มุมมอง 107หลายเดือนก่อน
A study team led by University of Pennsylvania researcher Atul Gupta, PhD, has found that there are significant differences in what happens after a multi-hospital system acquires an independent hospital versus when it acquires a hospital from another multi-hospital system. For instance, while prices go up in both cases, operation costs go down only in one and readmissions go up in only one. The...
High Cost of Gene Therapies
มุมมอง 92หลายเดือนก่อน
A panel convened by the University of Pennsylvania discusses the new cell and gene therapies that can now cost millions of dollars for a single treatment and, despite their often miraculous curative powers, are accessible to so few patients. A number of barriers prevent the lowering of prices as both commercial and government insurers and self-insured employers struggle to come up with sustaina...

All Organisms are genetic predictions as they are designed to fit their environment -- Richard Dawkins. Good design = survival of the fittest. Bad design = non survival. Making predictions is a syntropic process -- teleological. All organisms have the goal or target of surviving -- a syntropic process, teleological. Syntropy (prediction) is dual to increasing entropy -- the 4th law of thermodynamics! Teleological physics (syntropy) is dual to non teleological physics (entropy). Synergy is dual to energy -- energy is dual. All living things are made from energy hence life itself is dual! "Always two there are" -- Yoda.

I find some of this is exaggerated. We don’t have an epidemic of high blood pressure. Most doctors take blood pressure wrong. We have an epidemic of badly taken blood pressure. We have noisy, crowded waiting rooms with televisions playing Fox News, especially at Penn. Of course blood pressure is high. He should push for better measurement systems. Also some of these diseases have a hereditary component. He says elsewhere that we focus on prolonging life, even a miserable life. That is more correct.

Then let's ask sellout doctor "have you seen uninsured poor not being treated decently with private equity takeovers of ers/hospitals?" He says "no, there's no evidence of this happening". Oh OK she says but should've been "what would you consider evidence if it were present?" Or has there been data collected on this" If he were the kind of doctor I wanted in charge of my life or death health care he would have been honest and said "I don't believe so but thereve not been real data collected on this" very disturbing to me

Private equity is toxic for healthcare and kills people. Steward health run by Cerberus capital has pillaged almost a billion $ from Massachusetts and is now closing hospitals across the state, this will have devastating long and short term impacts on thousands of jobs, and access to care for patients. The company made hundreds of millions and the commonwealth of Massachusetts go screwed, if this isn’t a perfect reason why private equity shouldn’t be in health care idk what is.

When it comes to ethics, the distribution and use of these funds raise several ethical questions. Some people believe that the funds should be used primarily for treatment and prevention programs for opioid addiction, while others argue that they should be used to compensate individuals and families who have suffered losses due to the epidemic. Another ethical issue is the question of accountability. Some people argue that the pharmaceutical companies should be responsible for the epidemic and held accountable for their actions and should be required to pay significant amounts of money to help address the problems. Others argue that the companies should not be held responsible. Overall, the use of opioid settlement funds is a complex issue that raises many ethical questions. An important point to remember is that doctors should be informing these patients of the indications, side effects and implications with these pharmaceuticals. It is up to policymakers, healthcare professionals and communities to work together to ensure that the funds are used in ways that help those affected.

Breast cancer screenings are important as they help detect breast cancer at an early stage when it is more treatable. Early detection increases the chances of survival and reduces the need for more invasive treatment. The ethics behind breast cancer screening involves that individuals are informed about the potential risks and benefits of screening. Patients should be given the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether or not to undergo screening. It is also important to ensure that the screening is accessible to all individuals, regardless of their SES or other factors. Additionally, patient privacy and confidentiality should be maintained throughout the screening process. Finally, it is important to ensure that the screening is conducted in an accurate and reliable manner, with appropriate quality control measures put in place.
