Mario Battaini channels Nick Battista
Here’s a music video that celebrates my dad’s career. When I hear Mario Battaini play his accordion, his style and skill reminds me so much of my dad, Nick Battista. The images show his deep passion for his craft. He was born into it. Grandpa Pasquale Battista also played. My dad was playing professionally as a teenager during the Depression. He just kept going and became very popular, especially after returning from WWII when he became music director at CKVL radio station in Verdun, where he headed such programs as Jouez Double, Tour de Valse, Swing la Baquaise, Chansoniers Canadiens and many more featuring famous French stars like, Charles Trenet, Luis Mariano, Tino Rossi, and great Canadians like Felix Leclerc, Raymond Levesque and so many more. For this story, I chose the tangos because those were dad’s favorites when working in Montreal night clubs. I had the good fortune of playing bass with his trio toward the end of his career.

Por Una Cabeza 3

Por una Cabeza is another wonderful tango created by Carlos Gardel. It was featured in the 1992 film Scent of a Woman, staring Al Pacino. It is performed, here in his studio, by legendary Montreal accordionist Gino Sauro.
The Last Parade for Victory

The Last Parade for Victory was written by Canadian Private Nick Battista, while entertaining the troops during WWII, in 1943, as an accordionist with the Forage caps unit. Resurrected from Battista's archives, this wonderful march is performed for us, for the first time since the end of the war by legendary Montreal accordionist Gino Sauro.
